I used journalctl -k -f and this is the output, I've also tried dmesg and smartctl and replied with the output on other comments, and all show some kind of I/O error, I guess I'm fucked or can it be because of a bad cable or something?

Whats the purpose for usernames on signal?

Been using signal for years and love it and got the majority of my contacts on to it. My question is how are usernames useful now? You still need to register with a phone number with signal to limit spam and bots afaik and I'm assuming you should protect your username just like you do your phone number anyways because spam,...

You still need a terminal emulator capable of displaying images, though, right? Like Kitty, Allacrity won't do the trick.

I think another difference is that Movary has some more social features, web sites to track the media you consume often allow you to follow people with the same tastes, see how other people rated things, have recommendations, stats, etc.

It's still in alpha, so maybe, I guess you could open an issue and ask about it, maybe even help. 😁

Linux working in one monitor but not in the other

So, yesterday I was trying to install Fedora on a PC with an Nvidia graphics card, it is a bit old and it has an Intel CPU. Basically as soon as I booted the USB it went all weird like if it would be having a graphical glitch like going all rainbow in some parts and stop responding, I tried a few more times under a UEFI secure...

NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 Rev. 2

That's my hardware

I honestly rather not install nouveau since iknow it can cause issues and i wouldnt mind installing nvidias proprietary drivers if it makes it work since its not even for me

do you know if i should install the 470xx or the one just called nvidia drivers in the app store?

ill give it a try to the rest tho, thanks!

What's the best way to have a .bashrc that I can use throughout systems?

So, I just found out about a programme called SynthShell which kind of does the work for you and gives you a nice looking shell, the thing is that this also creates some config files and other stuff in my system, instead of just one .bashrc file to edit. What would be the best way to learn to have a nice looking bash where I can...

I think I maybe phrased it horribly, my question was more like, what do I need to learn in order to modify myself the .bashrc by myself instead of using a programme. Does it make sense?

Yeah, recently after posting this I went down a rabbit hole and found out about zsh and fish and I kind of like fish so I’m thinking about going straight to that, what a hard choice.

I was using a similar guide, and it also talked about the locale.gen, but that file was never to be found, I just searched a bit more into that and this popped up. So it seems Fedora handles things differently, but now I’m unsure what commands to execute since I’m not sure the ones in that thread are also valid for me.

gary_host_laptop OP ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

I think it’s pure luck what font does your OS prefer, I was using Pop_OS and it defaulted to Japanese, but I think it’s more common to default to Chinese because of the population size.

gary_host_laptop OP ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, in Firefox’s settings there’s an option to use my own fonts instead of the web site, so I don’t think it’s related to anything like that, but rather some setting within the OS, related to locale config files.

gary_host_laptop OP ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

I was trying to do that but I’m unsure what to edit to do that, since most tutorials are using either a Debian based or Arch distro.

It seems there was an issue with some of the things needed for the extension to be on the store, they already sent the fix to Mozilla and are waiting for them to response, this happened on Friday so most likely they will reply this week.

gary_host_laptop OP ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

Really cool, would you ever consider contributing to their extension and adding that feature to theirs?

gary_host_laptop OP ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, suppossedly what they would offer doesn’t seem to change things much:

Future Pricing Plans

We have a few product ideas we have experimented with that would be paid add-ons to the current service: collaborative tools, AI integration, translation tools, and premium text to speech voices. Of these features, the premium text to speech voices are the only one that are currently available in the app, as part of our “ultra realistic voices” beta.

Here seems to be a recent PR of someone trying to help out with this, maybe you can give a hand? Seems you understand a bit about the topic.

Some time ago I was looking for a Linux music player ( harmonoid.com )

Well, I have to say that Harmonoid is the best one I’ve found, it has a ton of cool features, it works and it allows you to be able to see your collection by album and it doesn’t use Electron. Right now its development has stalled a bit but it’s still pretty much in good shape, though.

[Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

I’m helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because “Linux can’t play games” despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones....

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

I’d say it is open source but it is not libre software.

What is the best music player that lets you see your collection by album covers?

There are some really nice music players out there but most of them work in this kind of tree way where they show you a small image of the album, and below all of the songs, or worst, directly show you all of the songs. I generally browse by looking at album covers and there I decide what to listen, so being able to look at the...

Hey, honestly, yeah, it has all of this and it looks good. Sadly it is Electron, which sucks since there’s a Windows version that uses C+. I think I’m still going to use this since it seems the best option.
