I have replayed Half Life 2 a few times. Some parts of the game feel really goofy now. There are many physics based puzzles in game. Like needing to weigh down a see saw like platform with cinder blocks to get across a gap. I think at the time these were really revolutionary, but they feel silly now. At the same time, I'm hard pressed to think of shooters that still include that type of puzzle (but I also don't play many shooters nowadays).

Ravenholm was terrifying! The fast zombies' roars along with them jumping across buildings really got to me.

Coming to terms with no longer having privacy and control over my technology

I miss the days of VHS and DVD shelfs in homes, for example. If you bought the tapes and had them in your home, no corporate entity could alter those tapes without your consent, monitor how many times you watch them, sell your data to whomever they please without your knowledge, roll out new mandatory conditions to a 'user...

DEFCON - Linux: Game contacts a key verification server as described here. Win and Mac have offline executables that skip the verification. But under Linux there is no DRM-free offline executable.

I find this sort of funny.

JackbyDev ,

This would help explain why there are so few spells compared to the infinite possibilities of magic. Many problems are solved. There are only so many ways to sort a list and many of them are either entirely unuseful or only good for specific situations. Turns out there's only one way to make a fireball. Every other way doesn't work as good.

JackbyDev ,

Also, as someone who didn't understand this, most of the crazy stuff you get right away. I think because it sort of looks like Terraria I thought a lot of stuff is crazy high level items but it's not.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services ( www.theguardian.com )

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

JackbyDev ,

I need to look into capturing. Feels like a nice middle ground.

JackbyDev ,

I think that it serves two purposes:

  1. Their physical presence makes it clear that the group is taking everyone's limits seriously. Compare "Just say stop if you don't like something" to "Everyone has a button. I care about everyone and want everyone to feel comfortable. Press the button if you're uncomfortable." The phyiscal aspect makes it extremely clear that the group has gone out of their way to make it a priority. It's hard to speak up for yourself. It can be awkward. Knowing that the group took it seriously enough to get physical objects for it will help people understand they're more welcome to stop things.
  2. Pushing a button or tapping something can be a lot easier than saying something. A lot of people can get nonverbal when they're uncomfortable.

Tiny computer about the size of an Altoids tin targeted at hobbyists and students.

JackbyDev ,

Not that I wanted one or trusted Musk before, but after the cyber truck fiasco I couldn't imagine lol

JackbyDev ,

Re edit: That combined with double touch screens made me think this was all a shit post lol

JackbyDev ,

I remember a lot of problems on launch

JackbyDev ,

and didn't introduce anything their other consoles didnt already have (nor have I ever seen someone use half the features).

I don't remember undocking my PS4 to play it on the go.

JackbyDev ,

You've basically described all gaming consoles lol

JackbyDev ,

I think it's because they're targeting a very small number of devices as opposed to the infinite number of possible combinations of hardware a computer could have.

JackbyDev ,

You can't compare Wii U because it has to be super close to the console and not all games could be played on the game pad. Unless the Vita had HDMI output then this was definitely a new feature of game consoles. Maybe you can compare NetBooks to the Switch if you're being generous but laptops and phones are a totally different form factor.

Is D&D in danger? D&D is in this weird place where it's in the middle of a lot of things. It's honestly pretty complex compared to actually rules light systems, but it's still much less complex than Pathfinder. If folks want more crunch they go to Pathfinder.

D&D has two pillars. Combat and everything else. I know that WotC defines it differently but generally I think it's easier to view like this. Everything I'm combat is extremely rigid. Everything outside is pretty flexible. Sure, exploration has more rigid rules than social interactions but I genuinely don't believe many people use rigid exploration rules. I think a lot of players dislike combat for a big variety of reasons. There are extremely few class-specific special things some classes can do outside of combat. Do fighters get anything special? Not really. And a lot of spells can totally negate specific things other players might be able to contribute.

It would be really nice to have flexible combat but I don't think there's a good way to do it without fundamentally changing the game. Instead, I believe every class needs to have meaningful ways to contribute to each pillar of play that cannot be one-upped by spells.

Another thing, I believe every class should have the same amount of limited resources more like 4th edition but I don't think there's a way to fix that in 5th edition or the new version without fundamentally rewriting everything.

JackbyDev ,

Why do you label the link "Anti Commerical-AI licence" instead of "CC BY-NC-SA 4.0" as it is titled?

JackbyDev ,

I would also like to have made this a video of some kind to make it more personal (mostly so you can hear my voice and intonation/emotion in it), but it would take me too long to make it at my current production schedule timelines. I've already been spending a fucking month working on a mostly done Pikmin 3 speedrun video that has been constantly interrupted by this shit. As much as I'd like to do this, I don't think it's in the cards.

JackbyDev ,

This post contains massive spoilers for Neon Genesis Evangelion, The End of Evangelion, and the four part revival Evangelion movies.

A Cruel Angel's Thesis

In order to properly convey the level of emotions that I feel about this situation, I need you to understand the weight of The End of Evangelion.

I can't get through this article without leaving quotes of it as comments.

JackbyDev ,

As if Reddit was free of toxic interactions lol

JackbyDev ,

This isn't about using one or the other, it's about not exploding when you encounter a tab.

JackbyDev ,

Interest rates just shot way the fuck up too. And while they were really good around 2021 a lot of folks were still struggling from being out of work

JackbyDev ,

As required by the licenses, yes. That's the bare minimum lol.

The Debian website is trash and I'm glad to see it acknowledged. People always take criticism of the website as if folks are saying it looks ugly. No. The layout is just icky.

JackbyDev ,

No excuse for websites that render poorly on mobile nowadays.

JackbyDev ,

I don't have a problem with the look, just the organization.

JackbyDev ,

YES! YES! This is exactly what I'm talking about.

JackbyDev ,

They offered a few thousand dollars, but not a long term contract.

JackbyDev ,

I'm honestly in favor of something like that, but when people are saying SSPL isn't FOSS because it supposedly discriminates against different classes of users, we won't get the momentum for people to view any sort of "FOSS except for commercial" license as valid or worth using.

Some such licenses exist (not saying they're good or anything). PolyForm Noncommercial and PolyForm Small Business are two examples https://polyformproject.org/licenses/

JackbyDev ,

Nobody in the south says shit like this unironically lmao.

Netscape

JackbyDev ,

I only left the comment because of my pfp being the old Netscape logo haha

JackbyDev , (edited )

What a disingenuous take. Just because the OSI doesn't recognize the SSPL as open source doesn't mean it's not open source.

Edit: Everyone seems to believe I'm saying that because the source is available it should be open source. That's not what I'm saying at all.

JackbyDev ,

Regardless of whether it is too strong or too ambiguous, it is absolutely an open source license regardless of whether the OSI and/or FSF approve of it.

JackbyDev ,

SSPL doesn't carve out an exception, it just has clauses that are difficult for SaaS providers to meet.

JackbyDev ,

I don't believe we should let the OSI and FSF be the absolute final say in what people consider to be open source/free software.

The number one term of open source, greater than the availability of the source code, is the freedom to redistribute.

SSPL allows this.

JackbyDev ,

In what way does SSPL not allow free redistribution for users but does for developers? It requires the source to be made available just like AGPL.

JackbyDev ,

We had pretty much defined open source for the last 20+ years and one of the requirements is freedom of redistribution at least equal to the developer itself.

SSPL requires the source be made available for redistribution just like AGPL.

JackbyDev ,

Get angry at companies making them feel this is necessary instead

Wot The Fsck You Say, Spotify? ( lemmy.world )

Edit: A couple times I've said eBook while I actually meant Audiobook. I've learned that Spotify has a 15 hour limit per month for their free 'included in premium' audiobooks. However these are the two books I listened to for free, and even rounding up to 13 hours it doesn't make sense, unless they count accidental chapter skips...

I only use Brave if I need a Chrome based browser. Otherwise I use Firefox.

JackbyDev ,

I try to avoid Chromium based browsers as a rule because I don't like Google being the de facto standards group by controlling Chromium.

No, it's exhausting.

Gentle reminder to everyone that support for ends in about 90 weeks. Many computers can't upgrade to Win 11 so here are your options:

  1. Continue on Win 10 but with higher security risks.
  2. Buy new and expensive hardware that supports Win11.
  3. Try a beginner friendly distro like . It only takes about two months to acclimate.

@nixCraft @linux @windowscentralbot

JackbyDev ,

All my hardware is just slightly older than TPM and SecureBoot. It's from like 2009.

JackbyDev ,

I don't understand this post. Whatever you bought then for they're still good for. People's opinions don't make them less useful.
