I had problems with multiple monitors on Bazzite when trying it out today. PopOS was okay, but it's still runs X11, and Suse tumbleweed would crash due to graphics issues. So I'm on Fedora 40 now and it's working excellently (even V rising). F40 and Suse were the only ones to detect Windows on another disk and automatically make it available in the boot menu, which was nice.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services ( www.theguardian.com )

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

Bookmeat ,

Exactly. The licensing and sublicensing structures in TV and film are way more complicated than in video games. They also intentionally license for relatively short durations for tax reasons and other corporate considerations that have nothing to do with the end viewer or consumer.

Your traffic will be analyzed even when encrypted because information leaks in your traffic patterns and ML can suss out what you're browsing or talking to. If you want to avoid this you need to pad your packets and stuff random data into your packet stream to throw off the analysis.

Half the industry, if not more, is already seeking alternatives to vcenter, esxi, director, and the rest of the gang. Watch the install base shrinking going forward.

Bookmeat ,

Competition? That would damage the economy! How are the fat cats supposed to stay fat?!

Have you seen the new Ubuntu 24.04lts release? :)

[Resolved] Weird Permission Problem

This morning I was going through my usual routine of doing a docker pull and I saw that Paperless had an update. Upon checking the Github, I noticed that my version was a lot older than what's currently available. After a bit of digging, I realised that Linux Server deprecated their repository. Cool, no worries, let me switch to...

Check whether you have extended attributes like SElinux or ACL, assuming you're checking file system permissions. Sometimes there are permission problems when you run out of storage space or a file system is marked as read only, etc. similarly, networked file systems have their own layers of security and quotas to review. Good luck!

OMFG. Never knew there was something so awesome as Symfonium. Thanks! So easy to connect it to my Plex instance. GLEEEEEE.

Bookmeat ,

Some distributions also maintain their own kernels with patches that may or may not support your hardware. For example, Red Hat specifically removes support for some storage devices even though the baseline kernel has support.

Bookmeat ,

For Red Hat in particular you can find this information in the release notes, but it will generally not compare to baseline. Instead it notes deprecated support for hardware and support for new hardware. Each distro does things its own way.

If you have to put a root kit on the client to prevent cheating you have no idea how to implement correct anti-cheat and you should be flogged.

Are you reusing one postgres instance for all services?

I have many services running on my server and about half of them use postgres. As long as I installed them manually I would always create a new database and reuse the same postgres instance for each service, which seems to me quite logical. The least amount of overhead, fast boot, etc....

Bookmeat ,

If you don't care about down time then feel free to consolidate all your apps to one postgresql instance. If you want to do maintenance on your DB it may impact all your other applications.

Bookmeat ,

Containers are really only useful for scaling. I suppose there's some benefit to isolation, but it's not really that much better than just using correct permissions with SElinux.

OP is kinda right. Containers get overused unnecessarily.

Bookmeat ,

Sure, let's add another layer of complexity for the user to set up their network, storage, and other external resources and call it easier and simpler.

My point isn't that containers are bad. It's just that there is often a push to containerise workloads that don't require containers.

Bookmeat ,

Thanks, this is a nice resource.

Bookmeat ,

This is a great point and yuzu may get burned for it. Hopefully, it's not lost on developers of future emulators.

Bookmeat ,

I know it's hard to hear because sometimes we are so passionate about these things, but it's okay to have to wait for support on an unsupported platform. Having to wait a week is, in fact, incredibly fortunate. Consider how long it takes to get mac or Linux support on many PC games. A week? We're laughing.

And if the sales figures are bumped in the first week? Let's try to understand why it's bad that developers, publishers, and those other middle-men get paid for their work. Not all games are wildly successful. Most aren't. And evil Nintendo making more money... Well, if they don't make money you don't get any games. And consider that this is a platform which for the most part has avoided sinking into shady and unethical loot box practices. You can fault Nintendo for a lot, but from their perspective, free 0-day access to their games is an existential crisis.

-80 now, but give it a couple of decades and climate change will make it into another hot desert.

Bookmeat ,

This number was pulled out of my ass to make a point :)

Literally a page out of GTA V script.

Bookmeat ,

I haven't played that one, but in gta5 Michael takes his kid to a DQ and his kid picks up drugs there with a beverage.

The big tech giants are the opposite of creativity and it’s why they will always fail in gaming. They’re the middle men between consumers and creators and it’s the only reason they’re successful.

Open source devs: please, please add screenshots...

I beg you, if you are a developer of an open source app or program - add screenshots of your app to the README file. When looking for the perfect app, I had to install dozens of them just to see what the user interface looked like and whether it suits me. This will allow users to decide if the app they choose will suit them…...

Bookmeat ,

Won’t hurt to also put in a description of what your software actually is or does. Countless GitHub repos with instructions on how to install, but zero information about why I’d want to.

CHROME (google) is planing to implement DRM (kinda) into their browser ( lemmy.dbzer0.com )

looks like rendering adblockers extensions obsolete with manifest-v3 was not enough so now they try to implement DRM into the browser giving the ability to any website to refuse traffic to you if you don’t run a complaint browser ( cough…firefox )...

Bookmeat ,

I predict this standard will die the way of Flash and Silverlight. If it makes the web more fragile and less accessible it will fail.

What is you backup tool of choice?

I don’t mean system files, but your personal and work files. I have been using Mint for a few years, I use Timeshift for system backups, but archived my personal files by hand. This got me curious to see what other people use. When you daily drive Linux what are your preferred tools to keep backups? I have thousands of...
