I am owned by several dogs and cats. I have been playing non-computer roleplaying games for almost five decades. I am interested in all kinds of gadgets, particularly multitools, knives, flashlights, and pens.

We need a similar bill that would send anyone convicted of unlawful activity in the US Capital since January 5th of 2021 to Siberia.

Every years or so I try out a bunch of alternate keyboards. Then I go back to using Gboard. {sigh}

I’ve been using swipe typing for years and I just can’t get by without it. None of the privacy oriented keyboards do it well enough to really be usable yet.

All dogs should have their own comfy seats. And the rest of us make do as best we can. :-)

Mine do that too.

AnyStream has worked well for me. Sadly, I often get better quality results with PlayOn.

PlayOn produces higher resolution files than AnyStream on the services I use most frequently.

I recently switched to FairEmail. It’s a really nice app and works much better than anything else I’ve tried. And it would be a shame if it were abandoned.

On the other hand, I have published a few things to Google Play myself. Google has made constant effort necessary to keep up with their policies. It wasn’t worth the trouble for someone like me who just casually released things I built for my own use. I can’t blame anyone else for deciding to step away from it either.

It is appalling that he also has to deal with abuse and threats for performing a public service.

This is why we can’t have nice things. {sigh}

How could even Microsoft release a product named WinCE? I’ve marveled at it for decades.

Just wanted a warning, Lemmy.World is perhaps worse than reddit at respecting their users ( web.archive.org )

I just suddenly found my user over there banned. Not for getting in a fight or breaking any rules, but just for criticizing and asking questions regarding its recent vague Terms of Service. In fact, no reason, warning, or reply was given beforehand, and the admin who did it suddenly scaled to banned, with no reply or anything...

There are plenty of other instances out there with different policies and different approaches to moderation. I live in the US, but I use lemmy.ca. Their writeups said that it is not restricted to Canadians. My experiences here have all been positive. Very nice people.

I use option #1. Each instance of KeePass maintains a local file, but updates them automatically whenever it opens or closes. I also back up the file to my personal server automatically, so I have a copy even if the cloud service fails for some reason.

This setup has been serving me well for a long time.

That sounds promising. I’m still wearing a five-year-old Fossil because nothing since has seemed like enough of an improvement to justify the cost.

I have tried it multiple times with various devices, going back to the Palm Pilot. Modern Android does the best of any environment I’ve tried, but I still consider it unusable for editing. There may be some clever, outside-of-the-box solution that would make it viable, but so far there hasn’t been enough demand to drive that kind of development.

I have a small UPS to keep my fiber and router working for a while and I have a larger UPS for my server. Even the larger UPS will only keep the server going for maybe half-an-hour, but most outages here are short. For me, the most important benefit is that my UPS will tell my server to shutdown when it begins to get short of power. Graceful shutdowns remove the risk of corruption and data loss.

I’m not sure requests for help with Linux would be that much more frequent than the ones I get now asking for help with Windows. The Windows UX is getting worse while the Linux UX has been getting better for a while now.

I understand the cynicism, but it’s worth looking at the details. This is not the most powerful phone on the market, but it looks very good. The price is reasonable. It is easier and less expensive to repair than anything else on the market and it comes with a much longer warranty. They appear to be serious about both minimizing their environmental impact and being fair to the workers all the way down their supply chain. Those are all significant achievements.

I don’t need a new phone right now, but I’m still tempted, just to encourage the effort. We tend to complain about all corporations being basically evil. We should do everything we can to support the ones that really aren’t.

If you need to add more than one drive you should look at external enclosures. There are 4-drive models just over $100 and 8-drive models just over $200. You connect them with eSata, USB 3, or USB C, depending on the enclosure.

There are other polyhedral die rollers for Wear OS. I don’t have my smart watch on to find the name, but I’ve been using one for several years.

People sticking with audio jack phones, why is USB-C earphones not a solution?

Don’t get me wrong. Apple removing audio jack was the biggest facepalm in smartphone history. And you can thank it for not being able to make an upgrade without sacrificing audio jack (and SD card too :/). But USB-C is getting standardized everywhere now (laptops, smartphones, etc.). What makes USB-C earphones not worth the...

Curious_Canid ,
@Curious_Canid@lemmy.ca avatar

When companies began to drop the audio jack I was annoyed, but I figured I could just buy a converter. Which would be great if there were a universal standard for connecting audio through a USB C. There isn’t. There aren’t even just two competing approaches. There are all kinds of different setups that sometimes vary even within a single brand.

I found multiple adapter that said it supported my phone brand. It didn’t work. I looked deeper and found some advice on adapters that would work with more recent phone. I bought one based on that and it worked, sort of. The audio quality was not great and it would occasionally just cut out for a second. My third try got me an adapter that work reliably, but the audio quality is still mediocre. My best headphones are all analog, but I have to use Bluetooth with my phone because it provides better audio.

The physical issues, particularly the connectors, guarantees that USB C will never work as well. The lack of standards for implementing it make finding compatible hardware a nightmare. And if you manage to get everything else figured out you end up with the kind of sound you can hear from an audio jack using a $5 set of earbuds. It provides no benefits to the user, only to the manufacturer.
