NVU, Dreamweaver were tried to be like this. Only thing that wysiwyg'ing HTML isn't that easy as one might think, especially nowadays where thousands of web css frameworks exists and every structuring is done via divs.

You could make your own framework, or select/import one you like, but then the app will have way too much parameter, which needs to be configured by the user. It would be a really neat power tool, though.

ps.: Funny thing I was just thinking about wysiwyg editors in the recent days 😅

Check MD5 sums of downloaded ISO if they provide you a sum on the webpage

is your hdd/ssd healthy?

From Windows to about 6 recommended distros for gaming.

I am not bad with computers and have a beginner+, maybe intermediate level knowledge of Linux and I kept running into some problems here and there with different distros. Most claimed to work out of the box (which may be the case for some users, but I have a shit ass Nvidia 1060 and that was not at all the case, until I...

@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly I never expect any system to work out-of-the-box, not even Windows.

Most of the time if I see something JustWorks(TM) I suspect it is using some general ass drivers that may work, but with functions lost.

Probably this isn't the case anymore, but it still gives me a lot of work to verify everything is REALLY fine and dandy.

BlackBerry was managed to run Android next to QNX somehow (BB OS10)

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, it was already on old enough version when it was a thing.

But to my understanding, it wasn't emulation, rather having a compatibility layer between QNX and Android.

so AFAIK, it was rather like Proton on Linux? but maybe I'm totally wrong here, haha.

I kinda liked how Android apps almost integrated to the Hub. 😄

we need to just rebuild the web, built on a decentralized LoRa or such mesh network.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

I second this, having a dedicated, 2013 era machine for Kodi is more than perfect. Most plugins are maintaned and updated regularly.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

my experience with it was also kind of a rollercoaster, but libreELEC on x64 harware with some basic IGPU was the key for me.

I tried it on Raspberry Pis (OG and 3) but that surely was painful.

since using a nornal PC, I really have no issues with compatibility, even the most obscure, sonewhat recently updated plugins work no problem.

but I can feel you, it needed several chances from me too, but I needed to replace my PS3 (uaing Movian - what an amazing piece of software!) cause it had issues with some recent fullhd files.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

after rebinding ctrl/shift+Insert, it really is all one needs.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

I think it doesn't matter nowadays. Network interfaces are smart enough to twist them internally, or at least, this is what I experienced. I have no idea when did I had to use specifically a crosswire cable, all of my ethernet cables are patch cables for a while now.

So, it shouldn't be a problem.

@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

thanks for the reply, I'll definitely will look into alsamixer or pavucontrol and dig deeper, to have true 2.1 setup.

I have another, integrated card, but there's no room for the subwoofer output - or so do I thibk, that's why I'm using an external one.

All my pain would end by using a jack splitter/joiner, but where's the fun in that 😅

thanks again, mate. will report, if you are interested

I used and use for gaming and OBS mechanical hard drives - no issues with them.

I won't run OS from them anymore, but gaming and recording full hd live is not a problem.

maybe the OS doing some buffering to SSD, idk, but as NOT the only drive, they are still pretty nice.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

fill up the remaining space on the drive completely with 0s with a dummy file you delete then, before gzipping

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

What am I missing?

Nothing. If you are content with your current setup, you are missing absolutely nothing.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Konsole, but only because I'm on Plasma. I really don't rven like it that much, but... well, it's a terminal, it does terminal things so I'm more than OK with it.

On xfce, I would youse xfce-terminal.

anything is fine as long as basic stuff works - like ctrl/shift+insert (tho it's a thing I had to manually setup in Konsole 😅)

I had a friend in elementary school around early 2000s who was a huge computer nerd and with him I discovered the world of programming and computers in general - he was also the one who introduced me to Linux, Slax/Slackware, Blackpanther OS, UHU and later Ubuntu.

Then I installed my first Linux system for myself, which was Ubuntu then later changed to openSUSE. I loved it, up until the point KDE 4 came out and after 3.5, I hated it with passion so I dropped Linux for a while.

I had and have lots of Raspberry Pis, so I haven't abandoned Linux completely, also in University, I needed Linux so I had a Kubuntu as well, but didn't use it too intensively.

Also I used to bork all my Linux installations sooner or later to the point I was unable to recover them.

Now I built a new PC and I deceided I will use Linux, because I have no intentions to use Windows 11 for a while at least, so now my daily driver is Debian with KDE Plasma.

Tho I had no idea the louder part of the community/fandom is so toxic, cringe and childish, and I was and am in a few fandoms before, I've seen some shit, but not this much of a shit some Linux extremists have.

kuneho ,

some Android OSKs have Ctrl button, like Unexpected Keyboard (it’s FOSS), it’s also my choice.

downside, there is absolutely no dictionary and autocorrect but it’s absolutely marvelous, have all the keys and pretty configurable. has a bit of learning curve, since you swipe on keys to access more keys rather holding it down but this makes it powerful IMO

well there’s Logo which is translated to many languages - e.g. Hungarian in Comenius Logo, so great chance you can instruct at max 4000 turtles on your screen.

also, Excel functions are too localized and using them feels somewhat surreal 😆

I was always in and out with Linux.

My problem was always that something was always a bit off with the apps or environment than I got used to, and most of thr times I just couldn’t adapt. Things like my laptop touchpad worked differently, the mouse moved differently, apps had functions differently or lacking onebthing, others other things.

Also, most DEs was lacking functions (like dbl click on window icon to close), or were buggy. Then KDE4 came out and it was a trainwreck after 3.5 and I lost all my hope for a while.

And, on my mission to kinda solve these resulted always me bricking the system.

Now, to be fair, this was 10 years ago.

But, I know I won’t use Windows 11 for a while now and I kinda bored with Windows 10 so few weeks ago installed Debian on my PC with KDE Plasma. Tho I have nothing against Windows, it served me well in the past… 25 years. But now I’m more focused on dev work and productivity, and Windows 10 became slowly awkward for the different works I had. Most of the times I used WSL so why not just hsve the realdeal at the first place? Also, lots of Pis and some servers I have are also running Linux, so why not have it on my main machine?

It’s nice. Still have some minor annoyance or inconvenience with it, but I don’t care. Honestly, seeing what Linux became in these 10 years made me go ‘wow’.

So, I have hope in Linux in the future. Especially since OS and architectural boulders are rapidly disappearing.

I remember Wine being no more than a POC you can run Notepad or Solitaire on Linux. Now you can almost run any fucking game on a Linux system. This is awesome.

So, I’m testrunning Linux again before I invest a motherload of money into a new PC (I’m using a 2009 era server machine as my desktop atm) and if it’s good, I will continue to use Linux and probably Debian on my new machine and will format my drives and set up a partition table that is Linux-y, and not just mount all my NTFS drives and use them like they are native to the system.

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

yeah, most of my machines are around 3rd or 4th gen Intel, some of those are recent buys - one for libreELEC under my TV, one for remote work, one for my mother… unbelievably cheap machines, and with an SSD and 16GB of RAM, they run happily forever. (even with Windows 10)

kuneho ,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

thanks for the tip, but I’m not that cloud storage guy. I have a homelab running, if I need to share files, I just put them there.

Maybe OneDrive is what I used more before, but I can totally live without it.

kuneho ,

I was thinking about going the Arch route, I really wanted to build up my system from scratch…

but then I was like “I’m too old for this sh*t”, and I’m not even sure what I really want from my machine, so I was looking through distros… openSUSE was my other candidate, but I used Debian based systems and APT in the past 10 years… and I like the philosophy behind Debian, so installed Bookworm.

maybe, after a while when I know what I need, what I use and how I use them, will build my own Arch installation.

    The reason for that is not obvious to me

    It’s more of a convention

    loads of uninstallable dependencies on debian

    I installed Debain 12 about a month ago, and kept having difficulties with the package manager. It seems to lack any sort of sources in its default configuration, so that I had to manually add some which I saw online to the sources file. By default, the sources file only refered to some cd-rom thing, even though I installed the...

    kuneho ,
    @kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

    it sounds your installation wasn’t completely finished or idk, but your system shouldn’t be in this state in the first place - unless you messed with it.

    kuneho ,
    @kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

    could be either broken installer or maybe there was no Internet connection… or not netinst image

    either way, if I were you, it would really bug me and reinstall the whole system 😆

    Raspberry Pi 1 B projects?

    I have an old Pi hanging around doing nothing. When I originally got it it had the latest Pi OS with desktop loaded and ran like garbage, not surprisingly. So I messed with it headless for a bit, then found RISCOS as an option in Pi imager utility and that is just a neat OS. Fun to play around with for sure. But now I’m...

    kuneho ,

    I had a really important role of my Pi 1 B+ for a long time; it was a network storage for my PlayStation 2 to play ISOs from the network with Free McBoot and Open PS2 Loader.

    grabbed a big HDD, and old CD drive case and put everything inside. The Pi could be powered from the PS2s USB, hooked up a short network cable and it was ready to go.

    Tho I still have that PS2, it’s not in use anymore, so neither the Pi.

    kuneho ,
    @kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

    the PS2 needed only just a Windows Network share (SMB). I guess the XBOX too should have an option for that, so I don’t see any problem with it

    Sync got me hyped for Lemmy, I used it for Reddit for more than a decade.

    But, for Lemmy I started to use Connect, and while I was waiting for Sync, Connect became the Lemmy app for me.

    @kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

    I’ve built a 2nd/3rd generation Intel PC out from a Small Formfactor HP machine.

    Put 8GB of memory into it and a 500GB HDD. The whole thing costed me around… 35-40USD and got a remote for that machine for 20USD. It’s under my TV, in sleep mode so the remote can wake it up any time and the Power button on it puts back to sleep.

    Running libreELEC, which is a Linux system built around Kodi, and for Kodi there are lot of streaming plugins available - Netflix too. It can pretty much play back 1080p without issue, and maybe even 4k, but I couldn’t test it properly because I have a Panasonic plasma TV and that’s only full hd.

    Had some stuttering issue with Wayland, but with x11 it runs perfectly. If I set up the video player to synch framerates at the beginning and end of the video, it runs smoothly.

    These plugins use Kodi’s UI, so they are easy to navigate. It can’t get more comfortable than that, Kodi is way better than any shitty Smart TV system out there, especially those Android TV abominations.

    So yeah, a 2011ish PC, a DVD/Blu-Ray drive, USB remote, libreELEC and you never need any other media player equipment.

    One thing needs to be done, tho… I have to use DisplayPort <-> HDMI for video out and the adapter doesn’t really communicate with the TV so have to build an USB/LPT-CEC interface for it (Arduino or Pi Pico) and with that, the TV would turn on/off, change to AV or back to TV when the power state changes of the PC and also would be able to control Kodi with the TV remote too.

    kuneho ,
    @kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

    I now have a simple USB remote control. Since it’s USB, it can wake up the PC from sleep when I press a button on it.

    The USB-CEC would basically emulate a keyboard and send keys for the PC accordingly the CEC message the TV sends. If the PC is in sleep, the USB adapter could wake it up.

    kuneho ,
    @kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

    It’s not entirelly Linux, but there’s a port of FUZIX for the Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller

    kuneho ,
    @kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

    UnexpectedKeyboard is amazing. Changed to it after BlackBerry keyboard.

    tho there’s absolutely zero dictionary and prediction, the fact it has proper modifier keys like ctrl, alt, function keys alone takes the cake, but you can literally map any character to anywhere, and access even more by swiping on the keys.

    I don’t know how’s the developnent, haven’t checked for updates for a while, because I modified it a bit for my taste.

    It’s kinda on my list to fork it and add autocorrect, dictionary and prediction to it, unfortunately I don’t have much time :/

    kuneho ,
    @kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

    I think with the zergrush method, it can be rooted.

    Then, you can install Android 4.0.4 on it, or maybe 4.1 as well. I had a Xperia Pro, same 2011 series and I ran Android 5 on it.

    Those versions may have some apps that are still compatible.
