it shows "Dec 16, 1" when I open the link, but the first time I saw someone post it, the date on the screenshot said "May 16, 2024 - 08:30 CEST": https://social.treehouse.systems/@amie/112452636130622939

SteamOS is based on Arch, which you do not want to use and maintain as a beginner. what matter is the desktop environment, which in SteamOS' case is KDE Plasma, a great choice in my completely unbiased opinion.

noodlejetski ,

it's not private, and could technically read and collect messages sent via e2ee services, FYI.

noodlejetski ,

whoa, did someone finally show them that Linus clip?!

noodlejetski ,

it used to be on F-droid (not sure if on the default repo or Izzy's), but it appears it's been removed.

noodlejetski ,

who you see as the top two

  1. Chrome, Chrome but Microsoft, Chrome but crypto and homophobic CEO, Chrome but with makeup on
  2. Firefox, Firefox but no Mozilla, Firefox but TOR, Firefox but Mullvad

noodlejetski ,

Is it good

no.

noodlejetski ,

I'm currently stuck using DuckDuckGo myself, just with the AI fluff disabled in settings. I've tried various other search engines but they're either also buying in the LLM hype, or are just Not There Yet™ (https://stract.com, for example), or both.

noodlejetski ,

I do have an account (and PixelDroid installed on my phone), but most of the accounts I'd follow there I've already got added to my Mastodon, so I don't check it that often.

Are there any innovative platforms in the Fediverse?

I've explored a few platforms within the Fediverse, but most of them seem to be inspired by and mimic existing mainstream social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook. While this familiarity can be comforting, I can't help but wonder if there are any truly innovative and original platforms out there that offer a...

many ISPs over here offer a ~5-10% discount on monthly bills if you agree to have your traffic analysed for marketing purposes. the last time I signed a contract I had to explicitly opt out of that. the ISP providing internet to all of my landlord's flats offers a similar deal when signing a contract, and 1. I'm willing to bet that my landlord has opted in, and 2. I have no way of opting out of that for my flat. I think I'll stick with a VPN for the foreseeable future.

from the ISP likely to analyze my traffic to a VPN provider who didn't provide any data after being raided by the police because they didn't store any

noodlejetski OP ,

I think if a CEO repeatedly ignored my boundaries and pushed their agenda on me I would not be able to keep the same amount of distance from the subject to make such a measured blog post

well, it's the other way around. the blog post was first, then Vlad contacted them, then the thread was posted.

noodlejetski OP ,
noodlejetski ,

the CEO sealioning after the author asked them not to contact them anymore is a bit icky, too.

Wtf is wrong with someone sending you emails to an email you decided to make public

there's nothing wrong with that. continuously messaging someone after being told more than once that the recipient doesn't want to continue the conversation, though? that's not okay.

noodlejetski ,

it's very likely that Cory didn't have enough time to do research, visit the company's Discord, and so on.

noodlejetski ,

when it's listed as one of the company's official communication channels with the owner of the company frequently participating, then I sure as hell am going to judge the company by it.

noodlejetski ,

that article

it's a post on a personal blog of a person on the internet. a blog post. not an article.

I dunno, emulating such company's device so that other people can play games without buying said device sounds like a pretty rad idea to me.

noodlejetski ,

the messages aren't end-to-end encrypted, so there's nothing stopping them from viewing them at their leisure.

noodlejetski ,

the goal is probably the opposite of that, given that they're introducing a subscription service

Standard notes: what about don’t put all your eggs in one basket rule?

If the owner of the standard notes will now be a proton, doesn't that contradict this principle? I have a proton email account but I don't want it linked to my standard notes account. I don't strongly trust companies that offer packaged services like google or Microsoft....

noodlejetski ,

I just wish any of them had a native Android UI instead of a weird, janky mess that is Logseq and iOS clone in Obsidian.

noodlejetski ,

I mean yeah, I get it, and I know the same's the reason behind everyone and their dog using Electron, but in both cases the result is... not great.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

noodlejetski OP ,

given that they struck a deal with OpenAI and Midjourney to train them on Tumblr data, I'd be wary of using their stuff.

noodlejetski OP ,

FYI, e2ee messages like Signal's and Whatsapp's are decrypted on Beeper's server before they get reencrypted and forwarded to the recipient.

also, Whatsapp and Signal might log you out if you don't use their client for certain time.

noodlejetski OP ,

yes, it's been added in a version that has only come out of beta today, if I'm reading their blog post correctly.

noodlejetski OP ,

they've automatically opted Tumblr accounts into training LLMs, so... not great

noodlejetski OP ,

it's not a "clone", it's literally using Matrix protocol with their own servers.

noodlejetski OP ,

not really, it's the same Matrix protocol as other Matrix instances use. the only difference is that they set up bridges and manage them on behalf of the users (something that's possible when hosting your own Matrix instance, too).
