I like the fact that my Android phone records my location timeline from Google Maps, but the fact that this is stored in Google servers creeps me out....
Ubuntu was my first distro because ubuntu was linux for outsiders many years ago. Any other distro was only for hardcore people. I don't regret hopping around the linux world.
I've been recently looking into watching my weight and diet again. I had used Noom in the past and really liked their services, but then it came out that they were essentially wiretapping everyone. It seems like every health focused app is selling health information now....
Why is it not stated which research paper? By whom? It's just a reproduction of what they do which is good but the guy reporting about it acts like it's breaking news.
I don't mean for this to become a KDE vs GNOME post. I'm looking at switching to Fedora (because Arch is a pain), and it seems that GNOME is more supported. I use KDE on Arch. What features would I be losing if I were to switch? (ex: toolbar management, KRunner, etc.)
Ubuntu has too many problems for me to want to run it. However, it has occurred to me that there aren't a lot of distros that are like the Ubuntu LTS....
Fedora introduced a whole new distro where you can't install anything with dnf anymore and people love it. People love using flatpaks instead (yes I know of all the shortcomings, but you can always choose another install method for that broken package). And ubuntu users just hate ubuntu for what they do. The difference may also be that fedora gives a choice to the user and does not directly force it
You could do that. With that image everything is vompletely equal on the user device which means that debugging is much easier. Ublue makes distributing custom fedoras increadibly easy.
I use nextcloud cookbook but I would really love another or a federated alternative. It does its job but I don't think other people I know would use it.

You should do a better job updating your documentation so that people do not waste their time like I did. This change to closed source was announced where, exactly? All of your READMEs and documentation sites do not mention this. Very easy to be confused and very disappointing to me that this went closed-source.
Not only did you sell out, you also removed all the old versions that were released under an open source license so that others couldn't continue to use out-of-support versions. DISGUSTING.
tl;dr get off GitHub and npm entirely if you want to do the closed-source thing, kthx.
Sorry for this and others. That's a horrible experience.
GNOME looks better out of the box and configuring KDE can be very tricky. There are also a lot of outdated "addons" for KDE and you need some in order to get what you want. extensions are better integrsted in KDE but it's not like KDE has everything out of the box.
I'd love to see more KDE support.
I understand your reasoning. And I understand it for old projects, matrix wasn't an option 5 or 10 years ago. Almost all modern public projects are on matrix nowadays. Someone said it already, there are also bridges and matrix doesn't excludr anyone.
Cool! You don't need a server specifically for that, a room is enough. Just create an account on a reliable server and create the room. Most big rooms are on matrix.org in my experience, unless it's some of the big projects from mozilla, gnome or kde but even openstreetmap are on matrix.org
I'm looking into hosting one of these for the first time. From my limited research, XMPP seems to win in every way, which makes me think I must be missing something. Matrix is almost always mentioned as the de-facto standard, but I rarely saw arguments why it is better than XMPP?...
Xmpp is old and has no traction. Matrix is new and there are many people believing in it. There is a lot of money put on matrix. A lot of people want matrix to succeed. Especially companies, agencies and governments love matrix. Jumping on a train that already moves forward is easier than trying to push a standing train.
With xmpp, or signal I've got all my messages on my device. Distributing the info to other devices is difficult. With matrix everything sits on the server and distributes the info to the clients. That's like my file cloud, or my photo cloud or my music server, or my document server. Everything is saved centrally on a server and all is independent of the consumer device. I can use multiple devices and everything sits on the server. That's great for me as a user, it's easy.
Xmpp is scattered which is great on one hand but matrix development is moving very fast. Xmpp can't compete with that.
What's the advantage of xmpp over signal for the end user?
