Multi-boot utility Ventoy updated to 1.0.98 - Fixes for Arch Linux, KAOS, RHEL9 ( github.com )

Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drives for ISO/IMG/VHD(x)/WIM/EFI files. With Ventoy, you don't need to format the disk over and over, you just need to copy the disk images to the USB drive and boot them directly. You can have multiple images on the disk and Ventoy will give you a boot menu to select them....

Personally use Ventoy for non-Linux ISOs (ie: Windows), and everything else Linux-y I install through the netboot.xyz ISO image with Ventoy. I rarely need to update my USB stick that way, and most systems I have to deal with have access to the Internet.

If you clearly define your needs, it won't be hard to figure out which version you'll want. Then you don't really have to manage those office installations as long as you have enough licenses in the pool.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, you'll likely want to have something to centrally manage these computers, so something like Intune + EntraID to deploy softwares, manage the user account, etc will be an added cost.

Are there any WYSIWYG html editors? just curious

You can even use Markdown file and convert it dynamically to HTML using javascript through Markdeep by just dropping

<!-- Markdeep: --><style class="fallback">body{visibility:hidden;white-space:pre;font-family:monospace}</style><script src="markdeep.min.js"></script><script src="https://casual-effects.com/markdeep/latest/markdeep.min.js?"></script><script>window.alreadyProcessedMarkdeep||(document.body.style.visibility="visible")</script>

at the end of the markdown file. It makes it dead simple to update using a text editor later on and to host on a static website.

I don't think there's anything on the market that checks all the boxes for a $140 budget.

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

Not sure where you're shopping, but I can't find it below $200 for 16GB of RAM.

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

At that price point not really, and there is definitely going to be some tradeoffs required between power vs consumption vs price.

Why every TOTP app default uses SHA-1 hash encryption?

I use Aegis as my 2fa. Today on new token creation I observed that there's hash function set to SHA-1, later checked all my tokens and the result is same type of encryption used for all. So I have edited all my tokens to SHA-256 as a result my totp doesn't authenticate. Do I have to rescan my tokens for updating to SHA-256 or...

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

And some TOTP apps don't interpret the algorithm parameter correctly, which makes it safer to go with the default SHA-1.

Lemmy in fact was using SHA-256 for its earlier TOTP implementation and reverted back to SHA-1 since some people locked themselves out due to poor support in some TOTP app (among other issues, another was that the activation workflow never asked you to confirm the code you enrolled was working and generating the correct code...).

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? ( slrpnk.net )

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up....

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

I'd like to see that happen, especially if it comes with the following options to restrict the poll:

  • by time
  • by instance
  • by existing users at the time of the poll's creation
  • single choice, multiple choices, ranked choice

I'll wait for the GOG release, I have Control there already.

The MTP protocol is notoriously slow, as it will not multiplex block operations unlike traditional filesystems. It will not be able to process multiple files in parallel or asynchronously, which means the software can only check one file at a time.

So Filelight can probably handle it, but it will be highly inefficient and that would explain why the software appears frozen.

mp3 , (edited )
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

I don't think you can fix that, it's how MTP was designed.

Something on-device would have direct access to the filesystem, or at least the abstraction wouldn't be as slow as MTP.

Something like disky could do?

For my server I simply switched to Debian and add the packages I need on top, without all that proprietary snap crap.

For desktop I'm tempted to switch to an atomic distro like Fedora Silverblue (Gnome) or Fedora Onyx (Budgie), and for the Steam Deck I'd go with Bazzite.

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

I use it once in a while when I'm taking a walk, it's made purposely to fill stuff easily on the go.

For more detailed/complex edits, I go with Every Door.

Using passkeys on Linux & Android

Passkeys seem like a great idea, and we are at a point where, although things are still very much in flux, software passkeys managed by password managers are starting to be usable. I thought I'd share the workflow that's working for me on Linux with some sites, and ask the community for more tips & tricks....

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

* "Passkey" seems to be an umbrella term for WebAuthn or FIDO U2F. It looks like WebAuthn is a part of FIDO2.

In fact, Passkeys are considered passwordless, and rely specifically on discoverable credentials and resident keys to store the identity alongside the certificate for the authentication.

U2F is the previous standard, also known as FIDO. WebAuthn is basically another name for Passkeys, relying on CTAP2 as the protocol to interface between the website and the authentication token.

What's the point of paying for early access if need to pay again when it's stable?

Early access users took a gamble of paying a low price for a likely buggy game, that might evolve over time through user's feedback and that has a possibility of failing and never come out of early access.

Asking for the early access users to buy the game at full price is a slap on the face.

Syncthing-fork has a couple of mobile-specific enhancements, like only sync on a schedule, never on mobile data, etc.

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

My version of Syncthing-Fork is currently at 1.27.6, same as the official version.

I wouldn't be surprised if it lags behind for a day or two for the changes to be merged, but most if not all of it is specific to the Android wrapper, not the Syncthing core.

mp3 , (edited )
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

One trick is that you can enroll your TOTP codes on more than one device, the only thing the device need is the clock to be synced to provide the correct code.

You can store your TOTP codes in many places:

  • A mobile app like Aegis (Android) or 2FAS (Android, iOS). Those even offer a way of backing up your TOTP codes, but you need to take the proper measure to store them safely.
  • A password manager that can handle TOTP like Bitwarden (with a premium subcription) or KeePassXC.
  • A security key like the Yubikey 5 can safely store TOTP keys (up to 32) and generate them through the Yubikey Authenticator app.

That way you don't get caught your pants down if one of your device dies, get stolen, etc.
Also, keep the recovery keys / backup keys in a safe place just in case of a worst case scenario.

Keep in mind that your TOTP backup and Password Manager files like KeePassXC can be the weakest link in your OPsec if you're not careful.

@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

A strong and unique passphrase is indeed really important here, but you need to keep in mind that once the kdbx file is in the attacker's hand, that's the only thing that keep them out.

There's no 2FA, and no throttling on the bruteforce process. So it's really important to use a strong password there to avoid it being the weakest link.

I would suggest to look at the models supported by Gadgetbridge and pick one from there. I know I can trust Gadgetbridge not to leak my data since it doesn't ask for network permission.

https://gadgetbridge.org/gadgets/

I used it for several years, through multiple gadgets (in chronological order)

  • Pebble
  • Pebble Steel
  • Pebble Time Steel
  • Mi Band 4
  • Amazfit Bip
  • Bangle JS2
  • Casio GBD-200
mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

Initially the software wasn't very stable, but that was fixed over time. Overall I liked it a lot, and the available "apps" for it all filled a niche I looked for.

I switched because I wanted to go back to a more classic watch I can simply wear and forget about. I don't have all the bells and whistles from the BangleJS2, but now I have a watch to see my notifications and step counter that I don't need to recharge every week, the battery (CR2032) is said to last about 2 years in the GBD-200.

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

I more dissapointed that Pebble was unable to find a viable financial path forward :(

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

Depends how it's implemented, my bluetooth "smartwatch" runs for around 2 years on a single CR2032.

Isn't RISC-V their focus? I don't see them picking an Intel chip whatsoever.

Who am I posting/commenting as?

I'm writing this from the post page. Nothing here tells me who I'm signed in as. Same thing for comments. If I want to find out that answer, I have to back out all the way to the timeline. I wish when I was making additive actions like posting and commenting that I could see which account I have selected. "Posting as ..." Or...

I set different theme colors per account, makes it easier to know which account I'm using at all time.

Other browsers can still point to the settings panel (ms-settings:defaultapps) where you see your default program association, you just need to change it yourself.

This is a good change security-wise.

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

Not necessary, the browser can offer you to change it and link to ms-settings:defaultapps to get the user at the exact menu where they can make the change.

They target the most common denominator. Once EVs are everywhere, look at the chargers getting filled with ads.

mp3 ,
@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

Fast charging is constantly improving though, I wouldn't be surprised if we reach a point where EV charging improves to a point where it takes roughly the same time as charging an ICE vehicle in the 2030s.
