Spoiler, that’s just an opinion.

Why don’t you just use key commands?

Linux isn’t really usable for most people

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Not yet. But it’s not moving away from it. It needs a few huge global companies to migrate over. Their demand for enterprise software will drive large software developers over.

I hate putting it like this, but when Adobe finally releases photoshop, it’s all over for windows, and Linux will skyrocket.

Can you imagine running any server on windows? lol

Well written articles are so much sexier than videos.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I'm working on a some materials for a class wherein I'll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we're including a section we're calling "foot guns". Basically it's ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

I believe refactoring never ends. Just because it works, doesn’t mean it can’t work better. The better it works, the easier it will be to add features… that can be refactored too.

Anyone got a list instead of a video?

I frequently ask ChatGPT to make whole functions for me. It’s important to check the code and test it, obviously, but it has saved me quite a bit of time.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

It certainly has its limitations. I’ve noticed a few topics where it generally gets things wrong, or I can’t seem to explain it properly. In that case, you may just use it as a reference guide. Maybe toss it some code and ask it what it thinks. It’s not always useful information, but sometimes that leads you down a different road that you would not have thought of before.

First draft grammar of Xeph, a non-pure functional language, a superset of ASDL. Input is needed. (+ guide on reading EBNF) ( gist.github.com )

Please tell me what you honestly think of it --- this is not a 'labor of love' exactly, I only spent a few hours on it. But I think its a strong foundation for what comes next. The implementation, I hope, will be an orgy of love!...

If you’re using web stuff, just use a framework. Whatever has the easiest to use components for your workflow. As long as your app doesn’t look like total ass, people will forgive an uninspired design in favor of functionality.

But… I have all these tools, and no imagination!

25 minutes is way too long. Could be under 5. Basically it’s glitchy as hell and someone else will do it better. Also costs a ton and has a required subscription.

I love ChatGPT. It’s an invaluable tool. It has helped me solve my problems by pointing me in the right direction significantly faster than any search engine.

KDE Plasma 6, and their distro KDE Neon, are both really good.

There are many very friendly Linux communities on Lemmy who can help you get set up.

As long as it has a USB-A port, I think it will be good. We can’t seem to kill that one. ;)

I think that’s when the Internet started going to shit. When people started using it for shameless self-promotion. I miss MySpace, and GeoCities.

we’ve replaced our $10k/month Aurora instances with a $200/month Elastic Block Storage (EBS) volume.

Lol, i’m sure just refactoring it and using a different service could have lowered that price significantly.

Cool

Rectangle for Linux?

To preface this, I've used Linux from the CLI for the better part of 15 years. I'm a software engineer and my personal projects are almost always something that runs in a Linux VM or a Docker container somewhere, but I've always used a Mac to work on personal and professional projects. I have a Windows desktop that I use...

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

At least you’re not forced to use windows

Google Podcasts is gone — and so is my faith in Google ( www.theverge.com )

The Podcasts app is just the latest product to go through a process I’ve come to call The Google Cycle. It always goes the same way: the company launches a new service with grandiose language about how this fits its mission of organizing and making accessible the world’s information, quickly updates it with a couple of neat...

Tried Arch for the first time | My experience and impressions ( lemmy.ml )

I used linux intermittently in the last 15 or so years, migrating from early Ubuntu versions, to Manjaro, Pop!_OS, Debian, etc. And decided to give Arch a try just recently; with all the memes around its high entry point, I was really expecting to struggle for a long time to set it up just as I want....

Obsidian does this better. But I’m happy to have more options.

Anyone got a link for this topic that isn’t a video?

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Nope.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Well, it’s not just a single synology, it’s got a bunch of expansion units, and there are multiple host machines.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

It’s an investment. It’s like the price of a small car. But it was built over time, so not like one lump sum.

Originally, it was to have easier access to my already insane Blu-ray collection. But I started getting discs from Redbox, rental stores, libraries, etc. they are full rip, not that compressed PB stuff. Now there are like 3000 movies and fuck knows how many tv shows.

A lot of my effort was to have the best release available. Or, have things that got canceled. Like the Simpsons episode with MJ, which is unavailable to stream.

Snags… well, synology is sooo easy. Once you figure out how you want you drives set up, there’s nothing to it.

Whatever you do, always have redundant drives. Yes, you lose space, but eventually one of them is gonna die and you don’t want to lose data.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Right now most of them are 20T each. I started smaller at first, but they’ve dropped so much in price. I usually wait until a sale and grab a bunch. There are… math… 62 drives?

When I first started, I only had the 6 bay… I chose synology because I wanted something that was managed for me. I don’t want to have to focus on setting things up and possibly doing things wrong. It comes with amazing tools. Also, the server buy-in was a lot less than the other “professional” rack mounted solutions.

I had such a great experience that I just kept with them. It is a pretty expensive hobby though, but so is buying physical movies. And, some things never get a physical release, so having it digitally protects me from when Netflix, or whomever, decides to drop something.
