qmmp does pretty well with the winamp skin, but it would be a treat to run the real winamp on linux

    One thing this means to me is that Blue Dwarf should remain a text-only site for the foreseeable future.

    i guess. but these are insights for any forum from the last, oh 30, years... if youre not talking federation, or even imaging... it doesnt feel like theres any 'new' information here. just a wall of text from yet-another-forum-operator.

    Do you use the device you torrent on for personal things as well?

    I'm just curious as I've permanently dedicated my laptop to torrenting. I've been too nervous to install anything but the VPN and Firefox on it. Now, I'm curious to mess around with Linux some more, which is what I use on it, but I can't fully test out what all I can do with it without signing into accounts....

    @originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

    not exactly. you use an old machine like that and run it headless... throw a bunch of containers on it..

    get yourself a gluetun and maybe deluge containers.. youll have a solid vpn connection, and a torrenting client that wont bleed to public. you can run all kinds of compartmentalized services fairly easily.

    they did this with the t-mobile sidekick... they bought the platform and all data outright... then 'oops! we lost all your end-user, cloud stored data, sorry! we were just too busy to do our jobs!'

    thanks, microsoft.

    Because I have this avalanche of hate, I really don't want to apologize in the face of that, because I don't want to encourage this behavior for the next guy who says the wrong word," said Edwards.

    yes, dont want to start that terrible trend of apologizing for your terrible actions or words.

    Besides lemmy, what's another good reddit alternative?

    Hi! Recently exiled reddit user, here. I'm curious what other alternatives to reddit there are, besides Lemmy, and Raddle, of course. Also, imho, Phuks is a good alternative, there's no hate-speech (that I'm aware of) and people are pretty respectful. Anyways, let's hear your suggestions! Thank you!

    i hate apps as well, but there is some efficiency gained in not having to manage the infrastructure required for 'cards'. its not always about the data mining.

    i have 'utility' device that is an old cell phone with no cellular access used for this kind of nonsense. i also use it for music (pseudo-ipod)

    Are there any innovative platforms in the Fediverse?

    I've explored a few platforms within the Fediverse, but most of them seem to be inspired by and mimic existing mainstream social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook. While this familiarity can be comforting, I can't help but wonder if there are any truly innovative and original platforms out there that offer a...

    i think this misses the point of the fediverse... we need to supplant those giant 3rd parties with something less corporate, more co-op.

    sure, we can extend functionality and do cool new things while thats happening, but that migration is a big part of the fediverse movement. it needs to be somewhat familiar to those users migrating.

    i feel like vr will have an actual purpose and general utility about the same time we bring those in-development fusion reactors online.

    until then its niche/entertainment only.

    What to be aware of before opening port 25 on a postfix Raspberry Pi?

    I have a raspberry pi running postfix. I Realised unless I open port 25 I absolutely cannot receive emails (I have 587 open and can send but not receive them). However I heard there are scaries online which someone could potentially send emails from your server without consent. I believe as well my ISP doesn't block port 25. Is...

    The need for a Fedi Union.

    tl;dr I propose a Fedi Union consisting of the developers of Phanpy, Pixelfed, Peertube, Lemmy, and PieFed. That will work as a way to fund all of the services collectively (with the option to still go to their individual patreons and fund them seperately) and as a way for them to communicate to help all the services be more...

    RAID setup for Ubuntu media server

    I recently acquired two used blade servers and a short rack to put them in. I'm planning to use one or the other as the replacement for a media server that died on me a bit ago. The old media server was just a little refurb dell workstation, with a single SSD in it, but the servers have 6 and 8 bays, respectively....

    originalucifer ,
    @originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

    you would want to use the hardware raid that likely already exists. its been a minute since i setup dell, but you should be able to boot into the raid controller bios (some ctrl-key sequence) and configure your raid there... then you just install whatever you want on the defined logical drives (linux/windows/hypervsior)

    originalucifer ,
    @originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

    i wouldnt on a non-jbod, retail server box. if this was a random workstation without onboard hardware raid, then sure.

    im not sure how you think sharing the main processor with the raid when there is already a perfectly good set of processors for the raid is going to be faster.

    originalucifer ,
    @originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

    what specific feature of ZFS are you frothing over to sacrifice your primary processing for it?

    the hardware raid in this box was designed for business and would be more than adequate for the requested purpose

    originalucifer ,
    @originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

    but this guy is specifically not using consumer hardware
