‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services ( www.theguardian.com )

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

"piracy"

... Wait, no. Piracy is the answer!

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

She later said Telstra had contacted her and offered a free Fetch box, which she acknowledged was a “reasonable resolution”.

And we have learned exactly nothing here. See you in 2 years when Fetch closes down and you are not getting anything back because you actually did not "buy" those movies on Fetch but on the previous platform.

I am always amazed how these github pages often have 0 information what the software is actually doing.

For this one too you need to follow a link on the mainpage to get to a different site that tells you its for backups. I might have missed the word backup on the github page though... Ah no, it is mentioned a few times but the context makes it hard to get that's the purpose of the software.

Awesome! Also great its just one breaking change. I think I don't use that variable, don't recall it at all.

r/sysadmin and the size of this community

So I have been a part of this community for a while and it seems pretty quiet. I know Lemmy is not as big as Reddit so this community will always be much smaller but I kind of miss the activity on r/sysadmin. Infinity for Reddit still works for view only so I have been scrolling though posts on Reddit as some of the stories and...

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Fully agree. I see this sentiment so often, "we gotta tell people from reddit how great it is here!"
This might work with something like a meme community, but once it becomes a bit less mainstream you need people to make that decision themselves. It will look needy and annoying to try and "educate" them about how supposedly great it is here.

Flat fee is good. If its subscription I am hoping for forks.

Edit: also, I don't care what they say they plan to do. In the end actions matter. They can say now its just a small flat fee but 6 months in they can change their mind and make the crappiest micro transaction model they can think of.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Well, if those were "legitimate" ads the OS would have ways of shutting those down.

That aside, anyone thinking that's the last time they'll try that shit is oblivous. It will come back, because why not. Only solution is to finally stop using Windows if you can, or at least dual boot.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

This is it. Also given the low quality of the movies production wise you can even rip them at suboptimal settings. I am sure Mom won't care if she watches her Christian propaganda at 4k or 720p with some visual artifacts.

RootBeerGuy ,

Add to that its not even the current android version on it. This company does not sound like they will give you updates so a bad availability of custom ROMs is really limiting.

You can use it as standalone app to track location at set intervals. But it also has a server app to synchronise to as well. Haven't used it as such, I only record to a file, but maybe this works for your purpose.

Good for the Immich guys, but I fear incoming enshittification or a subscription model.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I don't mind if they are going to charge for it. But since it is selfhosted I hope a fixed price option with maybe still getting some important updates is on the table. If this goes subscription I am out.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I am not sure I understand the issue, are you or are you not wanting to backup those memes? Because in the immich app you can select the folder to backup from, e.g. camera, and in the timeline on my phone in the immich app I only see my camera timeline plus backed up images, but not other folders on my phone.

If you mean they all get backed up from different folders into the same timeline, then yes, that's a bit stupid. I have a situation like that and what I did was to make a separate account on my immich server just for art I find online I am collecting. Then I don't upload through the app, although with switching account you maybe could, but instead move those images into that accounts external library. Then share the whole library of that account with my actual account. Then it appears in the shared tab. But I understand that might get too cumbersome.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yeah, but I am not paying for their food, I am paying for the software that I selfhost on my system. With that analogy you can justify subscription for everything in life, since in the end, people gotta eat.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Wouldn't this be a usecase for a immutable distro? Cannot really break it? But haven't used one myself yet so not sure how that holds up.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Thanks for bringing up that aspect that is often overlooked in these discussions.

Downloading/torrenting kids cartoons

Hey all. noob-ish pirate here. Skipping long winded post. I'm struggling to find sources to download/torrent kids cartoons. Some are easy, but I'm looking for paw patrol and it's scarce on 1337. The more modern stuff and the super popular stuff are a little easier though. Not really any information on the Wiki about this stuff....

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I think the ones you are missing are just not pirated somehow, no idea why. I have those same episodes missing and I don't even get them in English. At least the ones from Season 09 I remember, not sure I got similar missing ones in Season 10. Always thought its because they are not out yet in our language but sounds like they are just not available.

I don't know what Mattermost is and clicking on the link that OP provided I only see a sign-up page. I don't know before signing up what kind of content to expect. Not quite enticing to sign up in that case on what looks like some random page.

Good idea but I am not sure this can take off. But maybe I am not the target population here.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Very cool but what it is missing is showing when projects were updated last. I got excited seeing there was an Android app for Portainer but going to Github I can see last update was done 2 years ago. I don't use Portainer anymore so it is not worth trying for me if it still works as intended.

RootBeerGuy ,

Why on earth would you want YouTube comments. That's the best thing about this, switching them off.

Jokes aside, happy for you that something you are using is working again.

That annoying thing is more on Protonmail though and I don't mean that as a negative, just more difficult to connect when the provider wants to keep things secure.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yes, but people were claiming they had a good reason not to be FOSS. They could have easily just not mentioned it at all but instead they name a reason that isn't an issue for many others.

Alright, I got to ask. Having one app for all these services sounds great. I remember some drama around it though, don't recall the details. So what am I missing, is this actually good news?

Its not open source but neither are most of the apps it connects to.

Yeah, good luck with that. There's the famous case of Munich (I think it was Munich?) moving their governmental workers from Windows to Linux. After a few years they went back. Unfortunately the average working enduser is still not ready to just use Linux. Especially not if its a Word/Excel/PowerPoint type of job.

Edit: ah, example is in the article.

How should I do backups?

I have a server running Debian with 24 TB of storage. I would ideally like to back up all of it, though much of it is torrents, so only the ones with low seeders really need backed up. I know about the 321 rule but it sounds like it would be expensive. What do you do for backups? Also if anyone uses tape drives for backups I am...

Two questions, and please don't take it as criticism, I am just curious about rsync but also one point you make.

"They go unmaintained" seeing as Borg is in use for quite some time, how does this look safer for rsync? For me it looks like the risk for that is similar, but I might not know background of development for these.

Second question more something I am asking myself, a lot of people seem to use rsync for backing up, but it is not incremental backup, or is it? I saw some mention of a "time machine" like implementation of rsync, but then we are again at your argument it might go unmaintained as its a separate niche implementation, or does that main rsync support incremental backup? If not, are you not missing that, how do you deal with it when just a file changes? New copy of it being transferred or somehow else?

Are you me? Same progression.

I didn't have issues when I still used them, well, using the 7 to type this. But I gave them to my girlfriend when I switched to a new one and she didn't have much luck.

The Pixel 2 after a year started to have issues in cold weather, it would just shut down, no matter how much battery was left.

The Pixel 5 she is using now has a power button issue. It gets stuck from time to time and can lead to something that looks like a bootloop. Then you need to get it unstuck and its fine again.
