Is there any solution available for controlling the volume without pressing the physical volume buttons ?

So I just bought a OnePlus 12 recently, I was used to controlling volume using the onehand operations goodlock module in my Samsung galaxy S23. I basically never had to press the volume buttons to control the volume unless absolutely necessary....

CAD Software Suggestion

I am currently on win10 but have been toying with mint and liking it. I intend on fully switching over soon. I have also been toying with the idea of some simple 3D modeling, like making custom parts for projects around my house. Maybe using a CAD software to generate stls for a 3D print or using it to spec out parts for a...

really rough to use honestly. I'd rather use non-FOSS (on shape) while I wait for this to hit the "blender inflection point" and actually get good.

I'd say PopOS, EndeavourOS (or just Arch), or just Fedora Linux 40 (might need to check a box to enable proprietary drivers on install for Nvidia to work right).

Nothing will run MS365 though, that's just not on Linux (and Wine doesn't work very well for modern versions). Best you can do is a Windows virtual machine if you need the actual applications and not the cloud version.

I've played 2077 and RDR2 on my PC (running arch Linux) with no problems. couple hundred hours between them. tbh I couldn't compare to windows, since I just haven't used windows in ~7 years

plus, it isn't like this isn't exactly like adding another "door" to the "systemd building". It's a modular component of systemd, so more akin to replacing the sudo building with a new, but still separate, systemd sudo building

yeah I use revanced + YT premium for sponsor block. Haven't experienced any issues yet though

[Feature Request] It would be really useful if we could set nicknames to WiFi ssids.

I, often, find myself wondering what all these WiFi's are on my phone and I think it would be useful to be able to set a nickname for a wifi network so to remember which one is which. For example "parents house" etc. What do you think?

@cole@lemdro.id avatar

android is actually open-source, so you could implement this yourself and make a pull request

you can get an ePLB (emergency personal locator beacon) which has no subscription since it is an international coalition for rescue. don't need to pay garmin or whatever for that b.s. and it uses special satellites to locate you so it's very reliable. This is what ships and planes use to signal distress as well.

Court blocks $1 billion copyright ruling that punished ISP for its users’ piracy ( arstechnica.com )

One thing that leaps out at me about this ruling is that courts understand the internet a lot better nowadays. A decade or so ago Sony would have probably gotten away with the argument that Cox profited from the users' piracy; nowadays judges themselves use the internet and are going to go "lolno, they probably would have been...

Basically, the lemmy backend service for some reason marked every instance we federated with as inactive, which caused it to stop outbound federation with basically everyone. I have a few working theories on why, but not fully sure yet.

TL;DR lemmy bug, required manual database intervention to fix

This was a stressful start to a vacation!

For a more detailed working theory…

I’ve been doing a lot of infrastructure upgrades lately. Lemdro.id runs on a ton of containerized services that scale horizontally for each part of the stack globally and according to load. It’s pretty cool. But my theory is that since the backend schedules inactive checking for 24 hours from when it starts that it simply was being restarted (upgraded) before it had a chance to check activity until it was too late.

    theory:

    • scheduled task checks instances every 24 hours
    • I updated (restarted it) more than every 24 hours
    • it never had a chance to run the check
    • ???
    • failure

This isn’t really a great design for inactivity checking and I’ll be submitting a pull request to fix it.
