Kind of hard to return this after 195 years if it fails.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Microsoft teams also stopped working on Firefox... Guess they don't like the tracking prevention stuff. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I don't know. People in the west dont seem to understand they also listen to propaganda every single day. But they think it's just happening in Russia or China.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Oh really? Let's calculate the power usage or billions of devices downloading and serving ads.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

This sounds like written by an Ai or some marketing person...

Ordinary people don't use phrases like "box maker System 76" or "highly anticipated by the Linux community"...:)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

All of this is the opposite of being real. People who are actually real have no attraction to publishing what they are doing to their friends at random times.

Who remembers their passwords? Use a password manager and it's as simple as a Google login. It even fills in the credentials automatically on a hotkey.

Ok you have to create a new password the first time you want to register somewhere. But how lazy can people get? It's also just a button click in a password manager.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

How is remembering one master password worse than using Google single sign on with a password?

Very few people will have experience with cosmic apps at this point, it's in alpha state... :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think it's probably the system. Some kind of bug I guess. I'm really looking forward to cosmic too btw, seems very nice. But I guess it won't replace plasma anytime soon. These things takes time....

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Totally agree. Arch is actually a really good, simple system. That's why so many people pick it as their main distro. Once you have installed it a few times, it's just very simple how it works. There is no magic.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

True, I have not installed it. I ran Fedora for a while long time ago and selinux was causing tons of headaches. So I never wanted to have it on my system after that.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

If only Helix would have vim mappings and a plugin system, it would kill neovim over night...

In it's current state, it's only suitable for people who don't need any plugins. So if you want a plugin for picking a virtual environment in python for example, you just can't do it in Helix.

I don't know, to me it's really limited without any form of plugins. I truly wish it had a plugin system because tons of people would write high quality rust plugins.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I did it, learned a lot. But it's not really a system that can be maintained very easily. You don't even have a package manager. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Unfortunately Jetbrains editors are still blurry on both Sway and Gnome in 4k. Only Plasma can handle it and shows sharp text. Not sure what they are doing that the others can't.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah fractional scaling 125%.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Looks fine but I don't know how you can use a light theme.... Hurts my eyes. :)

Firefox skin is cool also. I think I used something similar before also. It's from one of the https://github.com/vinceliuice themes right?

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That's not why most people drive cars. I've lived in cities with public transport all my life. But when I got my driving license, my life quality increased enormously. It's like night and day. Not only can I drive where I want when I want, I can avoid other commuters that are very often loud or annoying. I don't have to stand at bus stops or train stations and seeing them being delayed or canceled either.

I agree that some people drive poorly though. But the solution is to train them better, not to get rid of cars. You can hardly have an adult life with family without a car.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it sounds extreamly unusual that people in Paris live so close to their home. But I think the French culture is about enjoying life as much as possible. They may choose a job nearby to avoid having to deal with shitty transports every day.

One Login: Towards a Single Fediverse Identity on ActivityPub ( thenewstack.io )

In response to Bray’s toot, Evan Prodromou — one of the creators of ActivityPub, who is currently writing an O’Reilly book about the protocol — noted that this “is also the argument for using the ActivityPub API.” He described the API as “an open, extensible API that can handle any kind of activity type — not...

Creating different accounts is the only way to have privacy in the first place. Different logins makes you look like you are different people. Which is the point.

Theoretically, the development could allow a submarine to travel faster than the speed of sound without producing the mechanical noise vibration that usually gives away its location, according to the researchers.

LOL, imagine a submarine traveling at Mach 1 under water... :)

That's 1224 km per hour ( or 761 miles per hour)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Thanks, didn't think about that.

Maybe they can make torpedoes using the same tech....

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

11 minutes to watch so the guy can monetize his talking? No thanks.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It's just a dns server. You need to use Firefox with its tracking protection and plugins like ublock origin.

Or you can use a dns based ad blocker like pihole so all your devices on your home network is protected.

Then if you are like me, you set up a wireguard server at home, and configures your phone to use that as an always on VPN. And then your phone is also protected by your pihole even if you are away from home and using 3g/4g traffic.

Those sounds like American prices....

Would be maybe 50 dollars in western Europe. Just a guess.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

You are right actually, I should stop bringing it up. Doesn't help anyone really.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Western Europe is quite different from a third world country. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think it was more a reaction to bringing it up when someone is already feeling sad over his pet being hurt.

Everyone probably agrees with the facts but it was just bad style to bring it up in that moment.

Yeah I can't stand seeing cats foraging for food either. I was in Sicily and saw the same thing there, lots of cats, most of them damaged because of fights they had been in I assume.... It's a hard life for them.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I understand you come from a place of wanting cats to not be hurt, but I think humans don't have the moral right to do that to them. We think we help them, but isn't it the same as if we would neuter fellow humans because we think they are aggressive?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah. I understand... I wish humans would always have enough money to not be forced into things they don't want to do. Specially since money is just a made up concept, like monopoly money. But we all are forced to gather this resource that is not limited by nature at all. It's just limited so our own human economic systems won't break down.

So much things are based on money and it's not even a real limitation by the real world.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Glad I'm not alone... I can glance an article in 30 seconds, so I fail to see how video is a better format for this.

For udemy teachings, yes, video is great. But it's way overused for everything.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

In tech jobs where you write code, everyone uses Linux or mac. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

First thing I did was look at a proper benchmark: https://www.phoronix.com/review/cachyos-linux-perf/1

With the exception of the gaming benchmarks coming out well on CachyOS, in many of the workloads CachyOS didn't demonstrate any measurably better performance over fellow Arch Linux derivative EndeavourOS.

So it's great for gamers who want to squeeze extra performance from their hardware.

I really wish they would stop using Discord. None of the content is even visible on a search engine. It's a closed door system.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I'm really really exited for this. Feels like a kid on xmas eve.. :)

I haven't tried it but I feel like rewriting a desktop environment from scratch in a modern language like rust should make it very snappy and free from memory corruption and pointer bugs.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Nice, new chance to try a new distro :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I like thunderbird and i used it to structure up my email into folders and add rules etc.

But the fastmail web interface is actually often better, so I tend to use that. It's really well designed.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I never see the homepage even. It shows up if you close the browser? I never do that on my phone.

Most important thing is you can change your search engine to whatever you want.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I've heard about that actually :) Funny...

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Really? So interesting to me that someone would think she could even hurt the guy.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Well I guess, if the TV show is supposed to be like a game, then at least I understand why she is overpowered.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I mean, as the previous posters have said, if this is supposed to be like a game, then sure. Anything is possible. But if it was reality, she would have no chance against that guy.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I removed the smiley since I didn't intend it to be condescending. But I'm 100% certain that guy would knock that girl out in a second. It wasn't just "a man", it was a fit fighter man with tons of muscles.

But like I said, if it's a game, there is no real physics so anything is possible.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it's fine. Let's move on to other topics. :)

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah makes sense. I don't know the backstory at all so in that light, it makes sense. Guess they wanted to cast some sexy actor rather than someone who looks the part.
