That number was only for random write performance. And if you have an SSD that supports TCG Opal and eDrive standard (IEEE-1667) for hardware based bitlocker encrytion then there is no negative speed impact.

Interesting factoid from that article is that a crackdown in Japan has seen a two-thirds decrease in piracy over from 2021 to 2023, which is very substantial. They then go on to say that piracy globally went up 6.7% in 2023 compared to 2022, so I guess Japan is an anomaly.

It depends what you are watching it on I suppose. If you're streaming content on a phone, then 480p is probably acceptable to most people. But if your connection can support a higher resolution without buffering issues, then why wouldn't you? Especially if you're watching something on a TV or large monitor, it'll look terrible in 480p.

Edit: I'm assuming when I said "why wouldn't you?" that you have unlimited data. Obviously if you have a data cap then that's a different story.

Flatworm7591 Mod ,
@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Don't know why you think you know where I live. And you seem to have completely missed the disclaimer where I said "Obviously if you have a data cap then that’s a different story."

And just FYI, for areas with a decent internet network, whether in the city or not, your data use doesn't impact your neighbors' bandwidth in any meaningful way, assuming your ISP isn't massively over-subscribed. I mean all ISPs are oversubscribed to some extent, but then most people aren't download 24/7, so they typically size the 'pipe' to accommodate peak combined usage.

I'm perfectly well aware that if your local ISP's network is dogshit then this might be more of an issue. That's why they typically have data caps in those areas to discourage bandwidth usage. If you don't have a bandwidth cap then it's really the responsibility of your ISP to provide enough bandwidth for everyone to enjoy. You want to go around ranting at people for watching HD movies, go right ahead, see what happens. Try ranting at your ISP - it might be more effective.

The short answer: if you are particularly concerned about anonymity, then yes, enable it AND use a VPN. But be aware some people may consider this leeching, because anonymous mode may compromise your ability to upload (and download) to some extent. But there are some circumstances in which this is entirely justified.

Public tracker scenario

For most people using public trackers, just a VPN without anonymous mode is fine and recommended, and gives you the maximum speeds in this scenario, while giving you an adequate level of protection from your ISP (if configured correctly). If you do enable anonymous mode, then you'll likely find your upload/download speeds are slower, mainly because DHT & uPnP are typically disabled. And anonymous mode without a VPN is NOT recommended.

WARNING: anonymous mode doesn't provide strong privacy guarantees on its own. If you are concerned about legal authorities and copyright trouble, for example, consider using a VPN instead (or in addition to it).

Private tracker scenario

If you are using private trackers then you would usually not be using a VPN or anonymous mode because many of them explicitly ban such things so they can track your download/upload ratios server-side against your IP address to ensure you are following their policies. While some private trackers allow exceptions to this (e.g., you may be able to get a dedicated VPN IP address whitelisted for your account after signup), many don't.

I'm not claiming to be any great expert on this topic, and so this is just my general-level understanding. If anyone wants to contribute any useful expert info or to correct anything I may have wrong here, please feel free to comment.

@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Okay, that's useful additional info, I figured I was probably a bit out of date on the technical details :p

Flatworm7591 Mod ,
@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I think it's generally recommended if you are security conscious to manually forward ports rather than allow uPnP to be enabled on your router. There's been cases where IoT devices or apps can open sensitive ports to your network without your knowledge. And the uPnP protocol itself was found to be flawed a few years ago: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/06/upnp-flaw-exposes-millions-of-network-devices-to-attacks-over-the-internet/

Çadırcı reported his findings to the Open Connectivity Foundation, which maintains the UPnP protocol, and the foundation has updated the underlying specification to fix the flaw. Users can check with developers and manufacturers to find out if or when a patch will be available. A significant percentage of IoT devices never receive updates from manufacturers, which means the vulnerability will live on for some time to come.

But you know, it depends on your risk profile. For most people, it's probably fine. Depends how paranoid you want to get.

Binding your VPN connection to qbittorrent is a good idea, for sure, if you use a VPN. I usually keep DHT enabled with a bound VPN connection and a manually forwarded port using Proton VPN. I'm going to try out anonymous mode to see if it affects speeds any, since it looks like it doesn't impact uploads or connections any more. That's a bonus :)

Sonarr is definitely brilliant for this, but it's best with a Usenet account. You can customise your preferences so it will only download x265 with 5.1 audio at a given bitrate, for example, and this can be set on a per series basis if you want. It'll also download any new episodes that are posted automatically and move them into your media folder, depending on how you set it up. It works best for more recent shows, older series tend to be a bit spotty due to takedowns.

Steam Less Games??

I am in search for a game but can only find it on Steam. I did find someone on CS who had the game build that could launch without Steam but the link is long expired... Do you guys know where it is possible to find Steam less games?? I really don't want to download Steam just to play 1 game on my laptop.

Flatworm7591 Mod ,

Check the games megathread for a curated list of pirated game sources. If you can't find what you are looking for after going through that list, then the game probably isn't cracked (yet).

Flatworm7591 Mod ,
@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ok, since it's a free game, you can post the title so someone might be able to help you locate a non-steam version. But don't get your hopes up - it may simply be unavailable.

Flatworm7591 Mod ,
@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Let's not jump to conclusions here. We do have a rule against requesting specific titles, but if it's a free title anyway then I think it's not such a big deal in this particular case.

Flatworm7591 Mod ,
@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Oh ok. According to some random on the dev’s website forum for the game, it relies on steam networking to run properly, so you might be shit outta luck. The softonic listing just redirects to steam.

I get your point, but to be honest, we don't usually have so many external news stories posted on the same day - it's usually more of a mix. If it gets excessive, I'll take another look at it because I agree it is a bit "low effort". I appreciate your feedback.

Also, remember that everyone's got different preferences for content. E.g., some people really hate memes, but they often get the most upvotes, so a lot of people obviously enjoy them. Fact is, however we moderate the content, it will never suit everyone's tastes 100%.

What's the issue exactly? People pirate for different reasons. We get it, you pirate because you feel like it. You do you. Some people pirate because they can't afford it, or something isn't legally available in their area, or as a protest about greedflation, etc. The high seas welcome all sailors, whatever their motivations, so long as they don't harass their fellow pirates.

By the way, these comments are fucking hilarious guys.

Just a quick update, lemmy.world has posted an update that explains their decision here: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/16795373

TLDR is that the person who removed the community is fairly new to the mod team and didn't realize there was a bit of a history to this situation. Also, looks like they are sticking with the decision this time around though.

Please don't harass the lemmy.world admins/mods though - if you don't like the situation you are free to register here or on another instance. And if you aren't a lemmy.world user, then this doesn't affect you at all.

Places to watch UK tv

Some shows in UK are free to watch but you need to create an account in their webpage and you usually need a physical address (plus they have ads but maybe those I can skip). I don't live in the UK, so I'm unsure how to watch those shows. Torrents are extremely hard to find, even more of good quality. Does someone have some...

Flatworm7591 Mod ,
@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Another good option is to use something similar to Smart DNS Proxy to bypass geo-blocking by UK (and other) TV channels. I've been using it for years with no issues. There is some configuration involved, but it's not too complicated. You may also have to change you system clock to a UK timezone for the BBC, since they sometimes check for that. I wouldn't recommend using their DNS service for any other purpose though, since there are no privacy guarantees.

IMO most VPNs simply can't keep up with their IP addresses being quickly blocked by UK TV websites, so they are very hit and miss for that particular use case. Plus it's not their necessarily their core business, so they don't put so much effort into circumventing geoblocking. You might find one that will work, but it will often be blocked in a few days or weeks. But your mileage may vary & you may get lucky.

No problem. In that case, you could use something like sonarr to subscribe to a specific show and have it download automatically when a new episode is available. It's great for quality of life as everything happens automatically after the initial setup, and of course, you will avoid ads this way. There are plenty of guides on how to set up an *arr stack if you do a quick web search.

It’s usually recommended to completely uninstall any previous versions of Adobe software beforehand, and as a precaution you can/should also use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to remove all traces that may be left behind. After that, perform a reboot and then reinstall the m0nkrus package. I haven’t installed that particular collection myself, so it’s possible it’s an error, but m0nkrus’ à la carte apps usually work without any major issues.

I’d also recommend reading this wiki for some alternative activation methods and tips in case you can’t get it working.

I think because people may have added additional filters manually that might trigger the ad block detection, but that’s just a guess. The guide was written by the uBlock Origin developers so I assume they have a reason for that step. But you can try without that step, it might well still work, especially in stock configuration.
