@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id

not called Brad but rather a lad, from Bradford in the UK.

Enjoys breaking apps, escooters, spam rings and sometimes bones, but not my own. That sucks.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. View on remote instance

ladfrombrad Mod ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

No doubt, and there used to be an app called "all for one IR remote" or something like that that I can't find from a cursory skim.

It allowed programming of codes from your existing remotes and also the bonus of using a URI for a IR code which then meant you could fire them off with other apps.

Problem these days is the hardware that supports IR Blasters is controlled by the likes of Xiaomi, and the apps available to use said hardware is limited to in-built system apps :/

@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I'd be curious how many account holders in the UK have actually been prosecuted for copyright infringement.

In nearly two decades with the same ISP (Telewest > Blueyonder > VirginMedia) I've had a grand total of two emails from them with no teeth in it, and still download what I want from public trackers to this day.

I get an actual letter from them? Yay, free toilet paper!

Don't fret.

I'm just waiting for everything they haven't killed to merge onto YouTube

Me and ye both.

Using the "website" YouTube in my mobile browser sucks and I have to disable their "app" because it's a system app for some reason or other, to then allow me to use a better app like Newpipe without their system app popping up in the share menu every time I get an update.

Speaking of updates my Xiaomi just updated to A14, and even thou I have Chrome disabled I now get this....

If you've got decent throughput at home buying a rasp pi 3/4 means you can have your own VPN

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

ladfrombrad ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I had to leave VirginMoney because the lady on the phone told me I needed an iPhone to reset my password (seriously) even after trying with three separate Android devices.

There's no desktop functionality (mobile is king with them) and it amazed me that day I had to use the Current Account Switcher to go to an equally meh banking service.

Sorry state of affairs across all mobile apps to be honest and as seen by the prevalence of MDM and accessing data Vs doing the very same, on a desktop "PC". Why the data is more precious on a mobile device to them is telling.....

at a very low price

This is another thing that makes me curious.

I live up North of the UK where prices are cheaper, wages are lower. Much much lower than the same costs etc down.....south of the very same country.

Things costing less than getting priced up for the sake of it, simply because of geography, is kinda baffling.

ladfrombrad Mod , (edited )
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

All you need to do is pay a bit extra.

Like I said in another comment in here, I find it odd that we need/want to pay more for things that don't actually cost that more but do because some companies can't run the books right (ie: fat cats and excessive profits) and end up with massive corps having to submit a First Gazette Notice.

I had no idea what that meant since I found out last night my company I work for here in the UK, has done just that :/

ladfrombrad Mod , (edited )
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Being a consumer means I don't attribute others ethics, nor ideology, when making a buying decision.

I buy things because I'm a consumer of goods that tries to save myself from having to spend more, to line others greedy pockets though.

If those are my ethics, call me a dirty consumer perhaps? But people getting paid minimum wages whilst people who do nothing other than tell their sales department to up their price "just because" it doesn't come from a certain geography is like chopping your nose off to spite your face IMO.

edit: I found a perfect example of this. Berghaus fleece Vs a Amazon basics, or hell, even a Regatta fleece. Just the badge, and nothing else.

ladfrombrad Mod ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Absolutely!

And when you have a finite amount of money / time left on this planet I uphold my values of buying the best bang for buck.

Whether that's my Xiaomi router, phone, scooter, or even the cheapo Amazon basics fleece the first thing I do is look at the price and not if it comes from a country that others don't like.

I figured out how to make IPTV as easy as using Netflix so you dont have to ( lemmy.myserv.one )

Disclaimer: Obviously this is for educational purposes only. I would personally never use my internet connection for anything illegal at all. I simply tested the below setup then deleted everything out of pure interest to understand how things worked and do not use any IPTV service. I love paying Netflix and other streaming...

ladfrombrad ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I have a few TVHeadend servers running on Rasp Pi's and have noticed some of the newer HD titles broadcast over DVB-T2 has the video stream but actually mute the audio. Frozen Planet on BBC was the most recent one I noticed.

SDTV streams are fine but they now mute the HD streams somehow on certain newer titles 🥺

ladfrombrad ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I prerecord like a minute ahead of the show starting and sound / video are both well.

But what happens is the audio mutes as soon as the starting credits roll. I don't exactly get how they're doing it since my TV's DVB receiver plays it just fine.

I checked my HD recording of the new Attenborough Mammals show, and that did have audio so I'll have to keep an eye ear out for it happening again.

ladfrombrad Mod ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

AP telling me things are not interesting smells like clickbait.

Why the hell did that happen?

ladfrombrad Mod ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Wholly agreed, I even do more than the 3,2,1 backup because of it to a family member's routers which have SMB mounts and a Rasp pi down there with Tailscale on it. So helpful too having my Tailnet down there because it means I can remotely help them out without them even knowing.

Also, the above "must be via cable fanatics" should go and Praise DuARTe for not even using adb push/pull?

Lots and lots of sticker packs.

ladfrombrad ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

To be honest Telegram doesn't ban private groups "for piracy" and only takes out public groups that receive a DMCA.

I think the above user is pointing out a rather fun fact - if you're in some of the many private groups where shit is shared freely.....those wanting to ban it don't like the fact that they can't see in those private groups.

Like, is there any evidence of private groups being monitored by media corps or their lackeys in gov?

ladfrombrad ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah, more my point is I was curious if Telegram has previously taken down private groups Vs public ones (I've seen a fair few of these obviously since they adhere to DMCA requests) but have never seen a private group taken down.

ladfrombrad ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

:)

I make my own thank you very much. Sticker packs are a right of passage to navigation on Telegram. We also have the gif game.

I think we've lasted 20mins of replying in gifs to each other, in context. Is a very hard "game".

We've had a no piracy rule over in the Android subs/communities for years and the funny thing is, by time we ever got to someone trying to post a pirated APK the community themselves tore them a new arsehole.

Easiest rule to enforce when the community will absolutely hiss at you. Love em.

edit: a fun talking point I suppose is YouTube, and its app. We got a lot of people arguing that Newpipe 'was piracy' and I even had many debates with other members/mods about is it, or isn't it piracy?

My view it's a website that you can parse even with other tools like yt-dl, and if Youtube.com wanted to stop use of Newpipe / Revanced whatever they could in the blink of an eye.

Rotating banners on /r/piracy ( lemmy.dbzer0.com )

Hey mates, recently I've developed a tool to use the GenerativeAI on the AI Horde to created random avatars and banners on lemmy. To keep things spicy, I wanted to deploy to rotate the /c/piracy banner daily, as I've done in a bunch of other communities like !stable_diffusion_art and the lemmy.dbzer0.com....

You ever get the feeling for a flowchart?

Someone please make one.

ladfrombrad ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

So let me get this straight.

You're being purposely opaque (aka, those in the knows comment) with sharing information around here?

Wouldn't it be conducive sharing context here instead of a 4 character title most people (will use their preferred search engine) in the first place will have to search for?

ladfrombrad Mod ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I think from some of the comments they're concerned that it won't be a toggleable flag, that at any point, some spooky man from Google or some 3 letter agency can enable and/or override.

At any time. Which is a very fair point?

However, swings and roundabouts from my end likes the idea of being able to recover lost/stolen hardware so I'd like to hear others voices on it.

ladfrombrad ,

I share one of my TVHeadend servers with someone in India so they can watch BBC and other DVB/FTA content without having to jump through hoops/VPN's for the many streaming apps that are restricted to UK only IP's.

Come at me, Channel4?

Court blocks $1 billion copyright ruling that punished ISP for its users’ piracy ( arstechnica.com )

One thing that leaps out at me about this ruling is that courts understand the internet a lot better nowadays. A decade or so ago Sony would have probably gotten away with the argument that Cox profited from the users' piracy; nowadays judges themselves use the internet and are going to go "lolno, they probably would have been...

:) You do know that bot is banned in lemdro.id right?

And to be fair, it is unsolicited bot spam (I miss BotDefense) although it ultimately is up to the admins and mods in this....instance and there is always the possibility of useful bots. Blanket blocking them via your profile seems a bit, meh, e: especially if you want to invoke one which is always the better way?

ladfrombrad , (edited )
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

It was interesting as a concept, but streaming torrents have never been the optimal way

While this is true to some extent, I never had an issue with BitCast (Casted, torrents) until Google didn't like it and banned it (edit: wait, have they unbanned that or is it visible to me because I had it prior installed?), even though they allow other torrent clients such as Flud etc.

Maybe they didn't want Cast™ to be associated with arrrr's but it worked well for me, especially for well seeded seas.

edit II: RIP

is available still to my Google Account because I had it prior. Time to play and see if it works still.

Gotta be honest I've used Syncthing for a while and the forked app too, but yet again gone back to SMB2Sync

I don't know if it's the nerdiness or granular nature of it, but I prefer it and I don't have to worry about the client/device being up to date like you do with Syncthing?

ladfrombrad Mod ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I think you meant to reply to my top level comment and Lemmy can be a little iffy, at the best of times?

But I don't agree that Syncthing is "way easier than using CIFS/SMB. I actually find once you understand how the syncing process is happening and when makes things much more apparent.

Also yay no more worrying about it being off site and fulfilling the 3-2-1 mantra.

I now have a 6+5+4+3+2+1 thanks to two routers with OpenWRT on them off site 🥳

How does your bot grab FLAC’s from Spotify?

A friend of mine said they don’t serve FLAC’s, and it also seems in our testing we broke @deezertogdrivebot and it’s getting rate limited?

ladfrombrad Mod ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

You don’t need to pay a subscription fee for cloud storage when it’s super simple to host your own, and Android allows the mounting of different filesystems too.

SMB on a rasp pi + cheapo storage + Tailscale, all the way to paying £$€ for a dedicated NAS enclosure with as much storage as you can afford also with Tailscale?

Yup, fuck subscription fees.

You also can then use the corporate cloud storage providers like G/ProtonDrive etc to use their free offerings for off site backup of the most important data.

ladfrombrad Mod ,

Funny you mention that, I had the M7/8 like OP and also had one of those Dot Matrix cases for mine which gave you a second screen so to speak. You could even use custom apps with it.

Another thing I bought at the time was one of these for the headphone jack. Never really caught on thou :/

ladfrombrad Mod ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

Aye, me too and like you say it’s hard to not defeat the point of one if you’re unplugging the bloody thing all the time.

The one I’ve got thou did come with three cables of different lengths and for a while I used the short 0.5m at work since I could just jam it in small cargo pants pocket, medium length stored in locker and the longer 3m one at home. Still unplugged the adapter and is now in a drawer…somewhere.

Saying this, they do have the bonus (including that 3.5mm button thing i have above) of making the device more water resistant 👀
