Oh that's really dumb

Maybe they should've rushed it instead of delaying it lol

@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

https://tl.net/ The old Team Liquid forums, still the best place to discuss StarCraft

And I guess if Reddit was ActivityPub that would be good too

Does Lemmy instance server software already allow for plugins or extensions

Issue tracking for plugins/extensions, if you click subscribe on the issue then you'll get email updates for it https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3562

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

tl;dr: apps should login with the username die4ever@programming.dev similar to email, instead of choosing instance programming.dev and then typing in die4ever for username separately

yea that probably would be simpler, I'm sure some apps already do this

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

at this point I think we might need comments more than posts, there's lots of posts already but most of them are lacking comments

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I haven't seen this, I only browse Subscribed not All

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I think admins curating the feed is… Interesting but also kind of dangerous

just letting the admins set defaults would be better than forcing these choices upon their users, which I think is was the above user was suggesting, which is kinda what Reddit does with having default subs

The active sort still showing 2 days old posts is not ideal.

why not? if they're getting new comments then they're still active

Active (default): Calculates a rank based on the score [of the post] and time of the latest comment, with decay over time

it's like something inbetween Hot and classic forums-style sorting (New Comments sort in Lemmy)

but I do not think that should be the default sort method, instance admins can already adjust what the default sort method is

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Tournaments and also digital versions of the game. I think Scrabble might be popular on Facebook?

Discoverability of communities across instances

If the spirit of the fediverse is to spread everything across small instances, then i think it would be really important to make communities, especially niche communities, easier to discover across instances. Since it is not planned to crawl federated instances community catalog, i think instance admins, or maybe even the lemmy...

Quick video demonstrating that lemmy.world sends every activity out twice ( i.imgur.com )

I realise this is a known issue and that lemmy.world isn't the only instance that does this. Also, I'm aware that there are other things affecting federation. But I'm seeing some things not federate, and can't help thinking that things would be going smoother if all the output from the biggest lemmy instance wasn't 50% spam....

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Being able to respond to old posts is a good thing, like classic forums. I always hated that Reddit didn't allow you to do that, and Reddit also didn't have sort options for New Comments or Active.

Imagine if someone made a post about a tech issue, it ranked high on Google results, lots of people in the comments with the same issue, and you found the solution, but the post was too old to reply to.

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

It's there now, the crawler found you. Congrats!

Regarding sublinks and feeling concerned about what is going on with it ( lemmy.world )

Right now, I'm feeling concerned and wondering what is going on in regards to Sublinks here, since I have created a community for discussion on koalas about a week ago on here and have started and been doing work on it recently. But now I'm hearing about Sublinks and feeling concerned if I created it on the wrong instance or the...

Also the moderation tools could've been Java and connect to the Lemmy database/API (maybe with some pull requests to add to Lemmy's API), which to me sounds a lot better than saying fuck it and rewriting everything, it could've lived in its own repo anyways

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I still feel like adding those API routes and making PRs is easier than a full rewrite, with less fragmentation too

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I believe there are a large number of feature requests on Lemmy’s GitHub page, making it difficult for developers to prioritize what’s truly important to users.

Btw GitHub allows you to sort issues by number of thumbs ups, and I believe the devs use this

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+sort%3Areactions-%2B1-desc

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+sort%3Areactions-%2B1-desc

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Yeah we actually have a pretty good number of posts and votes but not enough comments in them usually

I guess because people post about the niche they're interested in, but there aren't enough people to always find many others interested in it too

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I don't think the chosen language should matter that much, I'm just worried about the fragmentation of the contributors

duplicated work that could've just been done together, or as 3rd party tools that link to the base Lemmy database/API, or plugins/extensions eventually

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Searchability is bad.

Growing a new community is hard. I wish people used lemmyverse more often.

Try this https://lemy.lol/post/19638974

@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

An issue for this has been filed https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2951

For now, try this tool https://lemy.lol/post/19638974

So ffmpeg gets a few thousand dollars for such a simple answer/solution? Sounds good to me?

With discord planning to show ads, how can the fediverse/lemmy benefit from another proprietary program making itself worse? (Like it was with reddit)

Do you think that the fediverse has something to gain with the enshitfication of discord? Are there voice chat programs in the fediverse that can benefit from it?

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I haven't tried matrix yet. What's a good instance I can create my community on and bridge with my discord? For gaming communities.

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I guess, but I don't really want to contribute to the centralization all on the biggest instance

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

would be nice if the communities page could show the date of the most recent post or something

but I guess anything with 0 users per month is obviously dead, unless it's like an infrequently used announcements community

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I think the holdup is that previously SMS was paid for through your carrier, so Google can let any app use it and no one loses money. Now the main RCS instance is hosted by Google, and I guess Google doesn't want other apps freeloading on their servers since you're not paying for RCS directly like you are paying your carrier. It really sucks and I hope it gets resolved soon, especially with Apple joining in. We also need a good open source RCS server and client.

I'm a big fan of their The Walking Dead games. For a long time I thought the final season would never be finished, but I think it was like a couple years later and it was bought out and finished, and miraculously it was actually good too.

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I do think there could be some features added to help avoid full defederation. Like if instance admins could set a default list of banned instances, and the users could choose to unban those instances for themselves. Of course defederation could still be necessary sometimes like for illegal content, software bugs, or malicious attacks.

Because if I didn't use Discord then I would be the only one in the community. Discord has a massive userbase especially with gamers. You give them a Discord link and there's a decent chance you'll see them join and post a message. Give them any other link and they'll never make an account, they probably won't even click the link to see it.

I provide links for Discord, Lemmy, Kbin, Mastodon, Steam group, and GitHub. I see lots of people come in on Discord, but 0 on the others except for myself lol.

Only the few actual contributors use the GitHub, don't think I've ever seen a non-programmer submit a bug report on my GitHub or use the discussions or leave any comments on releases or anything.

I'm also on Moddb and NexusMods, got a few comments on Moddb, none on Nexusmods yet.

I also have Twitch and YouTube of course, I get small numbers of people commenting on those.

Nobody has even asked for any other type of community, Discord is just want they want. If I just wanted to talk to myself then I wouldn't bother creating a community/forum at all.

94 days (they said 2252 hours in the article) on 28,000 mAh? that means a more normal phone with 5,000 mAh would get nearly 17 days of standby time? I've never tried not touching my phone for a full day but I don't believe that, not with Android running. Maybe if it was untouched and in airplane mode lol.

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

@einat2346 actually dbzer0 doesn't have access to your IP address, only lemmy.today sees it

for everyone else it's the instance that your account lives on

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

This is interesting. I think I'd rather it just keep my actual web browser app in RAM and always open that with a new tab instead of the basic system web view. Or can you change which web browser app is the default web view? Seems like a waste to keep the web view in RAM and also your web browser app

Android 15 DP1 has added the "notification cooldown" feature I first revealed in the Android 14 QPR2 beta for
@AndroidPolice. This feature "gradually lower[s] the notification volume when you get many successive notifications from the same app."

I've wanted a feature like this for so long lol

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I've been enjoying Boost lately

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

the Mastodon user has to do an @ tag for the community in their toot, so if @community is in their toot then it'll show up on that Lemmy community

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I'm surprised they're still on 0.18.4. They made that big post complaining about moderation actions not federating, then the 0.18.5 hotfix came out and the only change was that fix, and they never updated anyways? I even put a comment on their post to let them know the hotfix for their issue. There's no database changes, it's the simplest update.

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

side-loaded videos

Fucking Apple lol, just let people play video files, this should be basic minimum functionality

Lemmy needs better integration/federation. Too much content is hidden. A community on the biggest instance was not visible to me on another large instance.

I did a search from shitjustworks for "reddit die" and did not find https://lemmy.world/c/watchredditdie so I made https://sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie (unnecessarily). This should really not happen. When someone makes a community there should be a "ping" sent out to notify all other federated instances....

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

that was fixed, I think in v0.19.0, but your instance hasn't updated yet

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I'm surprised there was no issue filed for this already, maybe I just failed to find it, but I made a new issue

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/4412

if anyone wants to give it a thumbs up reaction then the devs will know to prioritize it, and if you have any ideas you could leave a comment there

Edit: that was somewhat a duplicate of this issue

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2951

Give that one a thumbs up

The main feature i would like to see on Lemmy

Im pretty satisfied with Lemmy, but one thing i wish you could do is browse instances. Like i wish there was a way i could almost emulate being on my programming.dev account and see all that instances communities while im logged into this account. Afaik theres no easy way to do that without visiting some aggregator website. It...

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

all this because of misuse of the latest tag and unwillingness to downgrade the version? lol seems a little excessive but hopefully it turns out good

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

use Kbin's search and search for @community_name@server, it's the same as Lemmy except you use an @ sign at the front instead of an ! sign

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Sure unless your instance is defederated, we need more ways to control the content without relying on defederation

It makes me feel like I should be making the post to multiple communities, but then I feel like I'm spamming

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Yeah I think there needs to be more options though, for admins and for users. Like conditional caching or proxying of images from other instances.

And not just blocking instances but choosing to block all the users from an instance without blocking their communities, or only blocking their comments not their posts. Also admins should be able to set default blocks that all the users get but can change individually

Die4Ever , (edited )
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

I guess this feature request would help you?

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3809

So communities could disallow link posts

Die4Ever ,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

sorry what do you mean?

the feature request is suggesting the ability to disallow link posts, as well as the ability to disallow text posts

Ability to disallow certain kinds of posts (text posts/link posts) in specific communities

Currently it is not possible to disallow using the text field or URL field in specific communities.

Similarly one could imagine a setting to disallow using the URL field, for example in a conversation-only community.
