And I find it hilarious that this was the thing that closed the portal down.

HobbitFoot ,

Yeah, but it seems like it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

HobbitFoot ,

I get the feeling that Jerry really shouldn't be making movies.

HobbitFoot ,

It is strange that this job went from glamorous to real shit.

You had a government mandated floor on prices until the 70's in the USA and the 90's in the EU, which meant that airlines had to compete on amenities and other ways to pull traffic to their airline. Once that price floor was removed, it became apparent that ticket prices were what drove most traffic, so airlines started doing whatever they could to drop ticket prices.

Whatever the Steam Deck would be if Valve went full Linux desktop?

To fend off tourists, a town in Japan is building a big screen blocking the view of Mount Fuji ( apnews.com )

The neighborhood suddenly became a popular spot about two years ago, apparently after a photo taken in a particular angle showing Mount Fuji in the background of a local convenience store, became a social media sensation.

HobbitFoot ,

It depends on the place. If there are places that are filled with independently wealthy people, they will try to make their home town as unfriendly as possible to tourists to reduce traffic.

HobbitFoot ,

I gave up, so I bought a USB-C to Aux adapter.

HobbitFoot ,

I don't think that the use of Steam Decks in this manner is a great thing for Valve. It is basically being used as a cheap Linux PC with built-in user input and the ability to self maintain if the manufacturer decides to sunset maintenance.

If Steam Decks get deployed in this manner, it would only be as the computer interfacing with expensive equipment, which isn't a large market and won't really make Valve money outside the hardware sales.

HobbitFoot ,

No. Enshittification happens because of venture capitalism.

Startup companies get a lot of money early on with the hopes that, after the investment cash is spent, there will be a profitable company left in its place. That company can become publicly traded or get sold to another company. The key is that the investors make their money off the startup.

The flip side is that, without venture capitalist companies, a lot of these companies wouldn't get the opportunity to grow.

We were playing a Ravnica campaign so I made an Orzhov Order Cleric who was a criminal attorney.

Red Lobster eyes bankruptcy option after $11M in losses from endless shrimp ( abcnews.go.com )

"Last year, Red Lobster reported $11 million in operating losses following its flubbed 'Ultimate Endless Shrimp' deal, which backfired when it reeled in too many customers after the limited-time promo became a permanent menu fixture last June. The restaurant chain later reported $12.5 million in losses in the fourth quarter of...

HobbitFoot ,

I'm not surprised. Every endless seafood deal Red Lobster did lost money.

HobbitFoot ,

And this is why he gives garbage financial advice. I've known several people who used their time living at home to build up a nest egg for a down payment.

HobbitFoot ,

I would have upgraded if they didn't include the UI changes. I don't know why Microsoft keeps trying to make these big UI changes given that they have a built-in audience of power users that have optimized since XP.

HobbitFoot ,

That isn't going to happen. Major have studios have developed their own ways of distributing games and found that the public don't really like it. For minor game studios, it is probably a lot cheaper to rely on Steam or an equivalent to do what you are describing.

HobbitFoot ,

And luckily New Jersey drivers are also still required to have a front plate, so you can identify them coming and take evasive action.

As long as you aren't camping in the left lane with your thumb up your ass.

HobbitFoot ,

And all it cost was having a store sell DRM software.

HobbitFoot ,

IT don't like it. Lock the taskbar. Lock the taskbar.

HobbitFoot ,

Given that the developers have publicly stated that there should be tons of instances run by anyone, pushing that much responsibility to admins with command line access is only asking for problems.

HobbitFoot ,

Naw, Copilot is loving the free technical data in the form of "AI and user created articles".

HobbitFoot ,

I've been to festivals that did, but they were very specific on the kind of bottle. The festival was also in the desert, so there tons of protections the venue took to prevent heat stroke.

HobbitFoot ,

A lot of festivals in the US had problems with heat stroke in the late 90's and early 2000's. The two solutions were to either give out free water or allow people to bring in their own water.

The festival organizers generally chose supplying free water.

HobbitFoot ,

I played a rouge that just hated to be around his family.

HobbitFoot ,

Um, actually, in the books, the Spacing Guild Navigators use the spice only to gain prescience into the future as a way to steer the ships while undergoing FTL travel. This can't be done with a computer or droid like in Star Wars because thinking machines are illegal.

HobbitFoot ,

Also I can't pirate my vacuum cleaner.

What is the position of the religions of your world on mysticism?

There are Christians and Muslims who denounce mysticism as being dangerous while there have also been Christian and Muslim mystics. Transformatsiya is a fictional religion created from the influence of Judaism, Christianity and Islam and was formed through mysticism and contact with the spiritual being Tanisha who revealed...

HobbitFoot ,

I'm going to flip the question on its head and ask something else, how closely does the religion of your world describe how your world works? Most religions were developed on the dual idea of trying to explain how everything worked and how to justify the desired political order.

A lot of mysticism is generally fought against by organized religion since it allows for multiple sources of divinity, which is something that a singular organization may want to fight. You may also have people fighting against mysticism as out of date folk knowledge.

It sounds like the world you're describing is that the religion accurately reflects the world, with mystics acting as scientists and engineers operating beyond the law. It would be akin to some random person in modern society working with radioactive or disease research.

HobbitFoot ,

So it seems like there is a spiritual world, but that the religion doesn't conform to the spiritual world, which creates a conflict.

HobbitFoot ,

It is a bit of both.

It is really hard to write a good contract that can handle the scrutiny of a public bidding process and it is really hard doing it when paying staff the wages that NYCHA likely pays the staff managing their contracts.

The jobs have gotten outsourced since NYC in general has found keeping staff on hand to be incredibly expensive, but the model of contractor maintenance is to make money where possible, not to serve the best interest. It is really hard to write a contract that makes serving the public good a money maker for the winning contractor.

HobbitFoot ,

My understanding is that you didn't see your career advance in Google if you maintained an existing product, only if you launched new ones. So, there is an internal bias in development teams to create new products while not keeping them around.

In some cases, this would encourage Google developers to relaunch products rather than improve existing products.

HobbitFoot ,

You still have massive server costs. You have to maintain the massive dynamic comment database along with pictures now.

They are still paying for developers to make new things, both on the front ends and the back end.

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' ( www.404media.co )

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

HobbitFoot ,

The start of the bubble popping was the increases in interest rates. We've seen several online companies shut down already because the free money isn't there any more and there is no path to monetization.

The problem with the Fediverse right now is that it is all run on volunteer labor and donations, similar to an early Reddit. It will be interesting to see how a distributed system solves this problem.

HobbitFoot ,

Some AI models already argue when people point out inaccuracies, just like on Reddit.

HobbitFoot ,

Great comic!

Also, this is why when I rolled a storm sorcerer, I made his background a blacksmith where his abilities helped him to maintain a forge.

HobbitFoot ,

Probably because it could raise copyright issues for Beehaw since Beehaw would be hosting the article.

HobbitFoot ,

Lemmy was founded on the idea that different instances can decide questions like this for themselves.

It seems that Beehaw has chosen one direction, but there may be other instances out there that have chosen another direction.

HobbitFoot ,

Maybe, but users from other instances would be lowest opinions I would expect the admins to consider. I would expect mods, financial contributers, and users registered to this instance to have a far greater day in how this instance is run.

HobbitFoot ,

There was an answer from a mod, they don't want to infringe on the copyright here.

HobbitFoot ,

No. It is worse if they try to make money on it, but a profit motive isn't necessary.

HobbitFoot ,

VR has been around as a technology for decades.

We are now at a point where people can walk around with a VR headset in without dying.

HobbitFoot ,

But which one is lawful good and which one is chaotic evil?
