I'm another git-flow fan. Have not encountered a situation that would motivate me to change workflow. We use submodules all over the place, too.

Public personal dev accounts: opinions?

I feel like there are many devs out there who expose a lot of personal details and opinions all over the web. Maybe it's just me, but when starting out with the internet I tried my best to separate my personal details (name, age, sex, country, ethnicity, family ties, relationship status,...) from usernames in public....

Mostly nothing. The Unicode Consortium isn't run by the US government. Neither is ANSI nor IEEE. The IETF and ISO are international bodies technically headquartered in Switzerland. FIPS picks standards, it doesn't author them.

Congratulations, you're already living in a world where "smart people [are] working for other smart people."

Wait hang on...

did not blow up, it faded, with its oriental counterpart well-flourishing for 10 centuries after that

How long do you think a century is? Did you mean to say decade? Even then, the US wasn't really a global superpower until the 1940s. There are people still alive that remember the Dust Bowl. If your question is, "what happens to regulatory standards 100 years after the US is gone," I'm not sure what quality of answer you're expecting.

For someone who doesn't want "chud shit," you sure do leave some pretty huge doors open for it. Especially when you don't go into any detail of what these regulatory bodies do. It reminds me of 14 year olds loudly declaring "I don't want any drama..." before "...but I think Becky got mouth herpes from blowing Steve at band camp."

shnizmuffin ,
@shnizmuffin@lemmy.inbutts.lol avatar

We found out two days later that Becky didn't blow anyone, no one had herpes, and the entire field hockey team got mononucleosis because they share water bottles.

Home Assistant can track device location using the companion app (iOS and Android). It would take a little work to save more than the default amount of information, but it's extremely do-able.

Here's my yesterday:

In 1974, Bill Hoyt, part of the original Blackmoor Bunch, started playing Dungeons & Dragons, which he'd got at Gary Gygax's house. Soon after, he began his own campaign.

These are rare maps and campaign notes from the very beginning of D&D.

Note: This download is pretty hefty, because it contains large scans of the original campaign map, as well as a modern redrawing.

I like to start my party off immediately after they failed their first quest. Session 1 is explaining the consequences of that failure, what that quest was, and how it went wrong.

For example: "Two towns hold us responsible for the bridge that collapsed in our fight with the troll, who escaped, because we didn't burn the body. We're at worst fugitives, and at best in extreme debt. The adventurer's guild is pissed that we failed, too, and is demanding their cash advance back."

It's kinda like a popcorn movie so far (ep 5). Enjoyable, obvious, fun. Campy. So violent it's not.

I can't recall any time Fallout was overly serious or, "hit home." Maybe Cait's companion quests in FO4? The "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" mission in FO3? Even those examples are just well-told stories rather than emotional rollercoasters.

Composerize - online tool converts docker commands to compose yml ( www.composerize.com )

I had an issue recently with getting FileBrowser to run and while researching that, I found this tool which creates a docker-compose.yml file from a docker run command. It worked well for me, so I am passing it along to you all. I hope someone else finds this helpful....

shnizmuffin ,

Hey I love this tool but be careful if your docker run command is super long or complicated, it's not perfect.

A fad? No, definitely not. TypeScript brings features (and structure) that will /should probably make their way into JS.

It's sort of like asking, "does SASS replace CSS" or "is liquid the next HTML?" They're just implementations of features FE developers want in the core spec of JS, CSS, and HTML.

Since you posted this into a self-hosting community...

You are the alternative to SquareSpace. Grab a Raspberry Pi, slap nginx proxy manager and ddclient into it, and point your domain to your home IP.

From the web development side of things? Eleventy is my pick for SSG. For a novice, the best part about using 11ty is that it supports a ton of different front end templating languages. That means you can find which one you like the best without having to hello world a million times. Keep your content as markdown and pass it into Nunjucks, WEBC, Vue, fuckin' whatever.

shnizmuffin ,
@shnizmuffin@lemmy.inbutts.lol avatar

If you want a 100% uptime website that can handle surge traffic but also costs basically nothing when it's not being used, you're going to want to avoid traditional CMSs like Wordpress and learn to code. Deploy 11ty to Netlify with the understanding that if you're irresponsible with forms or suddenly blow through your bandwidth you're going to pay for the service to scale to meet demand.

If you absolutely must have a CMS, I'd recommend Statamic because it can act as an SSG and deploy to Netlify (which means you use the CMS as a local devtool only - no logging in over the internet). It's another one of those "bring your own front end" CMSs, but their Antlers templating language is completely fine.

shnizmuffin ,
@shnizmuffin@lemmy.inbutts.lol avatar

As for the server, I recommend to start with the cheapest hosting available (e.g. $5/month vps) and move on to a bigger server if it proves to be too small to handle your site’s traffic.

This is correct.

If you're asking about CPU, RAM, and bandwidth then, "you don't have a problem until it's a problem." Redline the cheapest option until it catches fire.

shnizmuffin ,
@shnizmuffin@lemmy.inbutts.lol avatar

It is extremely more than that.

This is solved by slapping your design's color scheme on the <body>, correct?

Also:

  • text highlight colors are jacked
  • yellow-on-pink is a no-no

shnizmuffin ,
@shnizmuffin@lemmy.inbutts.lol avatar

Oh, Statamic is a BYOFE (Bring Your Own Front End). Out of the box, it gives you a templating language that you can take or leave. You are 100% responsible for all HTML, CSS, and whatever JS you feel like bringing to the table. There's no handling of colors or anything to override, because that's all on you. SSG is a mode it has, it's not the default.

It's pretty close to being a flat-file ExpressionEngine, if that helps.
