Whats the best Universally usable CRT Monitor for computers all trough the 80s and 90s?

With my little Computer Collection ever growing, I think its time to get myself an actual Monitor to use these Machines. So im wondering, what Monitor has most if not all Connection Types and modes of operation to be compatible with most/ if not all Computer from the 80s till the 90s?...

The Microvitec M1438 is the one I remember always being recommended.

There's also some sort of soft blocking option, which largely hides the instance AIUI but still gives the ability to follow users. This seems like a better option rather than completely defederating.

If Meta want to scrape your data they can do that anyway. All defederation does is stops you looking at their stuff (which, as you say, can be blocked at the user level anyway)

Is there a unified scanner (the hardware) driver like what we have for printers?

I'm building a sw that should be able to read the papers read from a scanner and process them with a minimal user interaction, basically I don't want the user to jump into another sw, output an image or doc, and insert that into my sw, this kind of problem seems to be fixed when it comes to printers printing, but I couldn't find...

Yes, you can now use AirScan (also called something else I don't recall currently) for "driverless" scanning.

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

No, it's a cross platform standard. You can even run a server on Linux interfacing with SANE to convert older scanners.

I looked up the non-Apple name and it's eSCL. That's a lot easier to search for.

dump1090 comes with a webpage showing which aircraft it is currently tracking, although I suspect the maps don't run offline.

I think that was quite common in that era - probably from typewriters which had a shift lock rather than a caps lock (as due to the mechanical nature it isn't possible to shift just the alphabetic characters on a typewriter). Commodore used Shift Lock on their computers pre-Amiga (also it was a physical clicky button, which is the most satisfying thing ever).

To save reading the paywalled article, the site is at https://stract.com

I've only done a single search but it gave me a summary at the top, and some discussion forums in a different format. I'm impressed so far!

Tbh I just saw it needed a login and scrolled back up to the link without reading further, so was obviously a bit hasty in my assessment of it being a paywall.

I've just noticed there's a Fediverse "optic", so you can restrict it to Fediverse sites.

What Meta’s Fediverse Plans Mean for Threads Users ( www.wired.com )

Meta is treading carefully, doing a phased implementation while continuing conversations with Fediverse leaders. This will give the company more time to iron out some of the integration kinks. “Do we adapt the protocol to be able to support this?” Lambert asks. “Or do we try to do some kind of interesting, unique...

I don't know. Mastodon already supports audio posts, how does that federate? Why can't Threads do the same thing?

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

I don’t always, but when I do it’s mostly to do with character customisation. If I’m playing a game where my character is constantly visible I’d rather it was something I wanted to look at, and male clothing is boring. OK, some games don’t restrict clothes but many do. So I tend to create a character which is a female version of me, except in the cases where I prefer a male character (which isn’t often if I have the choice!)

I use f2fs on my Raspberry Pis, it’s designed for flash storage and appears to have much better performance than ext4 on the same device. I’m not sure whether it’s suitable for SSDs, or just SD cards and USB (these devices are optimised for FAT and f2fs utilises that optimisation). When I tried to use f2fs on a proper laptop it was too early and the distro didn’t support booting from it. I assume that has changed now.

As for the others, I usually stick with ext4 as I’ve never seen a compelling reason not to.

@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

What I missed mentioning is it does wear-levelling so as its name suggests it is “flash friendly” and stops SD cards wearing out so quickly.

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

I bow to your superior knowledge. It definitely doesn’t wear out SD cards as quickly though, but that might be due to other factors not wear levelling.

Clipshare: Copy anywhere, paste anywhere, end to end encrypted ( github.com )

Hello everyone, I would like to share my little project I’ve been working on recently. There are many awesome data sharing solutions around. However, I’ve always wanted to be able to just alt+C on one machine and Alt+P on another, clipboard is just such a handy thing! so, I finally decided to get this done. Welcome...

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Those shortcuts invoke clipshare. It looks like there’s also a sync mode so you can use normal copy/paste and it will still sync.

I’ve been switching back to Firefox. The latest Raspberry Pi OS finally has Firefox as a supported browser, which was the kick I needed, as I tend to use the Pi as my main computer for general tasks. Yesterday I installed the Android Firefox too. I’m trying to reduce reliance on Google as I don’t like what they are trying to do with Chrome.

It was invite only, not open registration, so not surprising they didn’t have many users. Although Bluesky is the same and that seems to have loads. Hmm.

I had an account but literally used it for five seconds and then largely forgot about it.

Pi Hut have a makers advent calendar. It’s a Pico microcontroller and 24 projects. Maybe that’s more a leading up to Christmas thing? Not sure how much programming there is, it might be more electronics. thepihut.com/…/maker-advent-calendar-includes-ras…

Food Delivery Robots Are Feeding Camera Footage to the LAPD, Internal Emails Show ( www.404media.co )

Serve Robotics, which delivers food for Uber Eats, provided footage filmed by at least one of its robots to the LAPD as evidence in a criminal case. The emails show the robots, which are a constant sight in the city, can be used for surveillance....

i_am_not_a_robot ,

Somebody tried to steal a robot and was surprised that video footage from the robot was used as evidence?

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

The issue is that if a crime is committed then the police will be interested in gathering any video footage they can get their hands on (I’ve had it at work where I’ve been asked for CCTV footage from cameras that may have had an outside chance of capturing something important). If a company is sending robots out with cameras on them, and they are recording footage, then that footage is going to be requested (whether the company admits to working with the police or not).

Should there be this many cameras watching our every move? Probably not, but as the cameras are there, they are going to be used, and people should expect to be recorded - especially if they are committing a crime.

Ask Lemmy: Traditional vs natural mouse scrolling; which do you use?

Despite being a heavy cell phone user for more than 25 years, it only recently occurred to me that vertical navigation on most phones is inverted when compared to traditional computers. You swipe down to navigate upward, and up to navigate downward. I recently spent time using a MacBook, which apparently defaults to this...

i_am_not_a_robot ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

It makes no sense to me. A lot of Windows drivers seem to default to it now, so scrolling down on the wheel scrolls up on the screen. I always change it back to the old method, as this way is backwards to be.

@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Quite possibly, but even on a laptop touchpad it seems wrong.

Seriously Solutions - Experience the power of shopping ( www.seriouslysolutions.com )

I was prompted to remember this shop in Bedford by an article posted about a fake toy shop in Ayr. Some research turned up that it had a website, which I’ve linked to. The “real” shop had all the website products on display. It was created by (the legend) Tim Hunkin....
