Hmm, I just realized I paid more per envelope than per blank DVD.

Well, I was just thinking that I'd rather give them out for free, or the price of DVD + Case. So I thought I could save on cases by putting them in envelopes, but then I realized I paid 10¢ per SL DVD of which I have like 50 left and 23¢ per C5 envelope.
Kinda wild.

Although they are fairly low quality.

You mean directories starting with a .?

Depends on the file manager, nothing to do with Android. Which file manager do you use?

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Oh, stuff in Android folder?

That's been restricted since I think Android 11.
You can still access it using a computer with MTP.

Though there may be some better solution I don't know of.

The last selling point of a Pixel was the quick updates and long update life

And I thought it was the ability to re-lock bootloader with a custom key which is why Graphene OS is only developed for Pixels.

So, it seems it gets triggered by just using ADB shell???

What do you use ADB for?

Since adb backup has been deprecated, I don't see much use for it. Only for recent Android versions which disallow installation of apps targeting low API, as that can be bypassed using ADB.
Or maybe for apps like scrcpy.

@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Also worth noting, you should create file named .ventoyignore in the directories with other files. Otherwise Ventoy searches everything which slows it down.

If I want to quickly share something from my phone, I use NGINX in Termux with autoindex enabled.

No need for anything else than browser on client-side.
Actually, on Play store there's also a simple GUI app called "Simple HTTP server", but NGINX feels fancier.

Just a tip if you want to try this:
By default, error logs are kept. One source of errors is interface suddenly disappearing (i.e. your phone got disconnected from network). This error will be logged as quickly as it can be.
What happened (when this occurred)? I found my phone stuck in bootloop. The error log filled internal storage to the last byte causing Android system to crash and unable to reboot, which it tried again, again, again,... Bootloop. I just found my pocket suddenly feeling unreasonably hot.
In my case, forcing it into recovery, turning it off from there and retrying boot up freed 17MB from somewhere, allowing the phone to boot up.
Alternative to that would be a hard reset.

Sounds crazy, but any app could fill the internal storage like that.

ProtonVPN free (paid is still too expensive for me) and Mullvad.

I find that Mullvad is usually blocked more.

For the past 3 or 4 years I was just on ProtonVPN free tier. For past 15 days I am using Mullvad. I really like that you can choose some custom ports for WireGuard, and also the multihop.
What is unfortunate is that I can't generate separate credentials for OpenVPN, like with ProtonVPN. It just uses account ID.

I have also tried IVPN for a week. Nicer UI, but a bit more expensive, sort of. They have variable pricing based on subscription length, and that just makes me dislike them enough to stick with Mullvad. €5/month whether it's 1 month, 6 months, a year or longer.
I don't remember what specifically it was, but I know I also preferred the Mullvad's ToS over IVPN, although both are fine.

I also thought of AirVPN because of port forwarding, but for privacy I'll stick to Mullvad.

What surprised me with Mullvad was the payment processing speed. It only took 4 days from me dropping the envelope with money into mail collection box in Slovakia to me getting the time added. Considering that shipping to Sweden is "3-5 days", they must have just processed that basically immediately.
But perhaps I was just lucky. I'll see the next time.

Here's specs: https://liliputing.com/moondrop-miad-01-smartphone-with-hifi-audio-features-launches-globally-for-399/

Seems nice. I just wish it had removable battery, like phones used to, so I could carry a spare around, like I used to with Sony Ericsson W200i.
Also dedicated dual SIM + MicroSD instead of hybrid.

Just got an idea, the Galaxy Flip has 2 batteries. Small one, and large one. What if there was a small one built-in, and a larger swappable one. You could then hot-swap the batteries like with some ThinkPads (those with internal + external battery).

user224 ,

I turned off both sounds and vibrations for notifications and calls. The important stuff gets sent to my MiBand, so I still know about it, and right away know what it is.

How can I check this?

I tried loading (new) Reddit homepage, and based on Network tab in Firefox without any prior cache it transferred 19.20MB compressed to 15.29MB.
But that also includes any pictures shown.
Loading lemmy.world homepage transferred 5.88MB compressed down to 1.82MB.
old.reddit.com 2.82MB compressed down to 947kB. Quite a difference.

Just for comparison, loading Eaglercraft 1.5.2, a fully functional Minecraft JavaScript clone, complete with LAN multiplayer support took 8.35MB.

But what exactly is this measuring?

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I use NextDNS, which others have mentioned here.
But Mullvad also has public DNS (DoH and DoT only).

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Not as far as I can see.
But there's many false positives, which is also why NextDNS has allowlist.

Looking at mine, something even blocked www.guinnessworldrecords.com (Lightswitch05) and ieee.org (none of my current blocklists anymore).

Goodbye Ads also blocks xHamster. Interesting.

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Goodbye ads isn't even the default filter. This doesn't have much to do with NextDNS.
It's just one of the 3rd party filters.

Streaming is a continuous service. If you want that, you may actually want to consider one of the commercial options.

You could download the music and self-host a Navidrome server or something similar.
You could even do it like me and have Navidrome server in your pocket. It's natively available in Termux, so I can stream music from my phone on LAN.

But that depends on your library size.
Also... many memory cards seem to have terrible random access speed (and sadly that's something you can't know before buying it), so the initial scan may take a few minutes.

Where/how to efficiently download music in bulk?

I have a relatively large collection of songs I downloaded from YouTube, one-by-one, on my Android phone. I would like to download a lot more of the songs I like, with correct metadata and without having to manually edit the album cover art, artist, and more, on my Windows PC....

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Find the albums you want to download on Tidal, copy the album URL, and paste it here: https://doubledouble.top/

You'll get the correct metadata, including lyrics!
But sure, there are drawbacks. Not that many people can download music at once, so you get this:
https://i.imgur.com/luscTjP.jpeg

Don't worry, it's usually not stuck, but that number just won't update.

Alternatively, look at Soulseek. A P2P music sharing platform.

For both cases, I recommend checking the files with Spek. It's possible someone even took a 160kbps MP3 and converted it to 24-bit 192kHz FLAC.
You'll need to find how the spectrum looks for different lossy codecs at different bitrates to approximately see what you're looking for (specific cut-off frequencies and shelving). And sometimes it may be confusing due to how the songs are mastered.
You decide if you care. Probably not since you were ripping songs from YouTube.

(can’t pick the server but get one assigned at random, might need to restart to get one in a useful location)

Oh, you absolutely can. You can download Wireguard or OpenVPN configs for specific servers even with free tier.
On Android I use: https://github.com/schwabe/ics-openvpn

Though they don't let you select servers in Romania and Poland. Perhaps they just forgot to update the download page.

And as of recently Poland and Romania:

They also have Shadowsocks proxies and SSH tunneling to help circumvent some blocking.

I hope Slackware 15 doesn't still recommend ext2 for being "fast and stable" like Slackware 14 did, so at least until the start of 2022.

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Same. I should have gotten a 512GB Micro SD. "I could never use that much storage." Yeah, I could.

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I wish SD Cards also had some specifications for random access speed.

I used to have a UHS-I SanDisk card which felt much faster than my current UHS-III Samsung card. It's really evident when searching through the storage, waiting for photo thumbnails to cache, etc..

I am not sure whether to go for a UHS-I SanDisk or UHS-III Samsung next. That SanDisk might not handle higher bitrate 4K.

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

and the OS

PinePhone?

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Me. I am basically trying to squeeze the desktop ^(PC)^ out of my phone, so there's a lot of "unnecessary" stuff.

For example, I am currently deciding whether to keep the 110GB of DVD ISO files which I can stream from my phone using VLC (on client side) which are served by nginx server from my phone (this way I still get all menus, just like with a physical DVD) or delete it and replace it with equally sized 110GB EN Wikipedia maxi .zim package, install kiwix-tools on Termux and set up nginx on Termux to serve as revese proxy to kiwix-serve so I could also host a mirror of the whole English Wikipedia, including (downscaled) images on my phone. I guess that sounds cooler than DVDs.
Or I should get a 512GB SD card and keep both.
I can't afford 1TB one.

But yeah, that's just one example. My 256GB SD card is about to pop while my video and music collection (The latter of which which is also served using Navidrome server in Termux 🙂. For videos I just use nginx with material fancyindex theme.) keeps growing.
I already have to keep some stuff on phone's internal storage.

Termux is godsent. Otherwise I'd absolutely have to get a PinePhone as I couldn't live with something as locked down as Android or even iOS without a nice terminal emulator.
Alternatively, I could benefit from pocket-sized passively cooled laptop.

Dont forget to play around with grub while its like this. Tab completion works great, try ‘(’ the press tab to maybe see your disks as grub sees them.

Is this a joke like sudo rm -rf --no-preserve-root / to speed up the PC? Because it kinda sounds that way.

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Note: If update-grub isn't present, it's fine as it's basically just a short script for grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Firefox failing several privacy tests out-of-the-box, according to Brave article ( lemmy.world )

I understand firefox is free software and greatly customisable. I think forks like LibreWolf are fantastic. But I believe the FOSS community needs to be more critical of mozilla. They haven't been the sharpest tool in the drawer for a while......
