I've always thought of it this way: permissive licenses ensure freedom for developers. Copyleft licenses ensure freedom for end-users.

I feel it's time to upgrade when the latest and greatest just released again.

Thanks for telling us about Redlib!

To circumvent rate limits imposed by Reddit, OAuth token spoofing is used to mimick the most common iOS and Android clients.

This way, it won't suffer the same fate as Teddit and Libreddit. Of course, there's also rdx.overdevs.com.

Jobs, who once famously characterized death as “likely the greatest invention of existence,” left this world with a lasting gaze at his loved ones and a simple, yet enigmatic remark: “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.”

Saved you a click.

Ah, I remember Zorin. It was my first distro. I eventually moved on to Debian and Trisquel, though.

This is an excellent starting point for new converts, but if you want a more "Windows-esque" experience, I'd recommend Kubuntu or KDE Neon (Plasma is the most Windows-like DE in my opinion).

Trisquel GNU/Linux is an Ubuntu fork that is famous for having no proprietary software whatsoever*. It's the distro that Richard Stallman uses.

Trisquel uses a modified version of the Linux kernel that is completely devoid of binary blobs. However, as a side effect, some things like WiFi may not work, so you'll have to buy an FSF-certified USB dongle, or use Ethernet.

*Of course, there's nothing stopping you from installing closed-source software on Trisquel (but why would you want to do that?). And Debian by default ships with 100% FLOSS.

And no one ever pirated a Nintendo game ever again.

In other news:

  • Switch sales up 2000%!
  • Nintendo stock reaches all-time high!
  • Half-Life 3 released!

Btw, "cryptobro" is a sexist term that excludes women.

We can start calling them "cryptoclowns".

Looking for a REALLY simple video editor for win10, nothing fancy please! [E: already solved. Amazing, thanks!] ( kbin.social )

Windows Movie Maker used to be good enough, but for a while now it won't load mp4's anymore and I can't be bothered to try and fix it, and I'm really hating the online editors I've tried, so it's time to download some software!...

OpenShot may be the closest equivalent I can think of to WMM. Either that or Kdenlive (which can be pretty complex).

I agree. The Breeze theme is so good that I've never felt the need to customize Plasma.

It's also better than H.265/HEVC. Plus, it's open-source and royalty free.

    Was.

Some people STILL haven't gotten their Librem phones after 5 years, and the few that have weren't impressed by the phone's quality, both on the hardware and software side. Purism has also refused to hand out refunds, and the CEO has been acting suspicious.

Right now, you'd be better off buying a Google Pixel and installing GrapheneOS.

I feel like you shouldn't be advertising online that you're uploading large quantities of pirated media? Just kinda seems like common sense? Some of you guys are very trusting lol.

Hey, I clearly stated that I was uploading Linux ISOs and research papers! I never said anything about pirated media!

In all seriousness though, in hindsight I probably should have used an alt account to post this. If my home instance becomes compromised, I could end up in hot water...

Warner Bros. Wants Tumblr to Identify Beetlejuice 2 ‘Leaker’ ( torrentfreak.com )

The image, which has since been removed, doesn’t give away too much. However. Warner Bros. is clearly alarmed by the leak. The movie studio has a history of cracking down on the unauthorized distribution of leaked material and this is no exception.

I doubt this is fully "free" like the X200, but this is still a major improvement. If anything, at least it won't have Intel ME built-in.

I haven’t used it, but it is available for Debian/Fedora, despite being proprietary.

And you have to pay for it.

GNU/Linux is the more technically accurate term, but in practice, most people say “Linux” so that others know what they’re talking about.

And the reason for Tux is because Linus Torvalds was once bitten by a penguin.

There was once a time where I thought living with apps from only F-Droid was impossible.

Now, F-Droid is my only app store, and I only use Aurora Store for banking apps (and even then, I prefer to do banking on desktop).

It’s more of an alternative to Microsoft Office, but it is mostly considered THE open source office suite for GNU/Linux.

For something cloud-based, you may want to consider OnlyOffice. I’ve never used it, so I can’t say how good it is.

Is privacy possible with smart TV?

I’d like to start a discussion about TV privacy in 2023. I’ve never been interested in having a TV, but recently I was thinking of getting one. Looking into it, the privacy implications seem horrible. All the major brands seem to have cameras, microphones, and content recognition software. I can’t believe how dystopian it...

I’ve said this before on Lemmy, but you may want to consider getting a projector instead. They (usually) don’t have any smart-capabilities or Internet connectivity, and with the right setup, the screen size can be bigger than even the biggest consumer TV on the market.

The cons are that you need to be in a dark room, and if you want a really good projector (which you will), it’ll be just as expensive, or even more expensive than buying a TV. Also projectors don’t have OLED.

One of the Four Essential Freedoms includes the freedom to run the program for any purpose, even nefarious purposes, unfortunately. This license is well-intentioned, but isn’t a free software license.

    TheImpressiveX OP ,

Here’s some more excerpts from the book that I found amusing:

As you learned in Chapter 1, Linux is an open source operating system, meaning that anyone can download and modify it. Open source operating systems can benefit from improvements contributed by thousands of programmers. Some people choose open source operating systems out of an anti-establishment spirit; others choose them as a practical matter because they are free.

“Anti-establishment” isn’t the word I’d use, but I guess that fits.

One of the most popular distros for casual users, Ubuntu, comes with a DE called Unity (shown in Figure 5-16)

That hasn’t been true since 2017.

Be suspicious of free apps. In the best-case scenario, the app does what it says but installs ads or other software. In the worst-case scenario, the free app is, or contains, malware that might steal personal information from your device, encrypt your data files and demand a ransom for decryption, or monitor your device usage. Installing an app sometimes asks for specific permissions that the app will use. Be selective in allowing app privileges to items such as contact lists, GPS location, e-mail messages, and so on.

Okay, I’ll admit this is good advice if we’re talking about “freeware”, but there’s also free/libre/open-source software, which has all of the benefits of freeware, and also gives you the freedom to read/mofify/share the source code, if you wish.

As for that “malware” you speak of, you might as well be describing Google Chrome.

No media player supports all formats, so it’s important to find one that supports the formats of the clips you want to play.

Clearly, these people haven’t heard of VLC.

    Codec is short for “compressor-decompressor”

    It actually stands for “coder/decoder”.

    And that’s just one page…
