Okay first things first Jack Dorsey is a tool

The US government / CIA did in fact develop the protocol back in the day, with the goal of helping people in China and other countries message securely, probably with ulterior motives.

But the protocol itself is open source, and you can use it without any affiliation with the US government.

The claim " It looks almost as if big tech in the US is not allowed to build its own encryption protocols that would be independent of government interference 🐕‍🦺" is therefore so stupid it almost invalidates everything else being said because the person writing is either an idiot or purposely misrepresenting the facts.

Not having reproducible builds is definitely weird though. Does anybody have more information on that?

PotatoesFall ,

wasn't this a mac only editor? Or am I confused with another?

PotatoesFall ,

How dare people complain about something they don't like!

That aside, the article is shitty lol

PotatoesFall ,

for sure! Just didn't like the presentation.

PotatoesFall ,

I think they had a point, but they didn't care to make a high quality writing out of it. It's basically a rant

PotatoesFall ,

Just realized I've never used the flat hub website

How the xz backdoor highlights a major flaw in Nix ( shadeyg56.vercel.app )

The main issue is the handling of security updates within the Nixpkgs ecosystem, which relies on Nix's CI system, Hydra, to test and build packages. Due to the extensive number of packages in the Nixpkgs repository, the process can be slow, causing delays in the release of updates. As an example, the updated xz 5.4.6 package...

PotatoesFall ,

I think the post was more about pointing out how long it takes to put out a security patch. Security patches can also occur on stable.

PotatoesFall ,

Agreed, shitty read. The 30% cut is crazy high though, and IMO the best point the article has. Steam DOES have a monopoly and that's inherently bad

PotatoesFall ,

I'm not saying Steam is the worst thing out there right now. I'm saying monopoly is inherently bad, and 30% is a crazy high cut even including the features you mentioned.

PotatoesFall ,

That's still a monopoly. The article says it too, if you don't put your game on steam, your sales suffer. It's similar to how spotify has a monopoly on the music streaming market.

PotatoesFall ,

having a market share like that is a form of monopoly. It's obviously different from absolute monopoly, but they wield too much power as is.

And to be fair, running games on linux without steam is definitely more tricky than without.

Best article about XZ backdoor?

Hey, I've been hearing a LOT about the xz backdoor. Crazy story, but rather than reading 10 different articles about it from 3 days ago when the story was quite new, does anybody know a high quality write-up that has all the juicy details and facts? I really like in-depth guides that cover every aspect of the story....

PotatoesFall ,

It's private and you can verify that, not to mention it's non-profit. WhatsApp claims to be private but Meta has broken promises before and doesn't let us look at source code. It's not a "tiny bit"

PotatoesFall ,

in some circles yeah.

In Germany it actually became famous because it allowed for huge groups and it's where covid misinformation breeding grounds took off. People thought you were a nutjob if you had telegram lol.

Which, while that is the dumbest reason to reject a chat app, at least meant that Signal was able to get more popular with uhhh smarter folks.

PotatoesFall ,

start a meme group. People may not want to install a chat app to talk to you, but they don't want to miss out on juicy memes.

this strategy worked for a few of my friends at least.

MEGATHREAD for fully FOSS lemmy apps without any ads, tracking or any other anti features.

**>- If any app ( regardless of the platform they are in ) you know of that is fully FOSS and doesn't have any ads , tracking or any other anti features that didn't make the list it is a mistake and you can dm me and i will add it. The same goes for apps that are not really FOSS or have anti features , Even though i have tried...

PotatoesFall ,

I'm using it on android but the whole interface is iOS style, I'm guessing it was made for iOS in the first place.

PotatoesFall , (edited )

I was able to break fedora silverblue by messing file permissions in the home directory. Toolbx then stopped working, without which the distro is unusable.

You can also make chaneges in /etc and similarly ruin your system.

Just saying they aren't quite as "unbreakable" as advertised.

PotatoesFall ,

Oh I didn't know that, that's good to know! thanks

PotatoesFall ,

I tried COSMIC just two weeks ago and it is incredibly buggy. Like, I crashed the whole desktop twice in 15 minutes.

My prediction is that they will build an amazing DE, and it will take way longer than they anticipated.

PotatoesFall ,

sure! I'm not complaining, just saying that I predict it will take longer to complete than they anticipate

New to Linux? Ubuntu Isn’t Your Only Option ( www.howtogeek.com )

Ubuntu's popularity often makes it the default choice for new Linux users. But there are tons of other Linux operating systems that deserve your attention. As such, I've highlighted some Ubuntu alternatives so you can choose based on your needs and requirements—because conformity is boring.

PotatoesFall ,

It's good but Fedora or at least OpenSUSE should definitely take the place of Manjaro.

PotatoesFall ,

why are distros with KDE a really hard task? users who want customizations will have a horrible time with gnome

PotatoesFall ,

True. Although I would say the same about Manjaro

PotatoesFall ,

KDE is default on some distros and is supported directly as a variant on most major distros so I wouldn't say GNOME is the default.

But my point is that at least some of the appeal of desktop linux is customization, and GNOME will be a disappointment for the users looking for that.

Otherwise I agree vanilla GNOME is rock solid and great for new users!

shorting means to bet against a stock. instead of buying a stock and waiting for it to grow over a long period and selling it for more money (long position), you borrow the stock from somebody, sell it, then buy it back (for a lower price) after a short amount of time to give back to whom you borrowed it from. (short position). If the stock price rapidly drops in that time, you gain money.

If this sounds like a perversion of what investing was supposed to be, yeah welcome to wall street

PotatoesFall ,

Even my most alternative, vegan, communist friends agree with me when I pitch the fediverse and then flock to capitalist social media like moths anyway. It's disheartening.

PotatoesFall ,

They already make money with ads. Killing third party apps was part of this, now they can control exactly how you see ads. It's the same as any other social media now, they recommend you content, which is exactly not the point of reddit.

PotatoesFall ,

So they’re building a whole complex text editor just for the desktop environment? seems like a weird priority or is the text editor a separate project?

PotatoesFall ,

Ah gotcha that makes sense thanks!

That being said I can imagine if KDE didn't have Kate or Konsole or any of that - there's plenty of text editors and Terminals that already exist out there.

PotatoesFall ,

Ah I didn’t realize COSMIC also comes with its own GUI toolkit but that makes sense, thanks!

Is linux good for someone tech illererate.

Now i’ve been considering moving to linux. I don’t have much of a history using a computer and find it tougher to use than my phone. But I also really appreciate the foss movement. I’ve currently got an old laptop running windows 11 I think and it would prolly speed up with linux too. But I’m afraid I’d fuck smth up...

PotatoesFall ,

i gotta join in with the other Linux Mint voices here. It’s very user friendly. You just need to know:

  • the desktop environment is called Cinnamon. this will help you google stuff.
  • the system package manager is called APT, and if you just use the update manager you won’t have to interact with it directly, but it’s good to know.
  • in the software center many apps have the options sytem package or flatpak. system package means it goes through APT, flatpak is a sandbox system that is good for isolating your apps from your system. imo always choose flatpak, except for steam.

Been Learning on my ZSA Moonlander, but I'm Stuck at 60WPM ( lemmy.world )

I recently got a ZSA Moonlander and started learning colemak dh. It’s been a really fun journey so far and I’m now able to type consistently at 60 WPM. However, as you can see from the chart I’ve sort of hit a plateau at 60 and I’m having trouble breaking it....

PotatoesFall ,

60wpm in 3 weeks is fantastic. It took me about 3 months to get up to my old speeds (also moonlander colemak dh) and 6 months to surpass my old speed.

Now that you’re 60 wpm, you can use this efficiently for daily use, and speedup will come automatically as muscle memory sinks in.

PotatoesFall ,

Not sure if this is bragging or a call for help

PotatoesFall ,

LMAO this great. I remember seeing your post yesterday and thinking: this is gonna piss some people off. Godspeed bud

PotatoesFall ,

looking at ur other comments it looks more lile you just want to be offended… Nobody was rude on the original post either. Still enjoyed this meme tho, thanks

PotatoesFall ,

I don’t understand the idea of branding laptops with distros, I thought the whole point of OSS is that it should not matter what OS you choose to put on your laptop.

PotatoesFall ,

ah okay that’s nice, fair enough!

Personally in that case I’d rather buy a framework, purism, system76 or similar laptop and keep donating to OSS as I already do.
