“The purpose is not solely religious,” Sen. Jay Morris, R-West Monroe, told the Senate. Rather, it is the Ten Commandments' "historical significance, which is simply one of many documents that display the history of our country and foundation of our legal system.”

Only two of them are actually law: Thou shalt not murder and thou shalt not steal.

This is all about religion, and they're going to get away with it. We'd be better off if our legal codes were based on the seven tenets instead.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

That only applies to the Old Testament passages that forbid usury, of course.

I went through 18 years of being forced to go to church and never learned the word.

Methinks that was purposeful.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

All the time, and especially for cops. (It's called 'qualified immunity' and 'civil forfeiture' instead of murdering and stealing, but it's the same thing.)

Because the Lord works in mysterious ways, or some other dumb shit excuse.

FlashMobOfOne ,

Proportion distortions aside, it's pretty accurate.

This joke made me snort my coffee. Please accept my humble upvote.

That's valid.

Yup, we've known he's a hardcore Catholic douche for years here in KC. In his shoes, I'd not be so preachy though. People that preachy get their skeletons dug up.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

He's actually a very good painter.

Too bad he didn't pursue an art career and opted to destroy the world instead. Having been born independently wealthy, he could have made it in the art world easily.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

I hope the unions give these bastards a nice, swift kick in the ass.

If anyone should be taking a pay cut, it's the shitty CEO's whose decisions make flying a miserable experience.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

I didn't know that.

Ain't that a fucking bitch.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

From what I've learned of that guy, I'm sure he honestly believes this.

What an asshole.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

So nice that, now that I no longer use Twitter, I don't generally have to hear Ann Coulter's bullshit.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

Not only that. People think her racist hate speech should be protected under the First Amendment.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yes.

I'm guessing you also think that, in order for free enterprise to exist, we have to allow American companies to pollute rivers at will too.

Makes total sense.

Free speech is not an absolute right under the law and absolutely should not be. There are innumerable examples why. Try threatening a judge if you think otherwise.

FlashMobOfOne , (edited )
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

I'm just accurately recharacterizing your assertion here.

Clearly freedom can't exist unless we tolerate its worst excesses.

That's what you're saying, though I don't think allowing fascist and Nazi speech is analogous to the argument the free speech needs to exist for the assholes. Being a Nazi and a fascist is a terrorist act, not "being an asshole". An asshole pisses in the river. A Nazi is the American corporation dumping waste in the river en masse.

Never mind that we can look across the pond at Germany and see quite clearly that freedom of expression can exist alongside a ban on fascist and Nazi speech.

Oddly enough, in a way, he's right.

Democrats' response to Roe repeal news was to fundraise. They pulled in a cool $80,000,000.

Democrats are never going to codify Roe because it's just too lucrative an issue. It's the same reason why Republicans will make sure we always have a so-called border crisis.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

It's pointless because it's their golden goose. It's only a states-rights issue because it was never legislated at the federal level, even when the Dems had a supermajority.

FlashMobOfOne , (edited )
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

The process to amend the constitution is far more complicated than passing a federal law. SCOTUS effectively blocked any federal law in their ruling that said it is a states’ rights issue.

You're right, Jeff.

It's just too hard to do. We shouldn't expect better. How silly of me to think Democrats might do what they promise one day.

EDIT: Downvote all you like, but it's a matter of fact, not opinion.

Presidents can and have assassinated US citizens.

Obama did it.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

He's not a coward.

He's rich, and we're not. Carlin said it best: It's a big club and you (meaning we in this case) ain't in it.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

I appreciate the ACLU's efforts, but it's quite apparent that US presidents are above the law.

Christians are really, really good at seeing themselves at the good guys no matter the circumstances. They just kind of ignore that the only reason they're the dominant religion in the world is that they murdered most of their enemies over two millennia.

Red Lobster eyes bankruptcy option after $11M in losses from endless shrimp ( abcnews.go.com )

"Last year, Red Lobster reported $11 million in operating losses following its flubbed 'Ultimate Endless Shrimp' deal, which backfired when it reeled in too many customers after the limited-time promo became a permanent menu fixture last June. The restaurant chain later reported $12.5 million in losses in the fourth quarter of...

Once their cheddar biscuits became purchasable on a store shelf, I imagine that decreased the impetus to visit the actual restaurant.

Their biscuits are the best part.

At this point I can't tell if these guys are seeing how far they can push things.

There's no opposition. Hell, everyone with oversight in Uvalde got reelected.

Why stop when you have absolute power?

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

I still remember Brownback's last campaign ad: "The sun is shining in Kansas and don't let anybody tell you any different."

That last bit's kind of prophetic now.

I'd vote for him over both of the incoherent lumps of flesh currently in the running.

In Poland firefighters were called to a house fire. There were no people inside the house but there was a terrified bunny that the firefighters rescued from the flames. ( wgoleniowie.pl )

According to the article the top floor of the house and the roof had burned down completely. The firefighters had to bust in the door and use oxygen masks to get inside. The bunny was found inside an enclosure in one of the rooms. It was panicked and difficult to catch but they succeeded in rescuing the cute little furball. The...

The really sad thing is he's not wrong.

No country seems willing to try and force real change here, and given how barbaric the US has shown itself to be on the world stage, it's hard to blame them for their reticence to act.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

Just going to file this in the back of my mind as another reason why I would never, ever trust a child to be alone with an overtly religious person. Disgusting.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

As he should. What a fine, furry gentleman.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn't make a ton of sense to argue that Biden is incompetent and somehow magically running a crime family. Those opinions do not jive with one another.

Also, yes, Boebert probably isn't someone who should comment on criminal activity, especially after deciding to fuck someone in a crowded theater.

FlashMobOfOne ,

This is helpful info. I've been thinking of doing a dual boot for a while just for better privacy, keeping Windows for gaming only.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

That's what I hear, but as someone just starting out with Linux, switching over completely is more of a 'down the line' kind of deal for when I'm more comfortable with it.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

I'm pretty current on technology but honestly never heard of Youtube-To-MP3 conversion.

Thinking this may be the ticket to cutting the cord with Spotify, but as others have suggested, I fully intend to buy tracks of my favorite indie folks too.

Do artists actually get a decent cut from Band Camp?

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

Man, I never knew there was a way to download my entire spotify playlist.

That's been the biggest thing tethering me to their service, since they empty you out when you unsubscribe.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

Yup.

Canceled my Prime sub a month ago when they announced they were going to make people pay more to stay add free.

It's the high seas for me.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

I didn't mind the small increase to 11.99, but the way they're doing this just rubs me the wrong way.

They're not only increasing the sub price, but tinkering with the display quality too AND laying people off... Netflix just doesn't deserve my cash when I can access most of this content via other means.

I got rid of a bunch of subs at the beginning of the year, getting rid of NF too.

Michael Cohen cites AI-generated court cases in his defense ( www.theverge.com )

Michael Cohen, the former lawyer for Donald Trump, admitted to citing fake, AI-generated court cases in a legal document that wound up in front of a federal judge, as reported earlier by The New York Times. A filing unsealed on Friday says Cohen used Google’s Bard to perform research after mistaking it for “a super-charged...
