Thank for your suggestion, I will check it in the future since I'm not using/familiar with MPD and I prefer not using stuff in the AUR if possible. My actual solution is Quod Libet, it's very customizable and can sort music correctly by year. I would like to see Elisa improved since I find it very good.

You can selfhost Syncthing without having a server, using your daily devices.

danileonis ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

Don’t forget Synching, I always suggest it first since it doesn’t require a server or advanced knowledge to work.

Your smartphone is already an always connected device, and you can manually do periodical backups on external drives which is a good practice in any case.

You can also set which device rules the file modification (sent or receive only as a folder).

I think it’s ok for most of the people. If you have a tons of precious files to save I can agree with you, but I think this type of “off-grid self-hosting” is just the future of personal data management.

  • A good Invidious player with locally stored datas.
  • AntennaPod fork with improved local music management (tags).
  • A dedicated good PeerTube app.

The Distro Wars are good actually.?

If all the seemingly pointless discussions about which distro is better comes from attachment to a spesific distro and if a distro is just a way to interract with linux than all the discussion about witch distro is better etc. fundementally comes from a a place of love and appreciation for Linux as an OS....

There’re good alternatives for every app, the only real lost are contacts and dialer, imo.

danileonis ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

I also was an user but Aves Libre is a very good replace if you don’t mind the video editing aspect. But yeah, that app also probably deserve a good fork.

I’m actually using Ardour as my daily daw, very powerfull (check my profile if interested in libre music). Consider I made electronic music for many years with proprietary software.

The Best PeerTube Frontends are Mastodon and Lemmy

The fascinating thing about PeerTube right now is that the frontend experience actually seems to be best on other services. This is primarily because discoverability between instances is fairly poor due to both federation mechanics and due to the nature of bootstrapping social. Because Lemmy and Mastodon feature their own human...

This is gold. PeerTube experience is a mess right now, we totally need 2 or 3 big instances like here on Lemmy.

Problem with CD audio

Last month I upgraded my computer with new parts. I kept my old DVD drive that I mainly use to rip CDs. I have now however run into an issue that has stumped me. When I tried to rip some used CDs I bought the resulting FLACs had a terrible crackle, making them unlistenable. So I started looking into the issue and tried different...

danileonis , (edited )
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

Do you have tags on your tracks? Old FLAC versions have issues with tags, resulting in crackling. Try to use flatpaks whenever possibile.

Distro for experienced Linux user

Hi, I’m looking for a distro for my laptop. My first distro was Pop!_OS, then I switched to Fedora, then Arch for a year and 2 months ago I switched to Fedora Silverblue, because I wanted to try immutable distro that relies on containers and flatpaks to be usefull. Silverblue is great but not so much for me, its not flexible...

@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

And that’s actually one of the reason to choose it, runit feels so smooth on old hardware!

danileonis ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, I was just remarking that for everyone interested, like an addendum to your post. :-D

What Linux options exist for passkeys?

I see Google and Apple really embracing passkeys lately and I’m trying to understand the hype, but it can be challenging. I also see that Bitwarden and 1Password are embracing them too. As far as I can tell, passkeys are just key pairs that behave like FIDO2 tokens (e.g. my yubikey) but are backed up to some cloud and usable...

danileonis ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes I also suggest Ardour over other DAWs. :-]

I remove it time ago since I noticed slowing-down on my Firefox.

Dark breeze. I’m actively searching for icon alternatives but they are not well integrated with system-color-accent.

danileonis OP ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

It isn’t on the list. There are maybe old releases for legacy hardware?

danileonis OP ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

I would like to find it a purpose because I don’t like to just put everything in the bin, maybe I can learn somethin idk! :D

danileonis OP ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s a very old purchase, I was an ignorant Windows user at the time. :O

Same? I think this hardware is so useless that don’t even worth it to build a custom firmware. :D

Instant Messengers Analysis and Comparison ( privacy.awiki.org )

The table is quite big (190+ lines of hand-written HTML) and it doesn’t fit on mobile phone screens unless you zoom out. It should be fine on desktop. It also specifies the criteria followed and has analysis of some of the IMs in the table (not close to all of them, I hope to add more analysis in the future)....

danileonis ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

Didn’t expected an actual valid comparison, good work!

What’s the best note-taking app currently out there?

Looking for a note-taking app, preferably that I could use straight from a browser. I’m currently using Standard Notes. Not sure if that one is any good, but E2EE and open-source which at least checks those boxes. I don’t store anything too sensitive and I don’t need a whole bunch of features, though I suppose I’d use...

I recently started to directly use KeePassDX even for notes (since I sync it with syncthing) and I must say it’s very good.

danileonis ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

Agree. That’s another reason to always suggest KeePass!

danileonis ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s free on KeePass, use syncthing to have personal libre cloud.

older laptop distro recommendarion

Recently I’ve gave up Windows for Linux and installed Ubuntu with KDE Plasma desktop on my pc and laptop from 2007. It’s an i7 Intel processor with 8gb ddr ram so I thought it would be fine, but it seems quite sluggish. What distro could I use that would be faster and still fully functional? Thanks for your help in advance.

danileonis ,
@danileonis@lemmy.ml avatar

If you are an advanced user voidlinux is very good for laptops, in my experience without systemd you have faster boot timings.

I just probably need to buy a fire stick a software with a tv-like UI, where I can use a remote to visit streaming websites in an easiest way.

YouTube will now show a blank homepage if you don’t have watch history on ( www.theverge.com )

YouTube is changing the homepage experience for users who have their watch history turned off. They will now see an almost blank homepage with just a search bar and buttons for Shorts, Subscriptions and Library. This is intended to make it clear that personalized recommendations rely on watch history data. The new design aims to...

Peertube needs a couple (or more) large instances to be anything to start with. Right now it’s no man’s land, sadly.
