Who needs 1000hz refresh rate? I understand it's impressive, but 120hz already looks smooth to the human eye.

I thought games are to have fun, what's the point of monetising them?

JackGreenEarth ,

That's not the default plasma theme, is it? It looks cool.

Dunno about the rest of your comment, but there are definitely other nonviolent religions apart from Quakers, such as Jains.

I use SpeechNote from flathub, which can both translate text between several languages offline, it also has good speech to text and text to speech capabilities.

Her father is a horrible person, but you don't have the responsibility to apologise for comments made by another person, even if they are your father.

I just updated gdm-prime on Manjaro to 46.0, when gnome shell is 45.6, and now gdm keeps crashing on startup.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

I fixed the problem by updating gnome-shell with the terminal

Copilot is available in Microsoft Edge, and you can bind a hotkey to open it.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

If you use it that often, why not just pin it to the taskbar or a keyboard shortcut?

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

I'm disappointed so many people disagree with this. Yes, now they're blocking opinions you don't like, but if they choose to block opinions you agree with, I doubt they'd continue whistling the same tune.

Signal also has its flaws. Use Matrix.

No idea, but it might help others to know what Desktop Environment you were using, browser, addons, etc.

The GNOME dash-to-dock extension has options for how the dock should display on multiple screens, if that's what you mean.

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? ( slrpnk.net )

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up....

Why would torrenting be unsafe or illegal? It's not illegal to download files peer to peer, at least in the UK. Where are you located?

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

Why would it be illegal to use peer to peer technology, at all? I can understand making piracy illegal - I don't agree with it, but I understand - but making it illegal to torrent anything?

What are the extra 2 traffic light buttons on the windows in your DE?

Searching got me nowhere and I'd rather not download try uninstall every video player from fdroid . So if anyone uses any do recommend as there is a fuckton of video...

What's broken about VLC? Presumably you've tried deleting app data and reinstalling.

Why do you put strikethrough the text though?

Voyager. And this is how it looks, by the way.

Yes, I was. I checked in F-Droid and the reason it didn't automatically update was something to do with an incompatible signature. But I updated it manually and it's looking fine now.

Simple fix on KDE wayland for windows to remember their last position ( imgur.com )

Thanks to /u/azvasKvklenko@sh.itjust.works for mentioning KDE window rules. In KDE, we can add rules for windows so that they behave in specific ways. One rule that can be added is the position: remember rule, and it's possible to make that rule apply to all windows by removing the match field. This way, closing and reopening...

5G shouldn't be a selling point anymore, especially as they're removing 3G in many areas.

Instagram Advertises Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps ( www.404media.co )

Instagram is profiting from several ads that invite people to create nonconsensual nude images with AI image generation apps, once again showing that some of the most harmful applications of AI tools are not hidden on the dark corners of the internet, but are actively promoted to users by social media companies unable or...

Many people have suggested better systems. They just haven't been implemented. And even if they hadn't, people should still be allowed to criticise the current system, if only to get the discussion started on how to improve it.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

Is that in an Android app? I also hate how there's no refuse all button, and it can take 15 minutes to opt out from all manually. I just use Rethink DNS to block ads and trackers and hope that that's enough.

Possible to make career in free software?

I'm a computer engineering undergrad in my finals and I really don't care about applying for jobs, there's so much competition and I hate just about every one of my classmates. I don't want to spend hours making shitty bloated proprietary software but 99% of jobs seem to be like that. Is it possible to actually make a career in...

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

Paying for support is perfectly reasonable, if the software itself is free.

I prefer Tubular for reliability+sponsorblock, or LibreTube for Material UI.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

Weren't they planning to change it from Microsoft's Android UI, it's just taking a while, as they have to rebuilt it from scratch? I thought I saw something about that.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

TurboWarp looks suspiciously like Scratch

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

I run LibreTube through Waydroid, but you have to enable HLS and do a bit of instancehopping to get it to work.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

I don't want an API, I want an open source model I can run on my own computer, with no extra cost, offline.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

Why would you do that when libvirt exists and is GTK themed?

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

I wouldn't just give to any random stranger without them even requesting it, because why would I? But if I met someone, I probably would have given them my phone number anyway. What's insecure about that? I can always block them.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

I tried Bedrock on Linux, with Waydroid.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

Ngl, looks like an interesting and cool project.

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

Its working fine on waydroid for me at the moment, so it's probably not necessary to try set up that. I mostly play Java anyway. Do you know how to install the google play store on Waydroid?

JackGreenEarth ,
@JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee avatar

So a third party FOSS app could use the satellite feature in the same way?
