Ctrl + Shift + - should decrease the font size of the current terminal, which isn't what you are looking for, but could be useful while you sort it out. Is it possible that the font in the config doesn't exist, causing this issue?

What happens when the defaults change? Is old code all of a sudden not following the style guidelines?

This is such a high level description that it is a meaningless comparison. The fact that Fallout doesn't take itself nearly as seriously as Westworld is already a huge difference. Sometimes the implementation is what is valuable, not the idea.

We do require a BS in computer science

The only scenarios where I'd think I wouldn't require one are

  1. I want cheaper labor
  2. I am really desperate to fill a position
  3. The skills I need in a candidate are incredibly niche, thus I want to widen the applicant pool.

#1 and #2 are indicative of other problems in your company. I get that you can be a good dev without a degree, but from an employer perspective, it seems like an easy way to save time and money on hiring. I am convinced that a lot of money is wasted on recruiters who throw everyone under the sun into the hiring process just so they can justify their existence.

Wouldn't you argue that putting hard restrictions would have the benefit of shrinkjng your recruitment team? To be clear, I'm coming from an extremely anecdotal point of view, but to me it seems like tech is full of imposters jumping from job to job, playing up their experience. Recruiters cannot spot these people, because they know all the jargon despite having none of the skills. This is why these technical interviews exist, but now those are even being gamed by people by studying leetcode. I'd be really curious what a high quality tech recruiter does vs the average.

FYI, leetcode is not a "learn to code" website it is a "practice problems that will be asked at tech interviews" site. A lot of these problems are inspired by (or maybe are even literally from) interviews at "top companies" like Google, Facebook, etc. They are almost completely algorithmic or data structure problems, i.e. "unrelated to your actual work" (well, most of your actual work for most people).

Inspiron One 2305 has corrupted graphics after coming out of suspend ( lemmy.world )

This Inspiron One 2305 has corrupted graphics after coming out of suspend, this has happened with Gnome (Wayland), i3, less commonly Swaywm, almost everything I have suspended it with, and makes the computer unusable outside of a TTY. I am considering trying KDE next. What can be the issue here? I am currently using EndeavorOS.

I've had similar issues, but with a 7800XT and only with variable refresh rate enabled. Don't know if that is caused by the same thing though

Has anyone here built a Beowulf Cluster? ( spinoff.nasa.gov )

A university near me must be going through a hardware refresh, because they've recently been auctioning off a bunch of ~5 year old desktops at extremely low prices. The only problem is that you can't buy just one or two. All the auction lots are batches of 10-30 units....

The only practical purpose of such a cluster is educational purposes. Clusters as a whole are only useful for academics and researchers, so once you get into clusters using old hardware you're essentially only building the cluster for the sake of the challenge.

I'm someone that uses sway because I really like to keep my workflow as keyboard driven as possible. However, I do not necessarily need the minimalism of sway and sometimes miss the more polished experience of a full DE. Are there ways to configure Plasma to give me a sway-like keyboard-driven flow while still getting some of the other benefits of Plasma?

open-world action game

It’s amazing that devs are still crapping out games in this genre.

This would be cool if this ended up being “Alien Isolation but with dinosaurs,” but I am not quite sure that’s the direction they are taking based on the trailer alone.

I can’t speak for the whole suite, but Excel sucks in the browser. The browser version do not have all the same features as desktop. I only use Office if I’m forced to and use LibreOffice or Latex otherwise

I can’t easily get X on my system to test

This can’t be true. If you are on Arch, this should be very easy to do. I’ve had a backup i3 session available on my system for years alongside sway. It should be as easy as installing an X based DE and then selecting that session from the display manager

Looking for application to do very simple 2D animation

I spend a lot of time creating system diagrams for presentations. I always use Inkscape to draw these diagrams. However I ran into a scenario where I wanted to animate them. The animations I’m looking for are dead simple. I want to be able to fade in, fade out, and slide basic shapes. The way I worked around it this time was...

Build your own locally hosted cloud!

This is the hard part to sell people. I feel like for self-hosting to become popular, there would need to be a “plug ‘n’ play” device that essentially has everything you need to set up a small server on your home network. If you could set up a home server as easily as you can set up a Google Home device, that would be amazing.

Does it execute both, or does it execute the branch that is more likely to be valid? Branch prediction seems like it’d be way more performant than executing both branches until the result of the branch condition is available. If you think about it, what you’re proposing will cause the CPU to always execute instructions that are not meant to be executed when confronted with a branch whereas branch prediction will only execute these “useless” instructions in the unlikely scenario where the prediction is incorrect.

Ran into an issue with the latest arch Linux update, how to prevent in the futur

I’ve been using Linux for the better part of 4 years so I’m not new to it, but I’ve always learned stuff on an as-needed basis. Today I ran into an issue that I want to prevent in the future since I had a mini heart attack thinking about how my last backup on this system was… Never since I’m an idiot who forgot to set...

Check archlinux.org before updating to see if anything requires manual intervention

informant in the AUR can also be used to halt updates and automatically show you messages from the site. Then you can just run the update again and it will go through.

That really depends on your definition of “sane defaults.” Even a lot of the computer science professionals I work with wouldn’t consider Arch Linux defaults as sane. I picture sane defaults to include a lot more basic functionality that Arch doesn’t have out of box (automatic suspend, desktop environment, lock screen, etc.).

I use Arch for the exact same reason you do though. Once you get past the tedious stuff like setting up your networking stack, setting up idle suspend, etc. it’s nice to choose whatever WM/DE you want and customize it how you want.
