Tbh I didn't mean to Lemmy, so much as simply off Twitter in general, preferably to a non-corporate social site. It may be naive/idealistic, but I think those most inclined to leave would be the better of the bunch, and those in-between are more apt to go to another corporate site anyway (e.g. Threads).

Are there any WYSIWYG html editors? just curious

Hello, i was looking for a wysiwyg html editors i could use for my personal website, perferrably just as a simple open source desktop program on linux (though anything else is fine). i DID find something called KompoZer but i was wondering if there's any other ones, thanks

Have you seen Publii yet? Dunno how well it works on Linux, but there's a version for Linux as well.

KDE Connect should only enable downloading files from allowed directories, right? [issue report found, may be very old notifications]

I was working on some stuff on my PC and stepped away for a bit, and on returning noticed notifications on it that some files had been downloaded via KDE Connect from my phone. I was using my phone at the time, and didn't send the files....

Fairly certain, as I hadn't downloaded anything on my phone when away from my PC that would have produced a notification to mirror. Also, sorry, I should have mentioned from the start that I typically run my phone in Do Not Disturb and Silent to minimize any notifications whatsoever.

On further digging I did notice that it looks as though the files mentioned in the notifications may have been downloads, but from literally years ago in, I think, every case (e.g. from 2018!). I don't think I even had Connect installed back then to have caught those notifications. 🤨

Is this ever noted in any of the documentation, outside of some fine print, with the printer to let someone know that it's being done? If your product is secretly leaving indicators for anyone aware of the indicators to track your actions in some way, that's problematic in my opinion.

Given a printer is arguably a lesser issue anymore, but the same idea applies with other tech.

That's kind of what I was thinking may be the case, but I'm not sure if I'm asking this well enough or if I may be misunderstanding ActivityPub.

It's not clear to me how, without communication/searching outside of an ActivityPub instance, it would ever find other ActivityPub instances to connect to and communicate with.

Yeah, to clarify I don't mean organizing/arranging files as a part of maintenance, moreso handling different installs/configs/updating. Sometimes since more folks come around to ask for help it can appear as if it's all much more involved to maintain than it may otherwise be (with a mix of the right setups and knowledge to deal with any hiccups).

When I hosted game servers: Depending on the game, you may have to fix something every few hours. Arma 3 is, by far, the worst. Which really sucks because the games can last really long, and it can be annoying to save and load with the GM tool thing.

Was that a mix of games being more involved and the way their server software was set up, from what you could tell, or...?

One is simply organizing your code by having a bunch of operations that could be performed on the same data be expressed as an object with different functions you could apply.

Not OP, but also interested in wrapping my head around OOP and I still struggle with this in a few different respects. If what I'm writing isn't a full program, but more like a few functions to process data, is there still a use case for writing it in an OOP style? Say I'm doing what you describe, operating on the same data with different functions, if written properly couldn't a program do this even without a class structure to it? 🤔

Perhaps it's inelegant and terrible in the long term, but if it serves a brief purpose, is it more in the case of long term use that it reveals its greater utility?

Thanks for elaborating! I'm pretty sure I've written some variations of the first form you mention in my learning projects, or broken them up in some other ways to ease myself into it, which is why I was asking as I did.

That could be part of it, but I was thinking more in terms of sharing resources like what you linked in your other comment as well as other methods to encourage community activity.

Also technical stuff like what to be aware of regarding banner/image resolutions, language settings, handling community handoffs to other moderators, etc. Basically a mix of more specific Lemmy support and general community building/outreach discussion.

Each time I've read into self-hosting it often sounds like opening stuff up to the internet adds a bunch of complexity and potential headaches, but I'm not sure how much of it is practicality vs being excessively cautious.

While I don't disagree with most of what you mention, I do have to ask on a couple points...Isn't it probably significantly more expensive for them to make foldable screens than to make a smaller phone? Also wouldn't a larger device mean more materials involved which may mean similar or just as high costs as to engineer something more compact?

Also these are open questions, I'm not expecting you personally to know one way or another, your comment simply inspired them. If someone else has some insight on them, would be interested to read it!

Then you’ve got seamless integration with Vscode as a bonus, it’s more like why would you not use GitHub unless you have a specific problem with them.

Does GitHub still only permit one account? I remember looking into it awhile back and not wanting to get things mixed up between personal/professional arrangements and the one account policy put me off.

I know Thunderbird technically has them, but I've had trouble making them work as effectively as I'd like. RSSOwl had some that were easier to work with, but stopped being updated. There's now a fork of it called RSSOwlnix, but I haven't taken the time to see whether it still works as well or not. May be worth looking into though...

I see where you're coming from, I think. In my experiences with trying to follow tutorials though, I've found the difficulty to be between rough explanations and the examples given feeling a little too simple and isolated from how they might be applied in a working program.

Another big, lingering question is why Meta wants to do this in the first place. Lambert says Meta wants to give users more control over their posts and followers, with easier avenues to engage across platforms.

So will they be implementing a method to export this data in ways that could be imported to other platforms? Otherwise I don't see where federation fits in here all that much.

Extending reach isn't really the same as control imo.

Have you tried/looked into Joplin yet? If I understand right, I think the one box it doesn't tick unfortunately is the first (at least in the Android app), as it supports markdown which is only rendered after leaving edit mode.

However, it does have checkboxes and the whole note doesn't have to be a checklist. You can write a description, add your checklist, add a horizontal separator line, another description, another checklist, all in the same note. It's also FOSS and actively updated. Bonus as well is that it can be used with Syncthing to sync notes to your other devices, and there's a desktop version which has some more flexibility over the Android app.

Smart Tube Next, ReVanced, or something similar on Roku?

I recently got clued into the fact that you can enable side-loading on Roku devices. However, I have no idea where to get the apps for it. Since Rokus don’t run Android, I can’t install APKs like I did on my Nvidia Shield TV. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Which kind of Roku device are you using? Stick, box, or tv? Reason I ask is that there may be some workarounds for some devices over others, e.g. casting from phone or screen-sharing from PC.

If the alien.top bots were running, the community would already have at least the 14 posts that were created on Reddit today and made to their front page.

If the posts are from a Reddit community’s few actual posters and none from any of the posters on Lemmy instances, what’s the incentive to switch over to Lemmy? Moreover, if someone’s mainly a poster, aren’t you only encouraging them to stay on Reddit and post as they know there’s someone handling mirroring their posts elsewhere for them?

I’ve read over the discussions around this and I can sort of see where you’re coming from for some of the few folks that want to lurk and browse Reddit stuff via Lemmy apps or the like, but I’m struggling to see how much it really helps different Lemmy instances draw more posters. This may help bring lurkers over, but from what I can tell, there’s not much of a problem with people lurking across Lemmy, but more of a poster problem, in terms of having a greater variety of people posting and commenting.
