Not sure if this is the right community, but I didn't see a general one. What search engine do you use? Besides Google increasingly spying on its users, the quality of its search results seems to have gotten significantly worse over the last decade. What search engine(s) do you use?
I used to have to put !g (redirect to Google) on like half my searches to get the results I wanted. These days, I actually generally prefer DDG's results over Google's.
I wonder how much of this idea that you can be "too old to learn" came from the advent of schooling and childhood education. Like, in a time before everyone went to school up until a certain age, did people still have this mindset?
Regarding the TTS specifically, I remember looking into TorToiSeTTS back when this stuff was first coming out. You can generate ElevenLabs quality audio with it, but it's insanely slow. In fact, when I was looking into it, it seemed like ElevenLabs may have been using a (much faster at the time) version of TorToiSe TTS, given the output is so similar.
According to the linked Github page, they seem to have solved the speed issues now, so it might be worth looking into. Of course, the other commenters have provided solutions that are pre-integrated into the LLM, but if you're just looking for TTS this could be worth checking out. Also worth noting that this requires an NVIDIA GPU.

I always hear about people saying "my subscriptions aren't showing up" and I don't get it. They're right there, sorted in reverse chronological order. I've literally never experienced this problem.
Of course, not to say the data isn't also important though. It's very possible that we're missing something crucial regarding how the brain functions, despite everything we know so far. The more data we have, the better we can build/test these more streamlined models.
I'm excited about the prospect of actually managing enemy types. Defense is too much of a set it and forget it thing right now imo - by mid-game the biters are barely background noise over my turret walls.
There's a lot to take in here, but it sounds like I've got some work to do - not necessarily a bad thing. It's honestly about time I took my network more seriously and set up some proper routing / firewalls.
Sorry, yeah, "broadcasting" was a bad word choice. What I meant was that if I port-forward, it exposes that socket to potential bad actors searching for exposed services.
True, these do sound like the best solutions honestly. I wanted to avoid something like Tailscale, since it just becomes another point for me to support/troubleshoot on the user end, but maybe I should reconsider. It's a tradeoff, but it would also simplify a lot on my end.
So, this isn't exactly retrocomputing and it looks like it's from four years ago, but I just found it and thought that many here may find it interesting....
I really like this idea, and now I want to put it in a session. Like, we go through the whole 2-brothers riddle, but it turns out that the one explaining the rules is the one lying.
Maybe both doors lead to "death"/encounters, maybe the players are free to just walk past the brothers without consequence, maybe a third more interesting thing happens.
Well, fair point about the spam bot creators, but in my experience, even in one-on-one chats, it holds up. I've had some pretty smooth conversations without anyone suspecting it's AI.
I just had that problem when you browse to a Mastodon post and ⭐️ it, or try to follow someone. The choreography is clumsy, and the kind of thing that will hinder mainstream adoption of ActivityPub....
My take is that if the Fediverse can be destroyed simply by a particular instance being too popular, then maybe that’s a problem with the Fediverse - not that instance.
In this case, I would argue MimicJar's point (Edit: Shit, I didn't notice who I'm talking to. Well, you make good points I guess, lmao), and say that even if we were to defederate with the large instance, we're still no worse off than if we had never federated in the first place - in fact, we'd likely be better off, since any anti-nazi users in your scenario would know where to find us.
The way I look at it is like, if Reddit were part of the Fediverse, they would've dominated in much the same way as Threads intends to. But the moment they even started pulling sketchy tactics, we could've jumped to other instances.
I mean, that's essentially what I did anyway, but with no clearly defined alternative, not everyone knows about the Fediverse, whereas they would've had that option if Reddit was federated. Plus, in theory, I'd still be able to view and interact with Reddit content from my instance, at least until they separate entirely - at which point (again) I would have the choice.
I personally believe that, given the choice, many people would decide to support smaller federated instances over corporate monoliths. Not most, but many.
Depends heavily on the talk, but I’m generally in favour. Not only do you learn from the talk, but there’s a lot of benefit to just being around likeminded people, chatting about the presentations over lunch or whatever.
You create a new user to repost that users content from reddit? This is absolutely ridiculous. You make it so we can’t block your spam by blocking the bot user if you create a new user for every post.
Yeah, I’m never going back again. It was fun when it was supported by donations and user-focused, but it’s essentially indistinguishable from Facebook at this point. I’m just glad this alternative exists.
