Im pretty sure you can, afaik you can nest subvolumes

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

It’s more „outrageous” if it’s only Apple and makes you click :P

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Have you tried the „From docker hub” method?

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Sure I’ll help you out best I can. First, I assume you’re on Linux and know docker a bit. I don’t know you so just trying to see what we’re working with here :)

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Yeah, Ubuntu is fine, I run Ubuntu myself. From my experience, this is one of the painful containers to set up haha But okay let's roll with it. Personally, I did it with the "From GHCR/Docker Hub" option, and it took some tweaking. If you tried this option, where did you stop and what error did you get? Or do you want me to go step by step?

PS. For a more complete guide on homeserver, docker and stuff I recommend Smart Home Beginner. That's where I learned. You don't need his "Auto Traefik" stuff tho, so just ignore it

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Most likely some networking problem. I would need to know your exact setup to maybe know what’s going on

jaykay , (edited )
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

First see if you can ping the docker host to see if that’s reachable at all. Check what IP the ubuntu machine has and try and ping it from Win10. If we can do that we’ll troubleshoot further

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Oh no problem. Glad I could… help? Haha If you still want to explore this, buying a cheap NUC from eBay could work. I bought one for £50 and it worked fine, as long as I didn’t have to transcode jellyfin lol

Thinking of building a database of "stuff" that I have at home + some other family households. Multiple accounts with private and shared inventories.

The use case is basically so that all my family members we can check that "John has an old laptop collecting dust" or "Mary has this specific tool that I'd love to use for my current project"....

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

I’ve heard good things about grocy not sure if it fits your case

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

+1 for docker and minimal maintenance. Only updates or new containers might break stuff. If you don’t touch it, it will be fine. Of course there might be some container specific problems. Depends what you want to run. And I’m not a devops engineer like Max 😅

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

I think I’ve had a similar problem with a different container. After restarting the browser, does it work if you authenticate another app?

How do you handle your passwords?

I rely on Bitwarden (slooowly migrating from... a spreadsheet...) and am thinking of keeping a master backup to be SyncThing-synchronized across all my devices, but I'm not sure of how to secure the SyncThing-synchronized files' local access if any one of my Windows or Android units got stolen and somehow cracked into or...

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Im not sure if that’s what you mean but I just export the Bitwarden database in an encrypted json and have it backed up in cloud. I’m not sure why you need the backup synced with all devices tho

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Oh, that changes things. So, Bitwarden can be used basically anywhere, as you said. Just log in and there you are. It’s even a website. They’re servers would have to die for it to be a problem. But that’s not a real problem actually as the app keeps a local copy on the device and every time you open the app, it syncs with their servers and updates the vault (database). So the devices are synced by default really. If you want to back it up anyway, there is a „export vault” button which you can use. If you choose with encryption it’s going to be encrypted with the master password I think :)

PS Bitwarden (company) stores only the encrypted version on their servers so that’s not an issue either

Soundux comes to mind but it’s not tofi :/

@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

You mention pactl so I’m not sure if you’re using pipewire, but if you are there is qpwgraph or helvum you could try

jaykay OP ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

True, but we can still try

jaykay OP ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

They could keep the servers up, or open source them so people can host the servers themselves

jaykay OP ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Maybe, but it’s also possible they will check if the name matches the postcode

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar
  1. A bug
  2. You’ll get banned
  3. They just announced it and didn’t implement it for you specifically . AB testing or something

One of those probably

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Ikr! It’s so good that I’m thinking of trying geruda. Maybe just for the logo alone lmao

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

We need to wait for the next version, 12 or wherever. Every other Windows version is “good”

Best resources to learn more about networking

I have been exploring the world of home servers/self-hosting for a little over a year now, and feel like I have at a decent understanding of a lot of things that go into this. The one thing I am not remotely comfortable with yet is networking. It's like a foreign language to me....

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Computer Networking: Top down approach book is awesome honestly

Comments no longer visible with youtube frontends?

Are comments no longer visible for anyone else using the youtube frontends? I can no longer see comments with either invidious, piped, or viewtube, and I've tried several instances of each. With invidious there's just nothing there below the video description. With viewtube I get an error message. And with piped I see...

Plus, it’s more likely you’ll find music you want on YouTube than Spotify or wherever since the author just needs to upload a video

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Actually true, Apple TV shows are awesome. They’re just not as mainstream as Netflix shows

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

No search function (at least on mobile), so you have to go through the whole page and read everything to find something. There is no “alternative to” text. How should I know if some software can replace something? Page links at the bottom of the website?

I nearly started typing a name of software in the newsletter box to search. Didn’t even notice it’s a sign up thing

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Awesome work! But can we please normalise describing the software IN the post? From the post alone I have no idea what Stash is

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Wouldn’t FileBrowser work? Idk if you’re on docker or not though

Linux desktop appreciation post

I recently had to use windows for stuff and after a year of using Linux, it made me realise how janky windows is in comparison. Even on a top spec pc unminimized (or resized) windows flash white before their contents appear. Super-d to minimize/maximize doesn't bring all windows back up or in the same order. And these are...

First day on the internet?

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

I recently went on instagram and Facebook, holy moly do people share a lot. Who the hell cares where you’ve been or had for breakfast

jaykay OP ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Yeah it’s the same. Apple Music is fine, it’s not a problem, I just thought I’d self host it :)

jaykay OP ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

It’s not about “using an underdog”, I just like “do one thing and do it well” philosophy you know. I don’t need drives, calendars, vpn, password manager, in one thing. I want a simple email provider that’s it.

Yeah skiff wasn’t like that but it seemed not too push it as much, just “hey it’s there you can use it” not full on products. Maybe I’m just being stupid about it idk

jaykay OP ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

True… People also recommend having your own domain so I can switch easily in the future. Having my surname seems a bit… un-privacy-like lol Any recommendations for that?

jaykay ,
@jaykay@lemmy.zip avatar

Yeah, “ease of use” wasn’t the best argument, the rest still stands though. I shouldn’t have brought it up. I myself hate the UI a lot. Don’t care what they add, change the UI
