I'm a bit (maybe a lot) of a noob to Linux

What are Udev rules and bash scripts?

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I never knew that was called bash, not sure how I missed the name up to this point lol

And Udev sounds like something I'm going to get a hell of a lot of use out of given my love of Tasker on Android (basically have it set to do specific things when certain triggers occur (like connecting or disconnecting to or from specific Bluetooth devices, reading specific NFC tags, etc)). I just never thought of trying to set something up like that on my desktops.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I've also got to thank you for those guides

I'm going to use the hell out of Udev now that I know it exists

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Half the fun of fixing my code later is trying to figure out what the hell I was thinking when I wrote my code lol

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Hell yeah that's freaking awesome

I hope to see these become popular someday and with that kind of increase they're likely to get a shit ton of funding

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You mean the small gaps in the filament?

Those won't go away with sanding unless you go really deep

And personally for a prototype sanding is a waste of time. Get something working as you expect, then roughly design a case, iterate the case, finalize the case design, then finally worry about surface finish.

Torrenting exposes your public IP. In a country where government doesn't care, does that pose a risk?

I honestly don't believe I will have any legal trouble because I don't do anything like cp or worse, I just pirate media I like, not even porn. But across users of communities, or on public trackers, is IP exposure something to be concerned about?

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Cheap VPNs typically are cheap for a reason, and those reasons typically make them not worth the savings (like logging data and selling it)

Of course if your country doesn't care then sail away brother and be sure to seed

My country unfortunately cares a lot so a VPN is mandatory for me

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Personally I use Ventoy

Basically I can just throw a whole bunch of ISOs on a USB drive and when I boot it it brings me to a menu to pick which one I want to boot

It's freaking great

I've got various windows ISOs and Linux distros just living on a 64GB flash drive

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It has gotten a lot better over the years

That was basically my first experience with it as well also about 5 years ago

Nowadays it works like a dream come true for every OS I've thrown on the drive

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

NGL I think it should all brain chips should fall under "concerning" and "controversial"

The artificial eyes that existed in the past come to mind.

For those unfamiliar, when the companies that made them went under support for the devices vanished and the people who got them were left with broken and defunct hardware still stuck in their heads

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

They got to weasel out of admitting wrong doing as part of the settlement?

What a joke

My players dipped into one of the mega dungeons I've made

Shit was wild and they plan to go back to explore some more but they're wanting to get stronger first

Little do they know there's MORE mega dungeons to be found that they haven't discovered yet

Edit: The one that they have been into had different layers with different kinds of environments and critters. They only made it a few layers down before they turned back due to the dangers.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Hell yeah that's cool AF

I wonder how well it runs on the Pi 5

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Always nice to see more ARM support from things

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Cool

I'm learning more and more about Linux while using Linux Mint

It's pretty cool NGL

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I use Linux Mint on a bunch of my machines

In general it's pretty painless

I still have a Windows machine but I'm hoping to fix that soon

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

So you're running windows without system updates, without restore points, AND without windows defender?

That's pretty daring raw dogging the internet like that

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Depending on your game preference it may be already there in some aspects

Basically it depends on the kind of anticheat the game has

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

When I looked into it the first thread I found about it mentioned that those were disabled

But looking back at it the thread was from a year ago

2 of my DnD group when they found out about my little project wanted me to check their favorite D20's as well.

Those are being tested this evening and I'm excited to see the results.

Dice tower

Specifically this one

It's got a spiral staircase from top to bottom for the dice to bounce around

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Unfortunately I'm unable to open the link, it seems broken

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I looked at the results of each roll and then entered it directly into a spreadsheet

The stat cards are generated straight from the data

Using some formulas in the spreadsheet I tell it to see which numbers come up in a range of cells, then count each instance of the numbers, then order the results in a table from most common to least common.

The averages are generated in a similar way. Basically I tell the spreadsheet to add the number of cells that have data in them in a specific range together, then have it divide by the number of faces on the die (the magic number here bugs me but I'll let it slide for now), and then it puts the result into a cell.

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I tested 17 D20's today and the spread was definitely interesting

I had 3 that had averages over 11 and only 2 under 10

3 of them had the most common roll being a 1 and 1 had 2.

Funnily enough the 1 with 2 as the most common result had an average result of 10.73. So it was still favorable to the dice roller as it beat 10.5.

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

100 per D20

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Different strokes for different folks really

Personally I like playing characters with crappy stats over unfavorable dice

One of my favorite DnD characters I ever played had only 2 stats over 10; a 12 and an 11.

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I know some of these words

Mind giving an ELI5 version?

Here's the data for 100 rolls with the yellow die if it helps.

I copied it right out of the spreadsheet so I'm pretty sure it's formatting is borked.

I guess you could say the 100 rolls per die was for an initial test to see if anything statistically abnormal may be happening.

I'm going to up the tests to 250 for the 3 most and least favorable dice to see if they really are super favorable or unfavorable.

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I tested 17 dice each being rolled 100 times

I can share the rest of the sheet in about 10 hours when I'm done with my shift today

I can't link it directly due to making it in my Google Drive and I don't feel like doxxing myself today lol

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I gave the tool a test using the data on the rolls I mentioned in the previous comment (under the spoiler tag) and it said "very statistically significant"

Definitely worth looking more into it IMO

Time to gather more data!

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Here's a link to a PDF version of the data

This is the version with only 100 rolls per die

I'll be doing more rolls very soon, though this will take quite awhile

Gormadt OP ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

So far 2 dice in and the new results are looking very interesting

It's going to be probably a couple days for the new results but I'll make a more detailed post for sure including the amount of times each number came up on each die

@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Shit where I work the cell service is terrible inside the building but the moment you walk outside the building it's perfect

Our building has a wavy metal roof and wavy metal siding

Edit: Spleling

"Now announcing UnRAID 2, UnRAID original will no longer receive updates as we focus our resources on UnRAID 2."

And "UnRAID 2" will only have a subscription model, and people will the OG lifetime license won't be grandfathered into the new license.

Like Adobe and Photoshop.

I'd say it'll happen before 2030.

But I may just be cynical at this point.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

A lot of the data in the video file you take isn't that visible but it's there for when you put it in editing software

For example: if you took that lower sized YouTube rip and threw it into editing software to tinker with the brightness (as a simple example) you quickly start getting artifacts whereas the video you took would be able to handle the editing without the artifacts much better as there's more data to work with

Basically the YouTube video has had all the extra data scrapped off that it doesn't need because it's not going to be edited, it's only going to be viewed

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I am as well but it looks like it's new accounts every time and they make just a single post, the spam post

At least this time the spam is just an image link to some random discord server and not CSAM

Amazon clearly lying about "ownership" on Prime. ( lemmy.world )

You all remember just a few weeks ago when Sony ripped away a bunch of movies and TV shows people “owned”? This ad is on Amazon. You can’t “own” it on Prime. You can just access it until they lose the license. How can they get away with lying like this?

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That's the best part

They redefine "own" and "buy" in their TOS

And so do many many other online retailers that sell digital goods
