I suspect it will replace Ubuntu as the new noob distro, which is a good thing. Doesn't run as fast on older hardware as mint w cinnamon, but that's not a big deal. I'm hoping the new DE will improve that.

Love how feature rich it is, especially love the switch to toggle tiling windows on the desktop.

Janus, a simple text editor

For the past few months I have been working on a simple windows notepad like text editor. It's nothing special, but when I first switched to linux I looked around and it took me a while to find leafpad. Unlike leafpad however, Janus uses gtk3, a much more modern toolkit then gtk2, it can display and modify binary data, and it...

Do you honestly encrypt your porn? Why? (Assuming it's legal)

I think we both understand the intention behind my statement

Open source e reader ( lemmy.ml )

I recently got a Sony prs 600 e reader from 2009. The battery is at the end of its life (It lasts about 3 days with heavy reading, and a couple weeks without reading). No backlight, no Wi-Fi, just an SD card that I can load epub files and small PDFs. The screen is slow and the contrast isn't the best. The "touch screen" is the...

There's already projects going for open source firmware for pre existing hardware, such as inkbox and KoReader

I'm also watching the open book project. I'm hoping that supporting it will enable things to progress to the point where it gets in the hands of schoolchildren in developing countries

z00s ,

Nelson Mandela learned Afrikaans.

If you're not learning everything you can about your opponent, how do you expect to beat them?

z00s ,

Orange man can't even write a complete sentence, lol.

z00s ,

I know, I am too 😅

It was more of a minor troll haha

z00s ,

Indeed, hopefully that will be added in the future

z00s ,

Finally some good news out of North Korea

z00s ,

It goes well with Lamb Kofta

z00s ,

On your own machine, sure. But I think OP was referring to government departments

z00s ,

According to...?

z00s ,

You held a national poll, including yourself?

z00s ,

Dude calm down. Nobody cares that much, and I'm sure you don't speak for every Greek person in the world.

z00s OP , (edited )

I was wondering how long it would take the gatekeepers to show up. The command works, and is perfectly fine. If I had any uncommon formats, I would tell gpt to include them.

z00s OP ,

Thanks for the tip!

z00s OP ,

Absolutely. And I would also add that the more critical the use case, the more work you should do to double check things. Don't rely on gpt alone if you're doing critical backups, for example. But if you just want a python program that sorts MP3s, then go ahead and give it a whirl.

z00s OP ,

You left out the part where it then gave you the correct answer.

z00s OP ,

In order to poison a LLM, you'd need access to the training process, which is locked down by openai. Just posting false info on the net isn't enough. GPT doesn't simply repeat what's already been written.

More than that though, you can find plenty of wrong and bad advice posted confidently by legions of Linux gatekeepers on any forum.

Anyone who has ever spent any time on stack overflow will tell you why they'd rather talk to an LLM instead of posting there.

z00s OP , (edited )

Then why are you here?

z00s OP ,

I'm guessing for you it's number 3.

The high rate of gatekeeping in the Linux community can be attributed to several factors:

  1. Expertise and Complexity: Linux, with its technical complexity and steep learning curve, can foster environments where expertise is highly valued. This can lead to some individuals using their knowledge as a form of power, controlling access to information and resources.

  2. Cultural Heritage: The origins of Linux in a niche, technically proficient community have perpetuated a culture that prizes deep knowledge and expertise, sometimes at the expense of inclusivity.

  3. Identity and Status: For some, their identity and status within the community are closely tied to their perceived expertise and control over certain aspects of the technology, which can lead to gatekeeping behaviors to protect their standing.

  4. Fear of Dilution: There's often a concern that broadening the community might dilute its values or lower its standards, prompting some members to gatekeep to maintain a perceived purity or quality.

Efforts to address these issues often involve community-led initiatives to foster a more welcoming and inclusive environment, alongside mentorship programs to help newcomers navigate the community more effectively.

z00s OP ,

Squeaky clean 😅

z00s OP ,

You'd be a number 4

z00s OP ,

You get what you give

z00s OP , (edited )

I am actually curious about that, would I need a high powered GPU? I'm running a refurbished Dell Optiplex with a very basic video card that I added

z00s OP ,

Perhaps, but I'm not really suggesting its use for professional programming in this post.

What it is good for is helping with simple stuff like terminal commands, learning python etc. Stuff that has a low risk profile that you're not relying on for anything too important.

z00s ,

That makes so much sense. That's probably the best explanation I've ever heard of why windows is so hard to get rid of in large organisations.

z00s , (edited )

From what I've heard, the problem with IT in the health industry is with equipment manufacturers. MRIs, x-ray machines and other equipment that have control software that's written not just for windows, but a particular version of windows, and won't work without it. So you end up with a patchwork of different OSes that need to be updated and secure. Unifying that into one OS, even if it was to a pre-rolled Linux distro would be a nightmare, if not impossible.

It breaks my brain every day of the week thinking about how much money could be put to better use in so many industries if they just switched to Linux, but big organisations are like big ships; they move slowly and are hard to steer. And they regard software licences as the cost of doing business 🤷‍♂️

Set him up with a whiteboard and feed him actual, real figures and watch him fail to explain how it would be possible to do what he’s claiming.

No financial gifts or inheritances from parents to use as a deposit, no magical income that comes from starting a business, no magical windfalls from putting house deposit savings into the stock market, just regular old income and student debt.

If he can’t do this, he should be ignored by the financial media.

Here’s a little graph I whipped up. Dave Ramsay was born in Nashville, in 1960. So he would have been a little too young to buy in 1975, but you get the general idea.

Personally this would be the exact reason that would stop me from signing up for a new messaging service.

Yes, your baby is special and amazing. To you.

z00s ,

All it took was one set of nerd eyeballs

z00s ,

This answer has a lot of wisdom. It would have helped me greatly at the beginning of my Linux journey if someone had explained the difference between a distro and a DE, and how they both work. Choosing a DE is probably more important than choosing a distro for most beginners imo

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone ( lemmy.world )

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

z00s ,

Definitely report this to the accc

z00s ,

Did you buy your phone from eBay or amazon? Could be a refurbished overseas model

z00s ,

Hm, weird

z00s ,

Yes, they really do. There's nothing that business types love more than smelling their own bad ideas and thinking it's genius.

You can be sure that a CEO on $10 million thinks regular people would think nothing of subscribing to ten different services because he does personally, so what's the big deal?

z00s ,

The thing about exploits is that they can exist without there being a wider knowledge of them; that's the nature of the beast. So I play it safe.

Plus, for 5 cents' worth of masking tape you've solved the problem, so why bother even thinking about it.
