A Sneak Peek at new linux distro Zorin OS 17

https://blog.zorin.com/2023/12/04/a-sneak-peek-at-zorin-os-17/

@linux

Made with shamrocks.

I use linux for the same reason I wear fuzzy socks and sweaters

My understanding of the history of fashion is that back in the 1950s America it was expected that you wore a suit/dress at work unless you had a different uniform. There were a bunch of very boring people who thought that we should be wearing office job garb all the time, because they wore suits so much it was their default...

Republicans: Noooooo!!!

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

It’s not political. It’s political in reference to conservatives who cry about things they don’t understand and make it so the rest of us can’t enjoy those things.

I’ll believe any name you say is a real distro at this point.

Near-Future file type concept "Digital Memory" ( lemmy.world )

This is an idea I’ve been toying with for a bit. There is a ton of media that includes unimportant information that doesn’t need to be stored pixel perfect. Storing large portions of the image data as text will save substantial amounts of storage, and as the reality of on-device image generation becoming commonplace sets in...

So I take a photo of a friend and then the ai changes them and it’s no longer them.

Actually sounds like a black mirror episode. So… congrats on that?

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

I mean… that’s gonna fuck with people’s memory. And what of the software that provides this service? What things will it decide aren’t important? A child playing in the background? A beautiful sunset that should be remembered as it was.

I think it’s an interesting idea, but the power it takes to make this happen every time you view the image and the wild inaccuracy that would inevitably happen would create significantly more problems than just improving image compression or investing time in increasing the capacity of existing storage devices.

Realistically, in the future we won’t have to worry at all about our disk space. It’s almost to that point already. My NAS is way more than I’ll ever use, and it was pretty cheap.

Biometric data is not useless. Perhaps yours alone is, but ALL of ours… combined with our location history, income level, job industry, shopping preferences, spending habits, etc, are worth quite a bit.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

At least that helps us eliminate the brainwashed. I like to bring up the hard stuff on the first date: religion, politics, abortion, gun control. Their sexual organs aren’t worth the feeling I’ll have when I find out they’re trash in the brain.

This prison is really getting in the way of my life.

How long does this last against a c4-strapped drone swarm?

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

The absolute last thing I’m going to do is use a Google product.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Forgot the /s

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

It’s not the only desktop OS that has sandboxing.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Google never should have opened it up for hardware manufacturers. They should have just made the OS and licensed it out like windows. Then hardware manufacturers wouldn’t be able to release crappy forks that never get updated.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

So, it would have failed… haha

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Hardware manufacturers on average do a shitty job keeping their fragmented operating systems up to date. My iPhone has gone through many major version updates. If hardware manufacturers don’t want to quickly, or ever, update they should have just shipped their phones with stock Android, and allowed us to update it to whatever is the latest.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

As long as you’re happy, I’m happy.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Sorry, I thought it would be obvious that hardware drivers would be provided by the hardware manufacturer, and then on a fresh install the OS would just… ya know… get them from the manufacturer. 😉

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Incorrect.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

lol. Google is still around?

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

At the rate they cancel things, they’ll be a whole new company

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

I don’t think so.

I’m not evil. Hey, can I see your contacts? It’s to find your friends… I’m not mapping who knows who and selling that data. I sweeeaaarrrr

Why Do Companies Not Use Existing 2FA Standards?

This is something I am seeing more and more of. As companies start to either offer or require 2FA for accounts, they don’t follow the common standards or even offer any sort of options. One thing that drives me nuts is when they don’t offer TOTP as an option. It seems like many companies either use text messages to send a...

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Support. Explaining what OTP is to my mother would be impossible. Getting her to download an app-even harder. Companies (like mine) have to develop for the lowest common denominator. Email, sms, voice call, snail mail. That’s all we have.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Again, support.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

If it’s hidden, then no one would use it and my development time is better spent on things that matter.

(I don’t actually disagree with you, I like TOTP personally)

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

As long as I can say “you’re on your own” to every one of those 100%

TLDR; rich kid forks Linux, loves his grandfathers red hat 🎩, meets another guy who distributes open source software, boom.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Do they want to lose access to… everything on the internet? Because this is how you lose access to everything.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

I keep forgetting that the UK left the European Union. When I originally read that title I was like how the fuck could that happen? Oh Brexit. That is going to set them back decades.

    I’m sorry, I was distracted by those thighs

    tsonfeir ,
    @tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

    Probably not. Ubuntu has predictable release schedules which helps when you’re a business.

    Wish it was degoogled. I’d love one, but… android 🤢 privacy hell

    Well yes. But I want a NEW phone

    tsonfeir ,

    @tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

    Is that ad and tracker blocker just browser level or are there… ads in the OS?!

    tsonfeir ,
    @tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

    Oh I gotcha.

    @tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

    So many forks when all I want is a spoon.

    tsonfeir ,

    Is this a joke about getting shot in the foot?

    tsonfeir ,
    @tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

    Isn’t using that logo a crime? Like… pretending to be a cop, or interfering in an investigation or something?

    tsonfeir ,

    Do you think she’ll be crying in the real one?
