I would like to do more research on alternative non-profit governance structures. In my experience, non-profit boards seem to be just another mechanism by which the wealthy control decision-making in society. However, I don’t know what kind of structure would be better.
I think workers coops are definitely better than private ownership but it seems like there should also be some involvement of the broader community being served (or negatively impacted in some cases) in the case of non-profits.
So you don’t have one then? I’ve seen plenty of research on worker coops, and I’ve never seen any that supports this idea. Without any evidence I’m left to conclude that this is just capitalist apologia.
So anecdotal? Have you worked in a worker’s coop? It’s hard to see how some workers taking advantage of others would be worse than the owner taking advantage of them but if you have seen it maybe you can explain how.
Ok, this doesn’t seem to be the overall picture in the economic literature but thanks for sharing your experience. Given that, I can see why you hold those views.
I've explored a few platforms within the Fediverse, but most of them seem to be inspired by and mimic existing mainstream social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook. While this familiarity can be comforting, I can't help but wonder if there are any truly innovative and original platforms out there that offer a...
The problem with this innovation is that federation is hard for people to understand, let alone see the benefits of.
It’s easy to innovate in at least some ways. But innovations will only draw new users if those users can see the benefits of the innovation to them. I’m not sure federation passes this test on its own. So finding other ways to improve the social media experience may be necessary for the fediverse to succeed in replacing corporate sites.
Theoretically but in actuality no. All Lemmy content is accessed through communities and since threads content isn’t associated with a community, there is no way to actually access it.
This could change with future iterations of Lemmy but for now I think all this ranting and arguing is completely moot.
It is more relevant if you use mastodon but I don’t.
I really don’t understand the fearmongering around this. If that happens, instances just defederate. At worst there is a few hours or days of chaos. Doesn’t seem like that big of a deal.
Sounds like federation is more theoretical than real at this point. I don’t see much point in one way federation. But does this mean that threads users could pop into this thread and comment?
I get used to people telling me to try another game, but if I do and you tell me it doesn't count for some stupid reason and basically saying what you meant was "Pathfinder or old editions of d&d"? Yeah I'm fucking mad....
The issue is not that it doesn’t know everything, it’s that it doesn’t know anything. It’s not capable of knowledge in the sense that humans are. All it does is probabilistically predict which sequence of words might best respond to a prompt, based on huge amounts of human text that it was trained on.
Part of the issue is how will you train the model to know which things in its training data are factual and which are not? An incredible amount of human curation already goes into just avoiding the model from repeating offensive things, but the realm of facts is so so much broader than that. I don’t see any way it could be done.
But on the other hand I am only a casual observer of this technology and perhaps the experts will come up with a creative solution we can’t yet imagine.
I think the screams would be muffled but still audible. Until the bag is closed, the extradimensional space inside is connected to the outside world. However, since sound can only escape from the opening and not the sides of the bag, I would rule that it is much quieter, granting disadvantage on checks to hear the scream.
I always interpreted the suffocation to be only while the bag is closed. It doesn't make much sense if physical objects can enter the bag but not air. Why not?
Seems to have fixed some of the federation issues (some instances still experience some, but that probably needs to be investigated by the local admins)
You can of course plan the big lines of the campaign, but the more precise you get and far ahead of the present, the more you will either lose or railroad to not lose. Both suck
Honestly if this doesn’t happen I would consider finding another group. I’ve tried so hard to get this going in my original group but people just won’t put in the work. Kind of kills my interest in running for them. But my other group we’ve got a good rotation going so when I felt the itch to run something I prioritize them because I know they’re willing to put energy in the game. If the other one peters out then it wasn’t meant to be.
Search, people link to them, looking at community lists on interesting instances, etc. Honestly browsing by all as it currently exists is one of the worst ways to find new communities. Maybe that could be improved but that’s where it stands today.
My favorite is when the DM asks this about some seemingly innocuous action like “OK so you step on the tile then?” “So you pick up the goblet?” And then it’s like well I didn’t have any doubts until this exact moment.
Pretty big barrier to entry with how long the episodes are so I get it. They’re fun to put on in the background but then sometimes I miss key things. Matt is an amazing DM but I think some of the more edited dnd content is a better viewing/listening experience.
Yeah that is a tough place to start. It only lasts for a few episodes so you could power through but if you can’t take it then you could also just skip ahead and read a summary. Those early episodes aren’t super plot critical or anything.
99% of the danger on roads is caused by motor vehicles. Once we’ve solved that problem we can have a conversation about whether licensing improves e-bike safety. But until that day, creating barriers to car alternatives directly makes people less safe. If you prevent teenage hooligans from biking, they will drive instead and will be an actual danger to people instead of this imagined one.
What other changes has a thought process behind them? Virtually everything he’s done at twitter has seemed like something that occurred to him while shitting and then he forced his team to implement by the end of the day.

Ttrpg.network, which you joined, is one of many websites that can all communicate together with a common web protocol. This process is called federation and all of those sites together are called the fediverse. So for example, I’m logged into slrpnk.net right now but because both of our sites (called instances) are federated, I can view and comment here, and you’d be able to do the same on any communities hosted on slrpnk.net. You may have heard of mastodon which is more of a twitter alternative but it’s also part of the fediverse, so you should be able to use your account here to view and interact with mastodon content as well if you wish.
It’s a pretty clever system and while there are hiccups here and there, for me it has been a good replacement for Reddit. We just need more users and content to really get things going.
You made it over here! Yay! Is there anywhere we can see those now that they were deleted from r/dndmemes? Some were pretty excellent. Don’t think this community would allow those but I’m sure there is a community somewhere that would appreciate them.
