Disclosure: I did not have any business myself.

Maybe it will be worth considering starting with spreadsheets? They are super super flexible and what have been done for years. You would have time to see what scope and needs you have for more dedicated and automated system down the road. Switching ERP software is very painful and time consuming, while importing spreadsheet to ERP is basic transition.

Self hosted open source simultaneous multiuser password safe with .deb or .rpm and an end user webui/android app

I'm looking into different self hosted open source multiuser password safes and while there are many options I haven't found one with a .deb or .rpm install - only a whole bunch of docker compose....

smileyhead ,

Vaultwarden is simpler to selfhost implementation of Bitwarden server fully compatible with it's apps.

ArchLinux have the server in official repos.

For Debian (.deb) I have found this unofficial repo: https://github.com/gvtulder/vaultwarden-deb
Be mindful it suggests stupid installation method by downloading and executing the install.sh script directly, you may want to read it yourself before install.

For .rpm I haven't find any repositories that are actively maintained, but you may have more luck.

I am from Mastodon / ActivityPub bubble. Can someone explain me the benefits of Bluesky / AT protocol?

smileyhead ,

So nothing to keep an eye on considering an overwhelming amount of cons of Bluesky.

Self hosted Wetransfer?

Hello, i am looking for a self hosted application for sharing files like with wetransfer. I have tried the discontinued Firefox Send which has nice features like link expiry and works great in general but lacks authentication (only offers simple password protection). I also want the option to share with registered users. Is...

Missing the days when developing a new browser was possible.

My music collection is still less than hundreds of GBs, so I give up doing my own streaming for now.

My setup is super simple, I just sync my Music folder by Syncthing app on all my devices.
To download on my Android phone I use NewPipe to find a song (in three-dots menu there is section specific to songs without videos) and share it to the Seal app. On computer I use yt-dlp command, but there are nice apps on Flathub too.
By this I do not need sophisticated automated system, only need to put file downloaded from YouTube, ripped from CD by abcd or pirated from torrent in Music folder and then it's synced.

This is because I found streaming apps using D-Sub or Subsonic protocols very clunky and just bearable, while custom ones like for Jellyfin are not available or the best on all platforms.

smileyhead ,

If Stract is any good, it would be nice combo to make it work in SearXNG.

New to Linux? Ubuntu Isn’t Your Only Option ( www.howtogeek.com )

Ubuntu's popularity often makes it the default choice for new Linux users. But there are tons of other Linux operating systems that deserve your attention. As such, I've highlighted some Ubuntu alternatives so you can choose based on your needs and requirements—because conformity is boring.

smileyhead ,

It's Arch Linux with preinstalled stuff right from the install.
I won't recommend it, you still would need a good amount of knowleadge first to drive an Arch based system.

Imagine a Windows modification with some gaming tools preinstalled and scripts for one-click install things that usuallu take five clicks. Great, but only to speed up things you do often.

smileyhead ,

SSH can do just that, example:

ssh -L 8080:localhost:8080 user@host

Do not enter very large rooms (especially Matrix HQ!) and you'll be fine.

I know it sounds extreme, but you may want to ban Matrix HQ from the start and just infrom anyone wanting to join your instance if they are ok with that.
This room alone is a spam anyway and it took >100GB of space on my database, cleaning wasn't simple.

Write me a message if you want any help 😊.

smileyhead ,

Native desktop version.

smileyhead ,

First being able to use the service first-class on the desktop without registering with phone app first.
Second is using native desktop technologies for the app, as Signal currently uses Electron so it is basically a website running in separate Chromium web browser without tabs.

smileyhead ,

Both are great for chat! End of debate.

smileyhead ,

RCS is still not available for Android. For now proprietary Google Messages is required to connect Google proxied RCS servers.

And I would be suprisied if this won't stay that way.

smileyhead ,

Signal wants to provide updates themselfs to make sure they are fast in case of big security bug. F-Droid can lag behind to provide new version of app.

But they should at least provide F-Droid repo.

smileyhead ,

So be it. I don't understand why there is so much debate around such simple setting.

Amazon clearly lying about "ownership" on Prime. ( lemmy.world )

You all remember just a few weeks ago when Sony ripped away a bunch of movies and TV shows people “owned”? This ad is on Amazon. You can’t “own” it on Prime. You can just access it until they lose the license. How can they get away with lying like this?

smileyhead ,

Imagine a book store in which you pay for a book, then the book stays on the shelf in their shop, but they have in database that you can rent it whenever you want from them.
How is this ownership?

smileyhead ,

Telling you have CDs collection of music is giving even more weird reactions.

smileyhead ,

It's like using a credit card to pay for a drink vs doing a gold transfer.

Taler is anonymous to payer where Bitcoin transations are public, not wasteful for electrical power (https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption), almost instant and currency agnostic. Taler could also do BTC payments too.

Alternative github frontends?

Github has become more bloated, slower and more user-hostile with each update (just like all other big corp platforms). SPA navigation slow like hell, the "new" file viewer/browser is hardly usable in my opinion, code search does not work without login, etc. So are there any good alternative FE where the following work (read...

smileyhead ,

Yes, I agree!

Who would want to enable cycling through application windows on the taskbar via graphical settings in KDE Plasma, when you can just press Win+R, enter regedit.exe, get administrator privilages, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced and add a new 32-bit DWORD named LastActiveClick with the value of 1 in Windows.

smileyhead ,

Notesnook is great. Not yet self-hostable (server is open source), but they are working on it.

smileyhead ,

Something like Wallabag, but modern and not only for article content? 😁

Honestly it looks cool. Also I so much love to see an open source app with fully managed straightforward paid hosting option!
Myself I am going to self-host it anyway as I have time to learn and manage my servers, but it is great when trying to recommend app for others or have an option if I get lazy.

Ugh, I hate all those people making some compromises to live a healthier lifestyle and are talking about their changes so maybe someone can do it too making the group larger and easier to live for everyone.
The worst ones.

smileyhead ,

I have learned much how the networking works, how programs are made and how computers do stuff.
And not because I had to with Linux, but it was actually fun to learn without the roadblocks.

smileyhead ,
smileyhead ,

Aaaand as always the problem is proprietary corpo software :).
People locked to this exists and there are not a few, but how is the OS to blame?

smileyhead , (edited )

Switching to Linux:
"I don't know how to do something"

Years after, being forced to use Windows:
"I cannot do something"

(Then someone join the conversation with Adobe or MS Office argument, but I am talking about OS vs OS)

smileyhead ,

Yep, this is one of the most common disadvantage of Linux ecosystem. Unless using something like Debian, but then comes (a little, but still existing) fragmentation.

My comment is about proprietary apps here. The biggest roadblockers with any change to next-gen technologies in the stack like Flatpak, Pipewire, Wayland, etc. are always them. Because with FOSS when someone create a new store or tech, they can be the ones doing ports of common apps, but with locked down software all he can do is please the original developers - the only ones able to do what they want with the program.

smileyhead ,

There unfortunetly is something to it, like shown by some game developers dropping Linux port when Proton got good enough and just officially supporting the game to work with Proton.

smileyhead ,

I have OnePlus 6T with Droidian and must say it is this close to daily drive for me.

Everything works and there are apps for almost everything I need. As someone who uses only FOSS social media and things, there is Mastodon and Matrix client, I just lack maps with navigation (can use Organic Maps via Waydroid).
Beyond that what is left is polish and tiny things, like for the performance or support for controlling media via buttons on bluetooth speaker.

I also tried PostmarketOS, that is adapting real Linux to phones (when Droidian is taking Linux kernel and drivers from Android and building on that). It is great if someone can get around lack of camera support etc., but for me now it can act like a second device or RPi alternative.

The ability to... you know, just use normal SSH and all the commands, Flatpak apps, all Pipewire tools, not fiddling with Android Studio and it's stupid SDK or customizing my UI with just CSS is magical.

Seriously, fuck Google and Qualcomm for creating such hostile drivers ecosystem. There are brands like Fairphone that I think would happly support Linux but can't because of Qualcomm only releasing their own vendor kernel prepared only for Android.

smileyhead ,

Droidian uses vendor's Linux/Android kernel and patch it a little, then uses binary-only drivers taken from Android through libhybris translation layer (something similiar to Wine or Box64).
It is the same tech that Ubuntu Touch uses, but Droidian gives you root access and uses normal desktop Linux stack (Flatpak, Pipewire, APT, etc.).
So yes, you do "sudo apt".

It is more of a mess than upstream-first PostmarketOS and the kernel do not get updates after manufacturer drop the device, but it works. On my OP6T everything hardware works (including day-long battery and reliable waking up on a call or alarm), but there is still a long list of things to polish.

Help with a simple and private phone

Hi everyone, I’m looking to possibly simply my smartphone setup. I would really love to keep it as a utility: phone, text, camera, GPS, web browser, notes, email, music player. Im think of switching to local NextCloud backup system as well. I currently have an iPhone but used to flash ROMs on Android phones, so I would be...

smileyhead ,

I think the route will be:

  • Switch to services that work across many systems
  • Switch to an Android phone that has support for CalyxOS/GrapheneOS/LineageOS/DivestOS (note that last two can be more or less polished depending on device)
  • Switch to open source apps on Android
  • Switch to open source ROM

This is to not get a total shock in amount of learning after which would get you immediatly back.

I can recommend some first of second hand Google Pixel devices, OnePlus up to 8T and Fairphone(s).

As far as I love the idea of mobile Linux like with Librem phone, right now you need to be very tech saavy and take many sacrifices above just switching services you use.

smileyhead ,

Nextcloud or Lufi if you want to upload, send a link and forget.

Magic Wormwole if you want to send while both computers are running.

Syncthing if you want to continously sync files on both machines.

So fast and satisfying to navigate around

Where did you learn partitioning? And do you need a guide everytime you install a distro?

I have been using linux about 4 years now and in that time i've done a bunch of installs. Lately i've been setting up luks and lvm, but each time i install a distro ive set up bodhi and nixos with this setup but the issue i have is that each time ive done it i've had to follow a guide....

smileyhead ,

You can use borgbackup with WSL, borg is great.

smileyhead ,

I wouldn't count ChromeOS just as we don't count Android.

smileyhead ,

I use Arch too, BTW.

smileyhead ,

If so, then why we cannot boot other Linux distributions on Chromebook devices and cannot run standard Linux apps/programs without using Crostini virtual machine?

Android just use Linux kernel, that was trawled by Google, then SoC manufacturer, then device maker.

ChromeOS is better, as it is based on Gentoo, but is incompatible with the rest of ecosystem and most devices do not have drivers for mainline Linux kernel.

If you don't believe me, look at the community effort to reverse-engineer some Chromebook laptops to run normal Linux distro on them:
https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices

Thus I think we should not mix them in statistics. It would be like mixing MacOS with FreeBSD...

smileyhead ,

And before locking check if the ROM boots at all!
Locking will wipe data anyway, so it's better safe than sorry as a button to allow unlocking is in the system settings.

smileyhead ,

Android already runs on 1 Billion devices which is basically Linux...

At which point? It takes only the Linux kernel. But kernel is the least important part from practical usage perspective.
Everything else is different, the bootloader (no GRUB or systemd-boot), screen compositor, sound system (not a Pipewire or PulseAudio), package format, init process, shell, even the standard C library (Bionic instead of glibc).

There are projects to run Linux on phones (see: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices), but it takes huge about of reverse engineering and work.
