I'm sure Nvidia will become stable on wayland by the time xfce also migrates lol

Linux Mint if you're unsure

Fedora if you're brave and want the full Toolbox

Please not Ubuntu. It has enough of its own issues that it originally turned me away from Linux.

Oh and KDE for the desktop environment if you want great out of box windows like UI if you go with Fedora. Mint comes with cinnamon which is also pretty good. xfce if you want to run linux on a potato.

I don't know why but this gave me the idea of running meterpreter locally lmao

I feel like this video exposes the restrictions of both desktop environments compared to already completed solutions like KDE, XFCE, and Compiz which can all be configured to be 1:1 with Mac or 1:1 with Windows.

I can personally say going from windows to stock GNOME on both Ubuntu and Fedora was definitely not a nice experience at all.

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

I meant in the sense of the UI lol.

Gnome and kde are both way ahead in that they offer a proper app library and integration with devices.

Xfce is just a bunch of apps stuck together that happen to be good enough on their own, but aren't really interconnected.

I mentioned compiz because iirc it was one of the first compositors to outshine all the fancy window effects and behavior of Mac and Windows and still be configurable for both. Things like app switchers, snap windows, workspaces, etc. It just feels more intuitive to use than stock gnome.

I currently use an unholy combination of xfce with compiz, but once xfce upgrades to Wayland, I'll probably get Wayfire to replace compiz.

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

HDR is only experimental on gnome and kde with weston not having an implementation.

I think 10 bit color depth hasn't even been worked on much.

VRR I think is about finished although X11 has it too.

And the Nvidia wayland support is slowly improving although still full of bugs and stability issues.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I'm working on a some materials for a class wherein I'll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we're including a section we're calling "foot guns". Basically it's ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

Interesting (and poorly paraphrased) story about a successful Linux migration:

spoiler

Several years ago someone made a post or cross-posted on r/sysadmin where OP (lead sysadmin) was in meeting with management and they complained about windows and the licensing costs.

OP jokingly passed a comment about switching to Linux and management actually thought he was throwing out a real idea.

Upon explaining the much lower cost due to FOSS and maybe only requiring a small contract for consulting/support, management actually agreed to his idea.

He successfully transitioned the entire company to OpenSUSE which he determined was the best enterprise distro for desktop use.

The other important part was how he handled the transition. iirc he got it going by first offering it to tech savvy departments who were ecstatic to get new stuff, so he lined it up with a hardware upgrade.

Naturally the rest of the departments heard about it and also wanted the new stuff which locked them into using Linux.

There were several holdouts clinging to Windows, but with the majority showing success, management forced them to change as well.

For his use case, most of the employees were using web apps, so almost no additional desktop apps were required.

Lol I still have the CDs that came with my first built PC parts just to install the drivers because windows would never use the correct one even when the OEM had them very easily online.

Have a complete CD for my monitor, GTX 750ti, and motherboard. Actually had to use mobo CD to get ethernet working (killer ethernet e2400) and I think I might have used nvidia CD or just gone straight to GeForce download.

I can't believe I can actually say linux has had a working kernel module since at least 2013 but Windows 10 didn't

Had similar issues where card would just randomly disconnect, although for some reason never when it was under load.

Even followed the Arch wiki and tried some alternative driver modules with no luck

Luckily it was a desktop so I eventually just switched to ethernet

We did. RCS was made over a decade ago by mobile phone OEMs

Except now that everything runs Android and theres so few OEMs left, Google gets to dictate a ton of stupid requirements even though it's open source and runs off the Linux kernel.

They already paid Samsung to remove RCS from their messages app so that google messages would be the only major app with support.

Incidentally, it runs like complete garbage compared to even the OEM SMS apps of Android jellybean.

So when they go around making a hissy fit about imessage, I really don't care because I can't even use RCS without using their shitty gapp.

The current alternative is a data based app like signal.

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

It used to, it no longer does because Google paid or convinced Samsung to remove RCS and make Google Messages the default.

Or in the USA, they run a 24/7 marketing campaign advertising minimmum wages and education in exchange for "chilling" 6 years in the infantry with no post service trauma or health issues whatsoever.

Stop using GNOME as de facto default standard. Fr I despise this crap

I seriously don't understand how anyone from windows is going to find stock GNOME even remotely intuitive or useful.

What kind of sick bastard thought "Yeah you know what, people don't need minimize and expand buttons."

And then on top of that, they put in the most basic default modern android chromeos looking shell/menu as if this is some mobile OS that runs all its apps on the JVM and that everyone knows trackpad kung fu.

For such a "simple" desktop, it eats through ram like it's KDE with all the fancy animations enabled.

Frickin Compiz solved the problem of performance and features over a decade ago. Use the god damn thing. If you need wayland, then at least KDE please.

If you're coming from Mac, only then will GNOME feel somewhat familiar because of the shell. Otherwise, please just make the download either an ISO with several DEs or a menu to select the DE first. Or at the very least, make a better default GNOME setup.

Also what illegal subscriptions. Do they really think people pirate content for it to be sold and not shared?

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Not for every average Hollywood movie ever.

There's so many acronyms for the source because of how many people independently rip, not even including cam rips.

Now if it's some big gun software like cobalt strike, then sure yeah people definitely charge.

But Movie and TV pirating is so easy, people regularly make their own rips and torrents.

What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it's 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you're about to execute... And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

fstab bind mount for /home that I misspelled, so I couldn't login as myself.

fstab external hdd mount that didn't have ignore flag so PC would pop if I booted while unplugged

Accidentally booting windows after a year and it overwrite my EFI boot entry.

The best I've see however was an acquaintance who accidentally set perms to own user on /usr/bin

So everything went from root:root to user:user which removed all the SUID/SGID bits as well so a bunch of bins broke lol.

Believe it or not, it was actually fairly easy to fix with chmod and chown

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Meh nah because it uses docker or podman as backend which is like how netplan uses several backends which plug into more backends.

Big and advance programs tend to break or lose performance because of the yet another added layer of config.

Linux comes with LXC which works out of box, yet everyone is always running to make another useless container layer because they all want their own config management standard.

LXD, Docker, Podman, Toolbox, etc. God forbid you try to run more than one of these at the same time.

Moreover, Flatpak solves this issue by acting as a pseudo container which at the very least removes potential performance loss.

spoiler

Immutable machines and containerized software are for losers who don't know how to run git clone && make in a terminal /s

XFCE with Compiz as the compositor

Or just straight Compiz

Make sure you enable all the funny effects like the cube, cube animations, 3D windows, advanced window animations, transparency effects, sky box, etc.

All easy to do with compiz config manager.

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I'm surprised it doesn't show up as much anymore despite being both a performant and highly customizable platform.

Lots of the effects aren't available on other DEs, and the team behind has so far actually maintained all the plugins.

Canonical's Steam Snap is Causing Headaches for Valve ( www.omgubuntu.co.uk )

Timothée Besset, a software engineer who works on the Steam client for Valve, took to Mastodon this week to reveal: “Valve is seeing an increasing number of bug reports for issues caused by Canonical’s repackaging of the Steam client through snap”....

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

I'm really hoping this all forces Ubuntu out as the face of desktop Linux.

It's been pretty low tier for years now, and Canonical just proves corporate backing doesn't guarantee a good distro.

Snap is pretty garbage, default GNOME is horrendous, the repos break every other month, apt is still pretty lame despite being an user upgrade for apt-get, the packages are neither stable nor cutting edge, they change core OS backends like every update which breaks configs and makes documentation obsolete.

I'd like to suggest Fedora as the new goto, but I feel like it's a bit too privacy and FOSS oriented which may scare away new users.

Debian is great but it doesn't have latest packages which isn't optimal as performance upgrades would take time to release or need to be manually installed.

Google touting RCS like it's some big new thing as if it isn't some outdated as hell unencrypted protocol and defnitley has nothing to do with the fact that they have been sitting on their ass not even trying to make a new system all while blaming apple.

God what a mouthful

If it ain't open source E2E, then shut up and sit down.

Google messages as an app can also screw off. Pictochat from the DS had a more usable and nicer looking UI.

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

E2E on RCS is not a described standard. This is a google addon that requires the use of data/WiFi to function, and is exclusive to the Google Messages App because Samsung torpedoed their own app last year, leaving Google as the only E2E "provider"

spoiler

Functionally, it's not even straight RCS because it bypasses the protocol limitations by using wifi anyway.

At that point, it would be equivalent to using Signal or Whatsapp since they don't run on GSMA either.

To be fair though, I guess this is also partially GSMA's fault for not properly creating a guideline for an updated standard or version.

Nvidia on Wayland moment

Gaming on wayland moment

Battery/Usage on wayland moment

KDE devs making gestures only available on wayland because memes (there is literally a 3rd party github script to achieve the same thing on X11)

X11 being reliable because Xorg devs aren't stupid

My real issue with Wayland is that it took like 15 years to become acceptably usable. I'll switch once XFCE moves over in several years, but until then, there is no incentive for worse performance and non exitestent support.

@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Use a VM and play with different DEs

Fedora is a good base and comes with most DEs as spins so you don’t have to swap live.

Choose the one you like the most.

Personally, XFCE for all around customization amd performance, KDE for out of box solid functionality (and wayland if you care).

Once you feel comfortable, then go ahead and install or dual boot.

Silverblue is okay but kinda overrated because Flatpaks are not a silver bullet and will break or have basic FS dependency issues. Plus, it’s not a great intro to Linux experience because you can’t shoot yourself in the foot easily most tutorials on Linux will be for a regular system.

As for the distros themselves:

spoilerArch: Bleeding edge and you want to actually suffer every time you boot. Manjaro: Arch but supposed to work out of box. Debian: The King of stability at the cost of slower package updates Fedora: Cutting edge and works out of box unlike Arch Ubuntu: Useless Canonical distro that is heavily dated Pop! OS and ElementaryOS: user friendly downstream of Ubuntu that suffer the same issues as Ubuntu. Linux Mint: Ubuntu if it was actually good except it’s still a downstream so still has aforementioned Ubuntu issues. Gentoo: You want something completely custom Slackware: You want a classic Unix like machine but with Linux RHEL/CentOS/Rocky/Oracle/Etc: Enterprise Linux (server usage and desktop usage) OpenSUSE: The RPM equivalent of Arch & Debian (comes in rolling and stable releases). So you can choose bleeding edge or stability.

Personally, I have stuck with Fedora for a long time. Debian or OpenSUSE would be second choice. Arch only if I’m forced to like the steam deck lol.

Also ArchWiki is your friend. Even if you’re on any other distro, it has a wealth of the latest information and tutorials for whatever you want or need.

Wayland on its way to wreck everything because of compatibility and funni Nvidia drivers

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Fedora. Cutting edge but works out of box. Very little change in use compared to Ubuntu.

Debian is good but very stable so no guarantee for some package updates which is useful for gaming and maybe proton.

On a related note, this is pretty useful: davidotek.github.io/protonup-qt/

By then Android will have gone through 10 yearly API level updates.

Assuming no OS competitor appears (which I really hope it does) it’ll probably last 5 years if you keep it in a good condition.

But if you actually use it daily like a normal phone, then probably much less.

Google will drop support quickly for the next lineup, and they probably won’t even bother with any bugfixes after a year and half.

Have a pi4 8gb and every time I need it for some mini graphics project, the GPU lags no matter how much vram I give it, so I usually end up using some old laptop with a GPU and the pi goes back to random things like data collection with sensors or some funny breadboard projects.

Also use it to evaluate lightweight linux distros.

Gaben already refused to sell to EA and made it abundantly clear that we would rather let valve die than go public.

Microsoft also just recently said they’d buy Nintendo if they could.

All this means is that Microsoft is filthy rich and still doesn’t know how to make an original quality game studio. They seem to overly rely on buying out studios and IPs that are successful to rake in more money.

Yes Indus is mostly in Pakistan

No there isn’t literally anyone who wants to change the name to India.

It would be like USA changing its name to USSR because the soviet union collapsed.

As funny as this is, I’m pretty sure it was an overhyped article because of the G20 invitation. I highly doubt Modi would willingly throw away all the clout from stuff like the Indian Ocean or Indian Plate just to appease some BJP people.
