15 games for $70 are enough to save $1000, which is definitely enough for a good gaming PC. After buying a PS5 and the cheapest PS Plus subscription, paid yearly (cause that's the cheapest option per month) for a little more than 8 years, you're also at $1000. With the most expensive PS Plus option it would only take a little more than 4 years.

In GNOME you just need to log in with your Nextcloud account in the system settings and it will add it in the file manager

What did RedHat do? Did I miss something?

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

And now they changed the name to HyperOS (my dad has a phone with it installed and is constantly complaining about it)

Fisch ,

Somehow those anime trackers are allowed to use the images too

I really love GNOME but the developers keep doing shit like this and I don't get why. Their reasoning for why they won't allow custom accent colors and only predefined ones was also stupid and then they just said that if people keep asking for custom colors, they won't implement it at all.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The reasoning for only allowing predefined colors was that, apparently, developers need to be able to test against every color and that Android's Material You is a total mess. I disagree with both of that, Material You seems to be working quite fine (I've also made apps myself) and I don't get what developers would need to test with accent colors. I couldn't voice my opinion tho cause then the whole thing would've been canned.

Is it that difficult to run Mastodon over Docker?

I am used to simple things running on Docker (Jellyfin, Nextcloud, etc.) I am looking at running my own personal Mastodon instance (maybe share it with a few friends and family), but I like using Docker. Looking at install guides, the steps required seem to be much harder than just editing docker-compose.yml and running the...

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

There's a project called Watchtower that is specifically for auto-updating docker-compose containers

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

ActivityPub doesn't refuse to fix them, it's just not that simple. Solutions have been worked on for a while.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

You mean from your Lemmy account? Some things federate between Mastodon and Lemmy but I'm not sure if you can follow people

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It's not part of Android and not even made by Google

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

They back a lot of stuff, doesn't mean they'll implement it into Android. If it's not open source, they can't make it part of Android anyway.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

No, people go on the distrowatch website, see mx linux at the top and wonder what it is because it seems to be popular but they've never heard of it, so they click on it, which boosts the ranking and makes it remain at the top. A website can't change your browser's start page.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I use it a lot when I'm on the go because it's just very quick and easy. I also contribute to OSM normally using my PC or Laptop.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

That's just personal preference tho. I don't personally like it either but that's part of the reason I use GNOME, I think that looks absolutely great. Great thing about Linux is that you don't have to use KDE Plasma or GNOME or whatever other DE, you can choose what you like the most.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Ok and I disagree. Aside from Android, I think GNOME is the best looking OS/desktop in general. Don't act like your opinion is the universal truth.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

No, I just stated that that's what I think. You're free to think that all Linux desktops look ugly but ir's not a fact.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

On my phone the difference is literally the video being unwatchably slow with Google's AV1 decoder and perfectly fine with VLC's

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Maybe you just have a faster phone than me or your phone has hardware decoding for AV1

Has anyone here encountered a problem with Fitgirl repacks where it keeps going until it fills your drive?

I was trying to install a repack of The Sims 3 with all of the expansions, full size about 31 GB, onto a drive that had about 300 GB of free space. Left it running overnight, woke up to my computer completely locked up because the repack had filled every single bit on my SSD....

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

That's weird, I never had issues either. Did you check the box at the beginning so it doesn't use more than 4gb RAM?

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I read somewhere that it should be checked because it can cause issues on Linux otherwise

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The thing is, the politicians working against us have been voted to be there. They convinced enough people that what they're doing is good for them. Also, there are also politicians that are working for our rights, there's a reason this has been on the table for so long without actually being implemented.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Installing F-Droid via Waydroid should do exactly that, no?

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

"Our service is totally different from the rest! The others are free but ours you have to pay for."

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Then they could also just use a Lemmy community

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Google shutting down a service?! That's a new one. I would have never expected that.

Any advantage to using something self-hosted, like Komga, in Mihon (formerly Tachiyomi)?

I recently found out that instead of just using online sources, you can also use something you can host yourself, like Komga, in Mihon. I'm just wondering if there's an advantage to it that I didn't think of because the only things I can think of are:...

Fisch OP ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It's just that I only read manga on my phone anyway (even though that might be because it's not synced between devices) and I've never had the issue that an online source went offline. I just thought that maybe there are other reasons, like how you can get way better quality when you self host something like Jellyfin for movies and shows.

Can't wait for forge federation, it's super annoying that I need an account for each individual instance just to report a bug

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

They already have their own Forgejo instance at git.suyu.dev

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Looks good to me. Great specs and the price seems fine for what you're getting too. If there's no common issues people are having, I don't think there's anything wrong with this Laptop.

Is there a way to stop gnome from using dGPU?

Been running endeavor OS on my MSI delta 15 (all AMD with no nvidia card) with KDE and it switches between integrated and dgpu like it should. However after installing gnome and using it for a bit I noticed that it was always having the dgpu idling. This basically cuts my battery life in half, and making it less than desirable....

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It would be nice if you edit your post to include what caused the issue, how you identified it and how you solved it, so others with the same issue can easily find an answer and so people who want to help you know that you already found a solution

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

That sounds like an issue with your Android ROM, it might be killing apps as soon as you switch to another one. I don't have this issue.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

This community is called "Unixporn", not "Linuxporn". Technically, even MacOS would fit/be allowed here.

Fisch ,

Didn't know about espanso but I've actually searched for something like this a while back but found nothing. So thanks for mentioning it, definitely gonna give it a try.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

it has stupid things like weekdays sorted alphabetically

Holy shit, that's stupid. Why would you even do this in the first place?! I can't comprehend how anyone could come to the conclusion that that's a good way to sort it.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

To make matters worse, many Chinese devices just kill everything in the background that's not on a hard coded whitelist.

Looking at Xiaomi's Miui here. My last phone was a Xiaomi one and it was great. It didn't take long for me to install LineageOS on it tho because Miui is horrible. It killed every app you had opened the second you switched to another one. Things like email verification codes were literally impossible to enter into an app because when you went into your mail app, copied the code and then went back into the app you wanted to enter it in, that app would have to start up again because it was already killed in the background.

Also, Miui itself used up like half my RAM without anything being opened and it was buggy as hell.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Btw, I recommend using Findroid instead of the official Jellyfin app on Android

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

There's also JellyBook and Finamp for that. IMO the apps for specific purposes are better.

If you're having issues with VR on Linux, I might be able to help you with that, as I'm using Linux to play VR. Took some time to figure everything out but it's working great for me now. Only important thing is what VR headset you have.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I actually have the Index, it's really great but also really expensive

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The knuckles are easily the best VR controllers by far

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Maybe do a memtest. Idk what the software was called exactly but you just flash it on a USB, boot from that USB and it will test if your RAM is okay.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I wonder why they don't just have Monero as an option

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It does when using X11 but it's a little annoying to have to log out and back in every time you want to play VR

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

If you set an alarm and shut down your phone, it will actually boot up again when the alarm is supposed to ring. This has been a thing for years on pretty much all phones, so they must have something like this already.
