ChromeOS is Gentoo-based and does use the Linux kernel, but everything in the userspace has little to do with the Linux desktop besides Crostini, which is just a Debian container.

That's unlike Android, whose kernel derives itself from a heavily gutted version of the Linux kernel, redesigned to support closed source binary blob drivers provided by device manufacturers and with low level support for the Dalvik JVM. Its API has little to do with the mainstream Linux kernel.

I want freaking suggestions from the browser though, in a way that respects my privacy

I use Kagi and DuckDuckGo, but some users may still be on Google.

I like that the option is there, don't be an elitist.

Uhhh, RHEL, Ubuntu and Pop!_OS, respectively?

The 7a is great, no reason the 8a wouldn't also be. Go for it!

Smart pricks

It's some Indian publication, they have a talent for picking the weirdest names

It's a shame most religious texts frequently call for violence then, isn't it?

Have you given the bible or the quran a serious read?

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

You mean the KDE spin and Atomic KDE variant have no X11 anymore?

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

Oof that sounds hella unprofessional though

I have a feeling most of these people are either NEETs or never used a work computer.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

Not if you have ADHD, the barrier to success needs to be really low.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

Which I will lose, alongside the notepad.

Hell, I lose my phone and find my laptop in the laundry bins sometimes. ADHD is making me demented.

Searching for emails sucks balls compared to Outlook, and accessing any semblance of advanced search is not obvious as you have to go through the top bar.

I can't even do from:email@address.com in the search field, I have to go to advanced search, which is missing other features.

I have YouTube Premium but I have to use ReVanced to block shorts because it's terrible for my ADHD. My mental health has improved ever since I ripped that fucker out of my life.

I want to control what I see, and this isn't even about them being paid anymore, it's just about forcing me to see what I don't want to see.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh on desktop it's not a problem, I use an extension to block shorts

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-shorts-block/

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

They always re-appear and I'm tempted to click on them, that's the main issue.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

Another good one I use! As well as AdNauseam and SponsorBlock, obviously :P

You can try JetBrains Rider for .NET, but it's only natural that you won't be able to write Windows applications outside of Windows.

I'm personally impartial to JetBrains for my IDEs on Linux, they work really well and are well supported.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

This is why GNOME hasn't implemented it yet, they want to wait until it's perfect and not experimental before adding the feature.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

I use Kagi, and so far, it seems to casually switch it back with that message about once a month.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

I do hope to see more competition in the Linux gaming space. It's not good long term to fully rely on Valve for everything.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

It doesn't matter that Epic is giving away games that only run on a platform I don't use. They won't get my money until they get their heads out of their asses about Linux.

That's a nah from me. Beat Google / Apple at support or I'm not considering the product.

It's still hardware in the trash in 4 years, regardless of cost to the end user. I intend to keep my Pixel 6 until it dies or runs out of security updates in 3 years, whichever comes first.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

I don't see why cheaper hardware would have to last less long, or even if it should, from an ethical and e-waste standpoint.

@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

I guess that's fair, it's wishful thinking on my part that mobile computing could be like laptops or desktops. I still personally wouldn't get a device without a long update guarantee, you get better bang for your buck even with a pricier device since you're keeping it longer and it's better for the environment.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

instead of its own chip

You mean the Exynos?

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

It's not open-source without the license. I think they may be confusing source available with open source.

In the case of JavaScript, obfuscation turns source code into a compilation result for performance and "security" reasons. It removes unused tokens, comments, spaces, newlines, etc. to reduce the data transfer size.

So, by definition, non-obfuscated code is source code, as it is the code the compiled or built product originates from. However, most sites on the web don't ship source code, only minified and obfuscated code.

I can't recommend KDE for people who aren't comfortable with computers as there are so many settings they can get into without knowing how to get it back the way it was.

GNOME with Dash to Panel is usually good enough for those used to Windows' layout, and you can set them up with Silverblue to get the same immutability.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

What actively supported distro still uses GNOME 3.38?

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

I'm on AMD, so I've been on Wayland since around 2021. Haven't really experienced any issues.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

They really aren't. As much as I hate Apple, their engineers are skilled people kneecapped by corporate decisions.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

We still shouldn't attack the software engineers for what is a management problem.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

You can start your own instance, and you could even develop a compatible, federated protocol like kbin. That's the beauty of the fediverse.

isVeryLoud , (edited )
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

Thanks, I'll have to give it a try now haha

Edit: it does not handle automatic language switching and the auto correct is a bit dumb :( otherwise a cool idea.

Wdym these days? Would you sit at the table with a neo nazi? Thought not. I wouldn't sit at the table with someone who's undoing years of scientific progress in eradicating deadly diseases.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

They're from Mastodon, even wilder things happen there.

isVeryLoud ,
@isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca avatar

No, you have no idea what you just read.

Are you on Linux Mobile perchance? What I assume is your digital keyboard has really bad touch heuristics.
