The people who are smart enough to understand that corporations need restraint are also smart enough to know that burning a single building down will do nothing but give that company an insurance check. It needs to be the people who are in the c-suite, on the board, the consulting firms, etc. it has to happen overnight and with all of them.

self hosted

do not require users to open the Terminal at all

This is not possible. If you self host you have to maintain the server.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

So the CMS needs to handle server upgrades too? Security? Firewalls? The list goes on. That’s a lot to ask for any single piece of software, let alone free —and good.

I feel like there is a venn diagram for this already.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

cpanel can only do so much. You still have to set up a database. Sure, you could probably do it all with cpanel, but there’s still maintenance. I think what they need is NOT self hosted. Something serverless.

Ultimately, I think the solution needs to be a new Wordpress competitor that takes advantage of cloud technologies and can be moved around easily if you need to switch hosts. Something that has lots of integration options so you can just choose your own cdn, database host, app host, etc.

But even then, once you want to go outside the box and make something that doesn’t have a template, you’re gonna touch code, or a terminal.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

I agree, there are lots of options if you don’t need something robust. Especially if you’re willing to compromise on design.

tsonfeir ,

The same can be said about any binary as well.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Correct.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Yes, the binary downloaded from an open source project might be different from the binary compiled on your own computer, even if they are from the same source code. Here are a few reasons why this can happen:

  1. Compiler Differences: Different compilers or different versions of the same compiler can produce binaries with variations in performance and size.

  2. Build Environment: The environment in which the binary is compiled, including the operating system and its version, libraries, and other dependencies, can affect the outcome.

  3. Configuration Options: Most open source projects have various configuration options which can be enabled or disabled during the build process. The pre-compiled binaries might have a different set of configurations compared to what you choose when compiling it yourself.

  4. Optimization Levels: Compilers have different optimization levels and settings. The binary provided by the project may be optimized for general compatibility, while you might compile with optimizations specific to your hardware.

  5. Patches or Modifications: The official binary might include patches or modifications that are not present in the source code you downloaded, especially if it's from a different branch or a snapshot of the repository at a different time.

  6. Reproducible Builds: Some projects aim for reproducible builds, where the same source code should generate an identical binary, but this is a challenging goal and not all projects achieve it.

Always ensure that you trust the source of any pre-compiled binaries, as they could potentially include malicious code not present in the source.

It’s also a lot easier to do this on a desktop/server environment. Doing this on a popular mobile device would be difficult, and would require the OS developer be involved (and I doubt Google or Apple would be that open)

Wyden’s letter cited a “tip” as the source of the information about the surveillance. His staff did not elaborate on the tip

Not saying you’re wrong, but that’s not an issue with the OS, it’s an issue with how push notifications work and how companies deal with requests for data.

It’s not spyware…. It’s crap. Like SMS is crap.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Tracking and spyware are two different things.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

The terms “tracking” and “spyware” both refer to methods of monitoring and collecting information from users. However, they have different connotations and uses.

Tracking is usually used for collecting data about user behavior, preferences, and activities, primarily for marketing, analytics, or personalized content delivery through cookies, pixels, or scripts in websites and apps. Users are sometimes made aware of tracking and can often opt-out or limit the extent. It is generally a “legal practice,” (I say loosely) and is widely used by “legitimate businesses.”

Spyware, on the other hand, is designed to secretly monitor and collect information from user devices without consent. This can include sensitive data like passwords, financial information, personal conversations, physical location, penis size, just making sure you read this. It can be installed through deceptive means such as phishing, software bundling, or exploiting security vulnerabilities. The user is typically unaware of spyware being run on their devices. It is considered malicious and illegal, unless you are a multibillion-dollar company haha. It’s often associated with cybercrimes, unethical surveillance, and government fuckery.

So, while they are pretty similar and have some crossover, ultimately they are different. Although, some malicious tracking can be done without your device being compromised at all, like GPS triangulation.

But if the server side element is just cloud storage, you should be able to supply your own server.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

I mean, there are pretty standard protocols for most of the cloud services, like S3 API - the defacto.

Hell, sftp is fine for most stuff. They just want your data.

But the developer doesn’t need to provide support if you opt to use your own data storage and the storage itself fails. And

Google would be the one to contact if Google drive has an issue.

Is it possible to flash a new OS onto an old iPad 2?

I bought an old iPad2 for the purpose of viewing a Home Assistant dashboard via a web browser. My thinking was that the ability to browse the web was the sole requirement for a tablet for this purpose, but I was wrong: Home Assistant’s web pages apparently require a newer version of javascript than iOS 9.3.5 can handle, but...

Nope. You’re hosed. Can’t even put Linux on it. Great piece of hardware still, total trash.

tsonfeir ,
@tsonfeir@lemm.ee avatar

Nope. Won’t work. It did back in the day, but nothing will run on it anymore because the OS version required won’t install. I have an iPad 2, I’ve tried.

No doubt, the hardware could run Ubuntu Touch, alas Apple are dicks like that.

Are agile scrums an outdated idea?

Here's a video on YouTube making the case for why agile was an innovative methodology when it was first introduced 20 years ago.

However, he argues these days, daily scrums are a waste of time, and many organisations would be better off automating their reporting processes, giving teams more autonomy, and letting people get on with their work:

https://youtu.be/KJ5u_Kui1sU?si=M_VLET7v0wCP4gHq

A few of my thoughts.

First, it's worth noting that many organisations that claim to be "agile" aren't, and many that claim to use agile processes don't.

Just as a refresher, here's the key values and principles from the agile manifesto: http://agilemanifesto.org/

  1. Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
  2. Working software over comprehensive documentation
  3. Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  4. Responding to change over following a plan
  • Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software.
  • Welcome changing requirements, even late in development. Agile processes harness change for the customer's competitive advantage.
  • Deliver working software frequently, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, with a preference to the shorter timescale.
  • Business people and developers must work together daily throughout the project.
  • Build projects around motivated individuals. Give them the environment and support they need, and trust them to get the job done.
  • The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.
  • Working software is the primary measure of progress.
  • Agile processes promote sustainable development. The sponsors, developers, and users should be able to maintain a constant pace indefinitely.
  • Continuous attention to technical excellence and good design enhances agility.
  • Simplicity--the art of maximizing the amount of work not done--is essential.
  • The best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams.
  • At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly.

Your workplace isn't agile if your team is micromanaged from above; if you have a kanban board filled with planning, documentation, and reporting tasks; if your organisation is driven by processes and procedures; if you don't have autonomous cross-functional teams.

Yet in many "agile" organisations, I've noticed that the basic principles of agile are ignored, and what you have is micromanagement through scrums and kanban boards.

And especially outside software development teams, agile tends to just be a hollow buzzword. (I once met a manager at a conference who talked up how agile his business was, and didn't believe me when I said agile was originally a software development methodology — one he revealed he wasn't following the principles of.)
