There is "Oscilloscope" which can show frequencies and their intensity

Looking for a FOSS Speedometer and Map

It's about time to start tending the pastures again and I'm looking for something that can accurately depict speed logged on the device (android smart phone) along with possibly a map overlay of where I've already been. I think something like a workout/cycling tracker would work if someone can recommend a good one that logs the...

FitoTrack is a nice open source fitness tracker which shows the path on OpenStreetMap background. It logs position and speed data.

You can create a custom workout which shows you the current speed instead of average.

https://f-droid.org/packages/de.tadris.fitness/

What do you actually need it for?

redd ,
@redd@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

FitoTrack may be suitable for that.

If the Map is not fitting totally you can even correct it on OpenStreetMap.org by yourself

  1. Easier installation.
  2. Mint configuration of desktop settings
  3. Mint tools (Warpinator, Hypnotix)

But where to get the AppImages from? Who’s maintaining? How to do Security Vulnerality Tracking for them?

Is it safe to clear ~/.cache/mozilla/ while Firefox is running?

redd ,
@redd@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I always felt that there should be some user directory like /tmp/ which will be wiped regularly.

redd ,
@redd@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

So OP’s headline should be saying instead: Reminder to CHECK your ~/.cache folder every now and then

redd ,
@redd@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

not necessarily during runtime

redd ,
@redd@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Because some users experienced accidential grows like OP had 160 Gbyte. So general advice for linux users can be stated as: Check your ~/.cache every now and then

Critical systems/servers shall better be monitored as you suggest.

I don’t get your point. Why should somebody do this every day?

As the experience from other users in this thread, it seems not extremely rare to have an overgrown ~/.cache/ folder. So checking it from time to time is a good advice. If we all do this for a time, and create bug tickets for software which is not cleaning up. Then this problem will hopefully go away with future software releases.

That doesn't help outside of home. When we are in an untrusted network then the DNS mess makes us vulnerable for spoofing attacks.

Does it also follow the rule to not allow closed source API? (Notification,Location,…)

Does anyone actually successfully use OSMAnd or Organic Maps for navigation consistently?

I ask because I have tried both and neither consistently find destinations I need, and when they do, they don’t route me there in the fastest or most efficient way possible. My first experience with Organic Maps, for instance, tried to turn what was usually a 4 hour drive into a nearly 6 hour drive. I used Google Maps to get...

If you have some spare time you could start adding the missing house numbers. Easiest way is using StreetComplete on Android (f-droid.org/en/…/de.westnordost.streetcomplete/)

redd ,
@redd@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

What is wrong with it? (I have no clue, never used it)

Isnt Remmina a client only? Or can it be configured to autolaunch a VNC/RDP server?

redd ,
@redd@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Which server are you using on linux? How did you configure autostart?

redd ,
@redd@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I dont know how to mount external drives on Bash without root privilegues. On the Desktop environment it can be done by just clicking without root password.

redd ,
@redd@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

that one does support autostart?

wow its amazing how many Operating Systems Freetube supports. I tried AppImage on Linux Mint. Download. Set execution bit. Starting. Start Watching! Amazing!

Thanks for all your discussions. All your experiences are very helpful for me. Now here is my top list and reasons:

  1. Cinnamon (most familiar and very stable for me)
  2. XFCE (I like the responseness and lightweightness)
  3. MATE (stable and reliable)
  4. KDE (I like the configurability, but unfortunately I experienced a lot of instabilities and accidents)
  5. Gnome (I don’t like the new UI concept. When I tried it, it was laggy and non-responsive)

Out of this list:

  • I3 (only head good things, but never tried it on my own installation)
  • Cosmic (first time I heard about today)
  • Budgie (first time I heard about today)

Tried it on VM and Backup Notebooks. Especially on old Notebooks its hardly usable.

Anybody have good guides on repurposing old 32bit laptops?

I have this 11 year old oddly resistant Pentium laptop and I’m thinking of turning it into a reading/light-programming tool. It used to run great back in the day but modern software has gotten so bloated that it can barely run GNOME with Firefox, so I was thinking of sticking to command line only. Is there anything specific I...

Void seems cool.

But battery might be important since a lot of laptops will not start if the batttery is missing or has undervoltage. General advise would therefore be to not discharge the battery to a bare mininum but to keep it always at least 20-30% charged. Especially when Laptop is not used for longer time.
