I don't really care about my TV being 4K, but I like the extra desktop space on my PC.

PC vendors are still selling laptops with 4GB RAM. 16GB should absolutely be the minimum (and should have been since 2020), but it's very much not true that anything with less than 16GB is over 8 years old.

The article links directly to HMD's website for the phones, where the specs say they only support GSM 800 and 1900.

Isn't this the service that was sending messages from the app to the servers over plain HTTP?

I think it's more of a politics thing, but I don't know of any politics communities (I'm sure they exist), so I wouldn't have seen this otherwise.

And it's actually news, unlike the dozens of posts people used to make linking to articles about Elon eating breakfast or something.

The Mail app looked great, but I would hardly call it perfect. It constantly failed to notify me of new emails or calendar events, and I know I'm not alone in that.

Project Treble and GSIs solve a lot of the intercompatibility issues. Of course, Treble doesn't help if your device wasn't originally Android, or came out before Treble existed.

I need to release an update to refresh the supported domains soon, but I made an app that does the work of maintaining the giant list of possible domains and helps you set it as the default for all of them.

Not every client is supported, but there are a few options.

Sync forgot about my Ultra purchase ( lemm.ee )

I paid for a lifetime purchase of Ultra back in April 2023 after Sync for Lemmy was released. Now suddenly Sync started showing me ads yesterday and asking if I want to buy Ultra. I have tried "Restore purchases" but it doesn't find anything. Has anyone else seen this or have any tricks to get it to remember I already paid?

wander1236 ,
@wander1236@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think you're looking at your Sync for Reddit purchase there. Sync for Lemmy was released August 2.

That's the great part, you don't!

It's location-based. If you leave the EU, your sideloaded apps stop working.

@wander1236@sh.itjust.works avatar

Your Apple ID has to have a European country set and the phone has to be physically in the EU. I don't think where you bought it matters.

wander1236 ,
@wander1236@sh.itjust.works avatar

If you tap the subscription option you originally purchased, Google will show an "already purchased" error and then Sync should recognize your Ultra status.

wander1236 ,
@wander1236@sh.itjust.works avatar

I'm not sure what's wrong with the restore button, but it's never worked for me.

    How is this at all related to technology?

    Can you use the same domain/username for different fediverse services?

    Is there a way to set it up so user@example.com can be a lemmy account and also a mastadon account? I seen people using subdomains like user@lemmy.example.com and user@mastadon.example.com is this nessasary? Could u also set up a matrix account with the same user@example.com? If not what woukd be requured to change to make this...

    Technically you sort of can do that with email. Most providers let you verify you own the other email and then use the other provider’s SMTP to send from a different address.

    News articles about Elon’s constant political clown shows aren’t technology-related just because he’s in charge of a few tech companies.

    News articles about a CEO being fired from a tech company and then almost immediately rehired are tech-related, because they’re about the tech company itself and the relevant actions of the people involved.

    If this were a story about the opinions of Sam Altman, who happens to be a CEO of a tech company, about world hunger or something, that would be comparable. But it’s an article about how a CEO, who happens to be Sam Altman, was fired and rehired from a tech company over the course of 3 days.

    There are still obviously personalities and opinions involved, but they’re in the context of technology, rather than technology being tangentially related to the context of someone’s opinions.

    Resuming from S3 is still a lot faster than cold booting or resuming from hibernation, even with SSDs and Fast Boot. It’s also nice for keeping your session intact so you don’t have to reopen programs and reload tabs.

    I really don’t like macOS “reopen” feature. It doesn’t seem to remember state for most apps, so if they were running at all before shutting down, they’re going to have a window opened on login. Unchecking the option doesn’t seem to work for every app, either. Whenever I reboot, I end up having to close 5 or more windows from apps I had running in the background without open windows.

    Modern Standby includes a Disconnected Standby mode. It never actually enters S3 sleep, because Windows assumes S0 sleep support means no S3 sleep support. Disconnected Standby might use a little less power than Connected Standby, but the computer is still subject to the same wakeups and wakelocks.

    I’m pretty sure they used 10 because 7 was build 7xxx, 8 was build 8xxx, and 8.1 was 9xxx, making at least the initial versions of 10 10xxx.

    Y’all really need to actually click the article and read the first sentence. This has nothing to do with Windows 12, and even Neowin has clarified that right at the top in an update.

    Microsoft is a bad company, but it’s a little worrying when someone can just say some random things in a title and have it be believed without question, just because it paints Microsoft in a negative light.

    The utility was more in being able to buy a dirt cheap Windows 7 Pro key or copy one from some old computer or disc label to activate a new computer on 10 or 11, and have it be legal.

    If you signed in with a Microsoft account, the key would also be synced to it and be able to activate a computer just by you signing in, which could be handy.

    New Anti-Consumer MacBook Pros - Teardown And Repair Assessment - Apple Silicon M1/M2 ( youtu.be )

    No surprises here. Just like the lockdown on iPhone screen and part replacements, Macbooks suffer from the same Apple’s anti-repair and anti-consumer bullshit. Battery glued, ssd soldered in and can’t even swap parts with other official parts. 6000$ laptop and you don’t even own it.

    On Intel Macs, Linux is pretty easy to install. A lot of people put a lot of work into having most Macs just work out of the box on Linux.

    On Apple Silicon, most of that work is still unfinished. Asahi Linux is the main project to get Linux on M1/M2, and the goal is to upstream everything, but it’s a long road.

    Either way, the sheer popularity of Macs basically guarantees a usable experience on Linux. It’s just going to take a bit for Apple Silicon to catch up.

    Also, I think “last forever” with Macs is more about the hardware itself. It’s hard to deny the build quality is really good (except the keyboard from 2016-2020 on MBPs), and I’ve seen people using 2011 MBAs stuck on Catalina as their daily drivers because the hardware just keeps working.

    The raw performance isn’t everything for me. I already have a gaming laptop that pumps out heat like a 1500W space heater even when it’s not doing anything. I really didn’t want that in a second laptop, especially with how bad my experience has been with Windows’ Connected Standby, where the laptop will just sometimes decide to fully wake up in a bag and overheat and drain the battery.

    There were a lot of reasons I went with a Mac for this, but one of the biggest ones was how efficient Apple Silicon is. The M2 Max may take an extra minute or two to compile a large project vs an i9-13900HX, but it also manages to not give me first degree burns if I want to use it on my lap.

    I have a lot of problems with Apple and their decisions around macOS and hardware pricing, but for me, that efficiency ratio was really important. I’m not trying to say everyone should buy a Mac, but if we’re “saying it like it is”, Apple Silicon is years ahead of Intel, AMD, and even Qualcomm for high performance portability. That trade-off might not be worth it to you, and that’s fine, but there’s literally no competition for what I needed.

    The fact of the matter is that the M2 Max rarely goes above 70C under load, even with Apple’s ridiculously conservative fan curve, while pretty much every x86 laptop I’ve owned idles right around there.
