I don't even see downvotes or the downvote button on mine. Which is fine. If I disagree with someone I'll do it via a comment. Downvoting is just lazy.

lightnsfw ,

No one needs search queries from the web in their start menu. If I want to search the web I'll use a web browser.

lightnsfw ,

When I press the winkey and search (which is the most efficient way to search the start menu) I get web search shit in the results. This is not desirable.

Do you use the device you torrent on for personal things as well?

I'm just curious as I've permanently dedicated my laptop to torrenting. I've been too nervous to install anything but the VPN and Firefox on it. Now, I'm curious to mess around with Linux some more, which is what I use on it, but I can't fully test out what all I can do with it without signing into accounts....

lightnsfw ,

Technically yes. I have all my piracy stuff running in a VM on my desktop.

lightnsfw ,

I haven't bought a new phone since I got my LG V20. Lack of headphone jack is among many reasons. There's nothing on the market that has all the features it does or even new features that make up for what I would be giving up if I got a new phone. I fear the day when I'm forced to get a new phone because it gets too out dated for my work apps.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I'm working on a some materials for a class wherein I'll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we're including a section we're calling "foot guns". Basically it's ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

lightnsfw ,

this one used to fuck me up sooooo much.

lightnsfw ,

I like that there's a (small) barrier to entry here. Keeps out the riff raff.

lightnsfw ,

You can get 3.5mm to (whatever usb port) that will as far as I know work in every phone. Just because it doesn’t have a dedicated port doesn’t mean you can’t wire in your headphones.

not if you want to charge it as well.

Lol, bring on your down votes. I bet if you surveyed a hundred random people on the street if they really want a headphone port on your phone and are committed to using it you’d get less than ten people, definitely less than 20. It’s not realistic to support every legacy hardware function on a modern device because a few tech enthusiasts want it, especially when there’s a very easy way to support it.

If you're the only option with a headphone jack that's a guaranteed 10% of the market buying your device. More if you also include other things tech enthusiasts want that are no longer widely available.

lightnsfw ,

Simply put, if companies determined the market need for 3.5mm port was valuable enough they’d leave it on there.

The reason it's not "valuable" is that they want to force people to buy expensive earbuds every year when they crap out. This is demonstrated by the fact that none of these phones that have removed it have added anything new in it's place and they've only gotten more expensive. Practically every phone on the market is just a copycat phone, camera, social media browsing device. Maybe a few have a stylus. The only thing that differentiates them is specs. My 6 year old phone has more features than anything available today and I dread finally reaching the point where my work apps stop functioning due to it's age and I have to downgrade to some garbage that can't do half the things I used to.

lightnsfw ,

Their point was that archive.org is going to get fucked in court.

lightnsfw ,

I don't see anything pro IP in their comment. They just stated the reality of the situation.

lightnsfw ,

Just cut up the model into a million smaller parts and post them on thingiverse so everyone on that site that already has a 3d printer can print one out and mail it to baltimore. EZ

lightnsfw ,

A random vpn in asia won't sue me for torrenting.

lightnsfw ,

Sure it comes off as aggressive ultimatums, but when I worked on New Jersey I saw numerous arguments between passionate coders who really cared about their work and spoke on these loud voices with aggressive gesticulations and gestures, and it was frightening. But, when you took apart the arguments, it was all about “the code” this, and “the standard” that, and very little “you suck” and “you’re dumb”. And, when the argument was settled, these passionate people were still friends.

I used to work for a guy like that. He was aware of how a lot of people perceived him and was working on it but it never really bothered me when he slipped because like you said it wasn't a personal attack, he was just trying to make us get the work done to his standards. There were multiple times he would come to me and apologize after we finished something and I was just like "well you were right so I'm not really worried about it".

lightnsfw ,

Therapy is expensive, I'd have to make appointments, leave my home during my free time, talk about myself to someone, and probably won't help because my problems are external. No thanks.

Buying a new laptop and installing an OS is a relatively simple and inexpensive process that is actually rewarding.

lightnsfw ,

Okay so multiply all the other problems I listed by how many therapists I have to try and no they can't solve my problems unless they're gonna buy me a house or pay off my debts or something so I can actually get ahead financially.

lightnsfw ,

No, the steps would probably be more along the lines of refreshing your resume, maybe setting up an appointment to have it professionally reviewed, getting a habit of applying for jobs going, stuff that materially contributes to having more money. A therapist might tell you that overthrowing the rich is a little too vague a plan to actually act on.

So the solution the therapist has is to hire a career counselor? That's not them solving anything, that's them passing the buck to someone else that will cost me even more money and time. Beside the fact that I already know how to ladder climb and am currently in a position that pays well above what most of my peers are making and is above the credentials I have on paper so I have to rely on networking for any new opportunities (which again i'm doing better than most of my network so they don't have a lot to offer at this point). There really isn't anywhere for me to go up from here without moving to a place that is even more expensive to live.

The real issue is that inflation is out of control and housing is too expensive. My best bet of ever owning a home is waiting for my parents to die and inherit theirs and that thing is shitty new construction that was slapped together as quickly and cheaply as possible and will probably be falling apart by then.

lightnsfw ,

By credentials I mean a degree and experience with particular tasks/applications. I can't just change that on my resume if I don't have it.

lightnsfw ,

Yes I liked having pictures of my dead pets and relatives from 10 years ago but I wasn’t going to ever look at them again. I have my memories and that’s enough.

I used to think like this but I've found that going through those old pictures is a good way to bring up memories you wouldn't otherwise think about again. I like to do that when I'm in a funk and it really helps to clear my head of nasty emotions.

lightnsfw ,

Keep in mind that all the people who are just happily going about their day to day with it and not having issues are probably not posting. The only reason most people make posts is to complain about something or get assistance troubleshooting an issue. It also really depends on what all you want to do with it.

lightnsfw ,

It's Microsoft. There's always more bugs on the way.

How do I properly resize my LVM partitions when it is inside LUKS?

Do I have to boot in a USB to do it or can it be done while the crypt is open/being used? I need to resize my root partition.

Don't worry I roasted his family and friends too so they won't be sad!

lightnsfw ,

I've been finding this out at work recently. Got lazy and started doing most of my conversations via teams instead of email and now having to find shit from like a year ago is practically impossible. Even some conversations I know contained what I'm looking for just have random gaps where posts have disappeared.

lightnsfw ,

I think discord is great for the technical support side of things. It gives you a chance to talk through a problem in real time with someone more knowledgeable and ask follow up questions without waiting hours for a reply lile frequently happens in support forums. That being said it should absolutely not be the repository for documentation.

lightnsfw ,

I would argue that is the point of having an FAQ/Examples in your documentation. Ideally someone would stop their first before asking clarification questions in the discord. Admittedly a lot of people are just going to go straight to asking questions but personally that's not really been something I've ever really minded. Some people just learn better that way and it's unusual for one of these discord channels to be so busy that repeat questions are drowning others out.

lightnsfw ,

The closest one I've found to what I'm looking for in a note taking app is Obsidian. Really it kind of set the standard of what I need with how efficient it is to use. The only issue is syncing to my phone and tablet. I'm using Nextcloud and so far have only been able to get "read" access on my mobile devices. If I try to create/edit a note it gives me access errors that I haven't found a way around. This isn't a huge problem because I mostly reference notes on the devices anyway and am not making changes to them. Mobile note taking is typically done in my physical pocket notebook anyway.

Are there any Windows-exclusive programs you use?

I had to test/fix something at work and I set up a Windows VM because it was a bug specific to Windows users. Once I was done, I thought, “Maybe I should keep this VM for something.” but I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t a game (which probably wouldn’t work well in a VM anyway) or some super specific enterprise...

lightnsfw ,

Hell, it's a bit laggy in Windows so that might not even be a Wine problem.

lightnsfw ,

I like WSL for what it is. My desktop is still Windows. I'm looking to switch but still have a lot to figure out before I can do that and not a lot of time to dig into it (part of why I'm reading this thread is for ideas).

lightnsfw ,

"oh, right. If I had just pirated this my content wouldn't be delayed by these stupid piracy warnings."

lightnsfw ,

If I could pay a fair price for the product I'm getting off torrents (no drm media files I can use on any device I want) I'd consider it. I buy books off humble bundle like all the time.

lightnsfw ,

After I'm finished doing the same shit over and over again for another 7-800 hours in warframe I'm sure I'll get around to playing some of the games I actually paid money for.

lightnsfw ,

Even if the male:female ratio is off you'll just have to get together with one of your bros and flip a coin to decide who's changing this time.

lightnsfw ,

That's because in real life we don't have any other sentient beings to genocide. There's animals we can extinct of course but it's just not the same :(

I tried, I really did

I've been an IT professional for 20 years now, but I've mainly dealt with Windows. I've worked with Linux servers through out the years, but never had Linux as a daily driver. And I decided it was time to change. I only had 2 requirements. One, I need to be able to use my Nvidia 3080 ti for local LLM and I need to be able to RDP...

lightnsfw ,

“Oh yeah, you want a working system? HERES WHY YOU SHOULDT WANT THAT AND WHY IT IS ACTUALLY A FEATURE THAT ITS NOT WORKING. Noob”

That shit is why I hate Microsoft so much. The whole strength of Linux should be the flexibility to do what you want to do with it. 100% agree with you that Linux isn't there yet but I am certainly trying to get there with it.

lightnsfw ,

I recently had a torrent finish after a year and a half. It wasn't something I was really concerned about but it gave me a nice feeling to know it had finished.

lightnsfw ,

IDK. It was hung up at 70 something % and I never got around to deleting it. Then one day after having long forgotten about it the notification saying it was done popped up and I was like "holy shit!"

lightnsfw ,

What I need is for the people creating problems in my life to get their shit together and fucking stop. No amount of support from others will achieve that.

lightnsfw ,

So tired of people acting like because I shit on Biden I think Trump is better. All of our options are garbage and I'm not going to pretend that isn't the case. Yeah, I voted for Biden and I will again. That doesn't mean I'm happy about it.

lightnsfw ,

When I tried it like 7-8 years ago it crashed pretty much every time I touched a constraint. Was I probably doing something very wrong? Yes, but that made it pretty impossible to learn. Opposed to Fusion360 which just yells at you when you do dumb shit.

lightnsfw ,

Why would the Superbowl need to be rigged for her to do this? Everything the woman does is already reported and televised everywhere.

lightnsfw ,

I get that. What I'm saying is it doesn't matter. She's got media attention 24/7 if she wants to say something. Anyone who would be swayed by her is already listening.

lightnsfw ,

But they don't need the super bowl for that. She could go outside wearing a Biden t-shirt and it'd be plastered all over everyone's screens in 20 minutes. Going to the effort of rigging the Superbowl to get Taylor Swift in front of people is just unnecessary. The work is already done for you.

lightnsfw ,

Why would they give a shit about Taylor Swift's opinion if they're not already aware of her?

lightnsfw ,

Why do people currently give a shit about Taylor Swift’s opinion if they used to be unaware of her?

Because they're morons? She's a manufactured celebrity. Her (or any other celebrity) opinion on politics should mean nothing to anyone.

Wot The Fsck You Say, Spotify? ( lemmy.world )

Edit: A couple times I've said eBook while I actually meant Audiobook. I've learned that Spotify has a 15 hour limit per month for their free 'included in premium' audiobooks. However these are the two books I listened to for free, and even rounding up to 13 hours it doesn't make sense, unless they count accidental chapter skips...

lightnsfw ,

I use the readera app on my android tablet. Haven't had any problems with it yet.

lightnsfw ,

That's most companies buddy.

lightnsfw ,

This has been known for at least a decade at this point. How HP still has a printer business I'll never understand.
