That sounds like exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. She's not great at managing her electronic time yet and she needs some guardrails to make sure she's not staying up all night watching YouTube videos and things like that.
But I also want to give her the opportunity to learn and explore
I appreciate your input, I was also teaching myself to code by the time I was in middle school, but this is a different situation and some guard rails are needed to manage screen time and app usage, etc.
I'm not so much worried about her wrecking the computer and more about her wrecking her brain with unfettered access to the Internet
Thanks for the advice. Yes I absolutely want her to have the opportunity to learn more technical stuff and be able to explore and play games. Also lan parties for games.
I just want some guard rails because we have issues with managing screentime and things like that.

Guess it just depends but I see a lot of people interacting on certain topics and a lot of posts I make get a good amount of activity. I get way more interaction on my posts than I had on Twitter for instance.
Just enabled DDG's app track protection to test it out. Had Nekogram opened for a few mins, and Google already made 234 data collection attempts. I know the Big Guys are hungry for personal data, but this is absolutely ridiculous....
Seems like an interesting effort. A developer is building an alternative Java-based backend to Lemmy's Rust-based one, with the goal of building in a handful of different features. The dev is looking at using this compatibility to migrate their instance over to the new platform, while allowing the community to use their apps of...
I'm trying it out since I just upgraded to proton unlimited.
It's pretty barebones. It has automatic uploads but only from the camera folder. It does have the ability to share links, but no folder or album support for sharing. No face tagging or object recognition that Google does
And fuck. I really miss plex. I’ve had Netflix and Hulu forever as family won’t let me cancel. Decided to sign up to Paramount + for some Trek. Twice in lower decks it didn’t save my watched episodes. Doesn’t mark episode as watched if you exit during the credits. And multiple playback issues....
Am I the only one who has a distrust of pirating video games? Watching a movie is one thing but a video game is actual code running on your computer downloaded from an untrusted source.
I want to get back into reading, so I’m thinking of getting a Paperwhite. But I have no idea if it’s possible to transfer files to it from a computer, and I have no experience with pirating books....
Linux for Kids?
I'm thinking about building a desktop with one of my kids and I would really prefer to put Linux on it. My wife is not a fan of the idea, however....
Lemmy.ml is acting as a proxy instance for Hexbear and should be defederated by any instances that defederate from Hexbear

What are you using as a Google photos alternative? Currently I'm using Nextcloud but I'm thinking of switching to a more dedicated solution....
