My god i shouldn't have read the thread you crossposted from

Glorious ship btw

Do you use the device you torrent on for personal things as well?

I'm just curious as I've permanently dedicated my laptop to torrenting. I've been too nervous to install anything but the VPN and Firefox on it. Now, I'm curious to mess around with Linux some more, which is what I use on it, but I can't fully test out what all I can do with it without signing into accounts....

jnk ,

Who said anything about torrenting something illegal 👀

As far as I'm concerned, everything i discuss here is for educational purposes only and even if you share info about "your" setup, it's just hypothetical. Not your fault if someone you totally don't know has the same setup you described and uses it for illegal activities.

Stirling-PDF: Locally hosted web application that allows you to perform various operations on PDF files ( github.com )

This is a robust, locally hosted web-based PDF manipulation tool using Docker. It enables you to carry out various operations on PDF files, including splitting, merging, converting, reorganizing, adding images, rotating, compressing, and more. This locally hosted web application has evolved to encompass a comprehensive set of...

Do you think this would pass the grandma test? If so I'm 100% going to host this (mainly for my mother, hence the question)

To be fair, there's already a general consensus in which are the "beginner friendly" distros, which includes the community support and familiarity with windows. Most people would probably recommend Mint to a new or switching user, for example.

After someone is used to a more basic linux distro, diversity and complexity are pros rather than cons. "Oh you need a distro with super specific specs for a niche use case? There's 5, you can pick or try them all". I could have linux on every machine i own, including a TV or even a thermostat, and I'd have a different setup.

jnk ,

I see no contradictions between "simple is good" and "monolitic/corporate based like windows and macos tend to be shit". If anything, reality is the opposite of what you think. We can have many different simple and ready to go distros, i mean that's like the whole point.

If you install windows, for example, you can use it for many things, and it'll be mid crap in all of that and need hours of setting up (not to mention some mandatory scripts to get the bare minimum of efficiency, privacy, and clean adware and bloatware). Then, if you need to game, just install nobara and go. Need to do office or web-based stuff? Mint all the way. Same thing but you like apple aesthetic? Try Zorin. I could go on and on for hours with different use cases and distros, but you should get the thing by now.

jnk ,

Plot twist: you're running the same distro

jnk ,

I've seen examples of this already where schools give kids laptops running a custom linux distro for education and they just roll with it. Also, the steamdeck happened, and a lot of people loved it before even realizing it's just linux... We should definitely give more support to companies shipping machines with linux preinstalled (even if the first thing I'll do is another install lol)

jnk ,

Hard agree on this. Sell software and services to companies, only sell services to end users. I believe both selling your service as a dev and selling a service behind a free app are compatible with copyleft.

jnk ,

Trusting someone for convenience isn't ideal, but not everyone has the time and resources to audit, compile, and host a dumb frontend for yt. Most of the people here is good enough trusting literally anyone except a big tech company, including FOSS devs, the people who check the code, and public instances of their software. Even considering recent drama (solved by the community btw) I'd trust any FOSS project over google any day.

Earlier this week i ended up pirating some games i actually own because it was easier that way than the official one (which involved going through 3 freaking launchers for one game!), so there's the answer lol.

I haven't found a serious critic that didn't rely on fucking racism yet. If the only real argument is "rUsSian cOmPAny bAD" but you're ok with USA companies, you're just braindead.

I don't even use windows for that same reason, but if a windows user asks me, based on past experiences with low end computers (where you can actually tell the diference), I'd always recommend kaspersky for performance and malwarebytes for precision.

Pro tip: Downvotes without arguments only prove my point.

jnk ,

Once a software vendor demonstrates theyre untrustworthy, why would I risk using their products?

How are you using windows then? They've had innumerable security breaches, not to talk about how MS demonstrates again and again that the only thing they care about is money. Does "trustworthy" mean "american" or "only sells my data to the USA gov and other US companies" then sure, it is trustworthy as fuck.

Of course you will invalidate that with some mental gymnastics, but this same thing happens even with freaking usb (charge only, mind me) cables from aliexpress, with people saying they have fucking chips to spy on you. Again, racism.

And spare us from the sophist personal attack on people you disagree with

Try to put it however you want, but hating anything that comes from one place just because of that, then adding excuses is fucking racist.

except there's no question of there being significant Russian efforts to meddle in the US and other countries.

And here comes the grand patriotic justification for racism! If you really don't have shit to say about the actual software, just block me or something and spare me from your presence :)

My guy i bet you're frustrated, shit happens a lot, but you should take a break and some deep breaths before asking for help. No one wants to help a clearly angry person.

Have you tried asking gpt itself what tried to do? Tell it also what actually happened when you ran the code. If you use GPT, don't use it blindly and definitely never run generated code on your main machine if you don't know what it does.

Can you replicate the error and share screenshots? Maybe edit the post so more knowledgeable people bothers to read and help?

"This is completle free to use, download, modify, redistribute, etc by anyone except Dave. Fuck Dave."

    I don't know how legal that'd be, but i wouldn't even complain.

Anti malware that can detect cracks and flag them as so, but can also distinguish from trojact and malware? Also, that can be configured to don't use too many resources when not required

I was thinking, mbam, have you got other suggestions for Windows 10? Also, is there a good setup for when I'm running games I bought, and I don't need active scanning of threats? (Especially for legit games that use resources intensively)

    jnk ,

Extremely case where I'm going to defend windows; but Ms Defender never killed performance in a pc even if i had a low-end one.

Considering all the bloatware windows has, OP would be better off fighting like literally every other program except Defender...

    jnk ,

Oh i also agree with that, just wanted to clarify that

    jnk ,

It would make more sense to change that to "Community managers are managed by contributors". Less effort for them and potentially better moderation.

    jnk ,

What a bunch of greedy clowns. Not only that's illegal to do afaik, it's not even technically possible. Hell even if they could, that would accomplish absolutely nothing.

The only thing they could've try to pull was to ask spanish ISPs to block IPTV altogether, but then again, easily solved with a VPN. Stupid fight to pick if you ask me.

    jnk ,

I'm spanish, never even thought about searching for pirate iptv streams (just used some official ones).

Just turned on some random free vpn and started to search for pirate iptv streams; 100% counterproductive ban lol.

Edit: also jellyfin can get iptv along with my super legal media collection. Again, why? If you ban something, ban the streams not the client...

    jnk ,

No it is not by a long fucking shot. Our "socialist" party is NOT socialist, they're just "left" wing corrupted liberals. We basically only have [insert color]-wing corrupted liberals, anyone stating otherwise is just too deep in propaganda.

Would you teach your kids how to pirate?

My gf and I have had discussions about teaching morals to kids. In that vein, I asked myself, would I teach piracy to my kids? Yes, it’s technically illegal and carries inherent risks. But so does teenage sex carry the risks of teenage pregnancy, and so we have an obligation to children to teach them how to practice safe sex....

    jnk ,

Nobody taught me, so I'm not teaching anyone.
Nobody banned me from doing it tho, so there's my answer. Piracy is a consequence of freedom, among other things.
