If you don't use Bing with Edge, Microsoft will tell you your computer needs repairing.

https://www.tomsguide.com/computing/windows-operating-systems/microsoft-now-says-your-pc-is-in-need-of-repair-if-youre-not-using-bing-with-edge

They are not wrong.

To mend your machine:

  1. Ditch Windows
  2. Install Plasma
  3. Your computer is ready.

It doesn’t say anything about repairing, this is such a low class clickbait.

It is literally under the "Repair tips" tab.

KDE Connect should only enable downloading files from allowed directories, right? [issue report found, may be very old notifications]

I was working on some stuff on my PC and stepped away for a bit, and on returning noticed notifications on it that some files had been downloaded via KDE Connect from my phone. I was using my phone at the time, and didn't send the files....

Bro666 Mod ,
@Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Are you sure you were not seeing only notifications from your phone mirrored onto your desktop and not actual downloads? Bear in mind that is one of KDE Connect's features, showing notifications on the desktop of stuff happening on the phone. It doesn't mean that what the notification is telling you is happening on the desktop.

I’m looking for an up-to-date Plasma 6 tutorial for making plasmoids. Just a simple “Hello world” done correctly for Plasma 6.

Good point. Let's see if we can find someone to update that.

In the meantime, you may want to visit this page , as it contains dozens of link to resources, chatrooms, and mailing list that will put you in touch with the people that can help with your effort.

Support of these kind of devices on Wayland is still a bit of hit and miss and WiP AFAIK. I have two devices: a cheapo Wacom Intuos something that didn't work at all a month ago, but now works out of the box, and an XP Pen tablet that is recognised, but I can't configure the drawing area.

I guess what I am saying is "patience". Things are improving every day, but not all devices are totally supported yet.

That's because the rest have probably not been ported to Plasma 6. I am missing a bunch of widgets which still do not have Plasma 6 ports.

Bro666 Mod ,
@Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

That is not possible. widgets and Global themes have to be able to execute code to work.

By the way: the code was not malicious, just badly written.

Bro666 Mod ,
@Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Not malicious. Just buggy -- a downright nasty bug, but a bug.

Bro666 Mod ,
@Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Well, yes: the store does advise caution, as we have little control over themes and widgets uploaded by their parties. The same way we would advise caution about running random software downloaded from the internet. That said, it does say KDE Store, so we should have some degree of control over it for our users' sake. That is what we are working on.

That said part II, we can't do with it the wider communities support. There simply isn't the human resources necessary. The 2 options we have are to close down the store completely (but then people will just go to random GitHub repos and download stuff from there), or try to leverage the community to help us locate and remove (or at least quarantine) dodgy products.

Bro666 Mod ,
@Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

You must have heard that old chestnut about how "the weakest security link in the security chain is the user" by now. There is nothing any technology can do if the user decides to install insecure stuff. Even before today, the KDE Store prominently displayed warnings about being careful with the content.

Bro666 Mod ,
@Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

And this too. I mean, it is not like it is the fine print either. They capitalise the whole paragraph.

Bro666 Mod ,
@Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

I think that is one of the questions being debated by the Plasma developers. You may have more luck getting a complete answer here:

https://matrix.to/#/:kde.org

Bro666 Mod , (edited )
@Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Correct. The theme creator missed a variable that is not part of the Plasma environment anymore, and instead of running

rm -Rf [something]

it ran

rm -Rf

😬

    I think "free" is okay. If the software does come at no upfront cost, then fine, why not add that as an incentive to get people on board. They will figure out how to "pay back" sooner or later.

    I can tell you a word I do avoid, and that is "alternative". It makes FLOSS items sound like cheap knockoffs, always playing catch-up with their supposed proprietary and closed equivalents, always seeking feature parity, but never really getting as good as the original. This is not the case. Most software projects, once they reach maturity, more often than not, evolve into their own thing.

    Bro666 ,
    @Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

    You can also turn things on its head, like

    "Krita supports a wide range of tablets and drawing devices out of the box, so you won't miss expensive closed proprietary alternatives like Photoshop one bit".

    👆 improvised, but you get the idea. You get to reference something the user may know (and this helps you out giving them a clear idea of what you are talking about), and you cast "the alternative" (Photoshop) in a less positive light than the free/libre software at the same time.

    Bro666 OP Mod , (edited )
    @Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

    Not necessarily. If you go to https://bugs.kde.org, you can just describe the bug in your own words: what you do to trigger the bug, the expected result, what really happens, etc.

    Of course it is best if the bug is reproducible, i.e. that you discovered that every time you do x, y and z, a crash happens, for example. Like that, devs can confirm that it is indeed a bug of the software and not something that happens only due to some special configuration or hardware problem.

    So far, I have to say that my experience sucks.

    The theme I was using doesn't work. The icons all suck. EventCalendar, which was synced to my Google calendar is dead. Vivaldi looks like crap. The panel at the bottom of my screen is floating up probably 100 pixels, leaving useless space below it, I can't find a way to sink it to the actual bottom of the screen. I had increased all my font sizes because my eyes are bad, they have all shrunk and changing the font sizes and the interface percentage doesn't fix it.

    So far, not a happy experience @kde

    Bro666 Mod , (edited )
    @Bro666@lemmy.kde.social avatar

    Two of these are not KDE issues. The themes you are using don't work because the authors didn't port them, like we asked third party developers do... twice. Same goes for the calendar widget you are using. Go bug em, champ.

    KDE cannot be held responsible for third party add-ons, but, for everything else: https://bugs.kde.org

    Well, yes. Lots of minor annoyance are popping up, most are being easily solved, so there will be a lot of minor updates over the next few weeks. 6.0.1 will be out in 6 days and a lot of the stuff annoying the early adopters will go away then.
