History is full of companies who went under because they didn't analyze and predict what would hurt their bottom line...

mindlight ,

What value has an anonymous assurance do you mean?

mindlight ,

Interesting.
Do you have links that support your claims that I can read up on?

mindlight ,

That chart doesn't say anything about system resource usage.

Edit: found the performance chart now. Still no explanation on what performance tests(more than two sentences) they performed and how the scoring was applied.

Anti malware that can detect cracks and flag them as so, but can also distinguish from trojact and malware? Also, that can be configured to don't use too many resources when not required

I was thinking, mbam, have you got other suggestions for Windows 10? Also, is there a good setup for when I'm running games I bought, and I don't need active scanning of threats? (Especially for legit games that use resources intensively)

mindlight ,

You don't want to have any active scanning for threats, like antivirus?
If so, why?

mindlight ,

If your computer is network connected you really really need antimalware running.
In theory, a game server could be exploited and controlled to inject malware into game clients ( = you playing online).

If you use a browser to access internet, there has been malware infected ads that infect your computer when you visit legitimate web sites.

If you get infected, the malware most likely won't do anything that makes you notice it. It all depends what the purpose of the malware is.

Ransomware?
Then it stays hidden until it has encrypted all your files and then it pops up telling you to pay or you won't be able to use your computer.

Collecting useful passwords? Getting full access to your Steam account is nice. Got some awesome weapons and armor in the MMORPG you play? That's something they theoretically would script to be able to steal from you.

Or maybe the malware just stays hidden for now, contacting it's control center now and then to see if there is any instructions.

Malware is business. The people behind it are businessmen and you are part of what they sell.

If you have a fairly modern computer there shouldn't be that much impact on the performance.

mindlight ,

Yes. But the discussion was about not running any since it killed performance.

mindlight ,

I fully agree.

But my main point was that they're taking an extreme risk if they're running without active antivirus and access the network in one or another way.

mindlight ,

Either you're just ignorant or your working in the Russian malware industry.

Remote exploits doesn't have anything to do with you running any infected executables. It's about vulnerabilities in executables that you are running.
Read up on the zx vulnerability or the log4j vulnerability.

One really really old attack vector is a buffer overflow attack.
For example, if you're running a clean VLC to watch a movie and your VLC is older than version 3.0.12 you're at risk.
The video file, that you "purchased" on PirateBay, could have been manipulated to crash VLC and force VLC run a specific payload in the video file.
If that payload is ransomware it's game over for you.

Yeah, just like wearing a seatbelt doesn't guarantee that you don't get injured, antivirus doesn't guarantee that your computer won't get infected.

But there's no doubt about the usefulness of both seatbelt and antivirus.

mindlight , (edited )

I explained what a remote exploit was and gave examples of remote exploits.

Are you claiming that antivirus isn't able to detect malware entering through an remote exploit?

mindlight ,

Yeah, that was you continuing to show how inexperienced you are.

For a remote exploit to work the computer or device has to expose ports to the network your computer is connected to.

"Remote" means that the vulnerability does not require local access.
So if your friend connects his infected device to your wifi, all devices connected to the same network essentially are at risk, depending on what's listening on the devices and what vulnerabilities they have.

Your idea about avoiding bad websites is ridiculous. History is full of examples where third party ads had been created to infect one way or another. That's ads that users on legitimate site were exposed to.
That's just one little example. There have been numerous examples of malicious sleeping JavaScript code that suddenly wakes up and contacts it's command-and-control server and then download malicious JavaScript code to unknowing site visitors.

Furthermore, you didn't understand my question. Of course antivirus is able to stop malware it recognizes that enters through a remote exploit.
The user with antivirus would at least have a chance of knowing that something was up each time and attempt to infect was made.

You on the other hand would sit there clueless with your little zombie computer and laugh at all them script kiddies.

But hey...
You just continue trying to infect others around you with bad security advice and have a good day. I'm outta here.

mindlight ,

If you want to promote your position - and it may not please someone and that is normal in a democratic society - take responsibility. What are you afraid to say who you are?

While I understand the problems the propaganda machines of Russia and China (among other) causes, this here is some stupid shit

Try to criticize Putin openly while living in Russia, speak up for the freedom to love and have sex with whoever you want in Uganda or publish pictures of Muhammad as a dog and sign all of it with your name and see what will happen.

Anonymity is a double edged sword. While being "nice to have" in a democracy it's a "must have" in a dictatorship.

mindlight ,

I don't have the answer your looking for but maybe a pointer for where to look and what to look for ..

What you want is essentially done in two steps.

  1. Optical Character Recognition - an image consists of pixels. There is no text, just pixels. You need a program that can see the difference between pixels forming an A and an B. Tesseract is a very competent program for this and it's free. However, it's command line only but I know there are GUI applications based on Tesseract.

  2. Translate text from one language to another - maybe Dialect?

mindlight ,

Oh.... The good old MFM disks.... Those were the days
...

mindlight ,

Nope. No ISO layout = no buy. I hate that thin ugly Return key.

mindlight ,

I'm pretty sure no one wants you to pay for something you don't appreciate.

You have many other options. Good luck.

mindlight ,

It's concerning that you insinuate that 20 year old hardware just works in Linux.

Just because a 20 year old sound card happens to work in your favorite Linux distro doesn't in any way mean that it will work forever or that there are drivers for all 20 year old soundcards.

Where does it say that it's not allowed to create a Windows driver for a 20 year old soundcard?

mindlight ,

So if phones essentially are BLE beacons I fail how Apple/Google plan to detect unwanted trackers.

All I have to do is register a new playstore account and use that to track a specific tag/phone.

Someone care to explain what I'm missing here?

mindlight ,

So Intel, Apple, every other company that develops ARM based processors, AMD and Nvidia has just missed this technology ?

We're talking about trillions of dollars in just R'n'D investments and this technology just flew under the radar?

If it sounds too good to be true, it is probably too good to be true.

mindlight ,

You want to have both hands free while moving or an extra dose of speed to go faster? With the Mobility Plus Package you can activate a variety of clever additional functions in the Mobility App.

With the Mobility Plus Package you can increase the support speed from 6 km/h to 8,5 km/h and benefit from the Cruise Mode that allows you to keep a permanent speed with only one deflection on the push rim.

Holy fuck!?!? The wheelchair is actually actively crippled if you don't pay?

If you are able to crack software, this is the time to stand up and do actual real good for humanity !

This makes me so angry.

mindlight ,

If you're not tech savvy enough to get the software running under for example Wine, you might be better off with Windows.
Trying to get support from the vendor for anything not Windows will not be easy if even possible.

Anyways, If you're still going for Linux, I guess that Wine is what you're looking for.

mindlight ,

Normally it's not lack of Windows compatibility breaking the use of an application with wine, it's the frameworks and libraries the application was built with/need to have access to.

So check what additional libraries and stuff your application have as a prerequisite.
Visual C 2005? 2010? DotNet framework? Which version? And so on.

When you know what the application needs, then you can Google for "wine DotNet 4.5" (just an example) to get a feeling what problems people had and how they solved it.

Essentially wine needs to know where to find them when you start your application with/in wine.

Also, if your application uses MSSQL Express or similar, you might be out of luck. So if that's the case you should start googling on how to get that running (if even possible) before installing.

Good luck, be stubborn and make sure to have fun. There's a lot you'll learn in this adventure of yours that will come in handy again and again in the future.

mindlight ,

To be honest, it was ages ago I started up wine so I'm the wrong person to ask.

I'm a dual booter, best of two worlds, full support from vendors and no compatibility problems is my preferred way

mindlight ,

The statistics seem to be based on User Agent. A lot of people"fake" their user agent to avoid fingerprinting and other things.

I myself used to do it when I wanted to download Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft.
If your UA said anything Windows you were forced to use download Microsoft USB Tool. If it said Linux you got a direct link to the ISO.

mindlight ,

Aaaah... Finally a reason for me to root my phone!

As someone who’s been writing for close to ten years now, I would tend to think I would get paid at this point. Or, at least write for a site that would. I can’t begin to describe in words how frustrating and unfair it’s been to see websites that are “younger” than me become so successful that they’re able to write for their site as a full-time job in just one year.

This is a truth I've seen again and again throughout my career (started my career in IT in the 90's).
Just because you're awesome at something doesn't guarantee you a fat bank account.
The people who most often succeed are the ones that have at least some knowledge of a subject and some understanding of how business work.

It doesn't mean anything that you're the best at what you do if you don't know how to get the customer to sign the agreement.

mindlight , (edited )

I'm a paying customer and I've never had this problem.

mindlight ,

If there's a voltage regulator in there, make sure that it doesn't suffer from the same problem as later computers from CBM did.
If it does, it will fry the board.

mindlight ,

In Commodore 64 there is a short circuit in the voltage regulator (9V to 5V) after +20 years that sends more than 5V into the 5V line on the system board. Effectively getting one or more essential chips and the computer becomes a desk ornament and a memory from forgotten times.

I would disconnect the power from the system board, connect power and measure the voltage with a multimeter.
Might sound like a lot of work but it can be the difference between a working vintage experience and a dead vintage experience.

I had a look at the pictures and the capacitors look fine. There is a known problem with "swollen capacitors". Old things didn't work like they used to.
If they are not cylindrical and do not have a flat top they might need to be replaced.

I'm not saying you have to do all this work, I'm just saying that these two things are known problems in some vintage computers.

mindlight ,

The problem is that the vast majority of end users prefer apps over websites.
They have no clue whatsoever that 99% of all apps are essentially just wrapped websites.

Since Mozilla has been unable to find a viable business model (No, relying on Google handouts is not a viable business model) I fear that there is only one possible future and a free web is not part of it.

Along with the termination of perpetual licensing, Broadcom has also decided to discontinue the Free ESXi Hypervisor, marking it as EOGA (End of General Availability).

Lasting forever, or for an indefinitely long time.

Hello ProxMox here I come!

Strange how much Google used to loooove open source when it hurt Microsoft....

Google supporting an open source project ain't a life raft....

It's a warning sign.

mindlight ,

Microsoft office has been able to open odt files since 2010.

Furthermore, LibreOffice does not always create/save files 100% compatible with MSO.
I used to use Libre office because free.
Word documents I have created/edited in LibreOffice were always a little broken layout wise when the document is opened in Word.

Whether it is because LibreOffice does a shitty job converting to docx when saving, Microsoft added in some anti competitor shit in Word or that the docx standard is vague is a discussion for another time.

mindlight ,

This!

Oh good I hate that tiny little enter key.

Is decentralised federated social media over engineered?

Can't get this brain fart out of my head.

What would the simplest, FOSS, alternative look like and would it be worth it?

Quick thoughts:

  • FOSS platforms intended to be big single servers, but dedicated to ...
  • Shared/Single Sign On
  • Easy cross posting
  • Enabling and building universal Multi-platform clients.
  • Unlike email, supporting small servers

No duplication/federation/protocol required, just software.

@fediverse

mindlight ,

Single Sign On doesn't mean that "American BigTech Servers" have to be used.

Essentially, for the users, it means that an account for site A can be used to login on site B because site A and site B trust each other.

A concept to Google if one wants to know more is "federated login".

mindlight ,

I still code with the mindset of "I need my software to be good or my clients will leave."

Google still does this.
As you probably already know, users aren't clients. Users are products.

mindlight ,

It’s like I’m on Reddit again. So sick of hearing this tired complaint over and over to free upvotes.

mindlight ,

Ok. Let’s be real now. Android without Google Play Services is not something that is even remotely useful for 99.99999999% of the Android users that is out there. Furthermore, if one or two of those users are your friends, then Google most likely keeps track of you quite ok anyways.

Nevertheless, good for you managing to avoid all big social media, relevant messaging apps, dating apps, commercial services apps and apps using Google Play Services.

mindlight ,

No.

It’s a container for image data developed by Moving Picture Experts Group (“MPEG”, try to guess what else they have created).

While there are some compatibility issues between vendors HEIC still offers a greater set of features as compared to fx JFIF (you probably know it as JPEG/JPG.

Apple was one of the early adopters (2017) and (as usual?) the industry has followed. Microsoft wants money for the codec in Windows and that’s probably one of the reasons why it’s not commonly used…yet.

mindlight ,

What device/ Operating System are you trying to watch the images on?

mindlight ,

I replied to a statement about Heif being an Apple image format. It is not.

Furthermore, HEIF is something that most major mobile device vendors support. Some, like Samsung, even sets it as default on some of their devices. So the whole “Apple always supporting not open standards” is just tiresome at this point.

99.999% of all Android users are defacto locked in by Google. Yes, Android might be open but Play services are not. Google works hard to lock in Android users.

At least Apple are open and honest about locking in iOS users.

mindlight ,

You can set the camera to store the pictures as JPEG. I am happy with JPEG for my holiday photos. Just check that you have the best quality setting since JPEG uses lossy compression.

While HEIF is not the doomsday thing some describes it as, it currently is somewhat problematic.

There are for example problems, originating in differences in implementation between different hardware vendors, with 10-bit and HDR.

Does Bcachefs come with any guarantees regarding my wife’s wellbeing?

If not, I’m definitively sticking with my OpenZFS.
