Honestly, it sucks. I've been increasingly falling back on regular SMS, because a lot of people seem to prefer cutting me off to the slight effort of a different communication medium. I was thinking that everyone has a phone, but there's a lot of resistance to using it in my age group.

Iceblade02 ,

Until you realize that somebody can make up a fake version of themselves, or pay for "extra benefits" or whatever. I too like the idea, but I'm afraid it's already been ruined.

Iceblade02 OP , (edited )

Oh undoubtedly!

Hopefully my partitioning was decent though, so distro-hopping shouldn't be too hard if I feel like switching (or even running different distros side-by-side?)

I was personally drawn to it because: it's not Ubuntu; ButterFS seems like a nice safety net; KDE Plasma is sexy AF; noone seems to have anything particularly horrible to say about it.

Why is your chosen distro (obviously) the superior choice?

Iceblade02 OP ,

Thanks! Next step is getting equivalents for all the software I use and figuring out proton.

Most of them (thankfully) are foss, but I've a few without equivalents.

Iceblade02 OP ,

But b-tree file system sounds way less fun!

It's already cemented itself as butterfly system in my mind lol

Iceblade02 OP ,

Mint was 2nd in line on the choice list, so not far off!

Iceblade02 OP ,

I'll go have a look

Iceblade02 OP ,

It suggested 200GiBs for root, which seemed a bit excessive but I didn't argue

Iceblade02 OP ,

Haven't tried. I did use Mint on a second laptop a while back, and that was nice, but I wanted something with KDE Plasma this time

My car is seven years older than me and basic traffic insurance is ~300€ (equivalent) per year.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

Iceblade02 ,

Yeah, I'm currently using an old version (2018!) Of AutoDesk sketchbook, since it seems like every other option tries to force me into a subscription or cloud service. I just want to take notes!

Quick video demonstrating that lemmy.world sends every activity out twice ( i.imgur.com )

I realise this is a known issue and that lemmy.world isn't the only instance that does this. Also, I'm aware that there are other things affecting federation. But I'm seeing some things not federate, and can't help thinking that things would be going smoother if all the output from the biggest lemmy instance wasn't 50% spam....

Iceblade02 ,

You can still make a bug report, so that somebody with the actual means can look into it. If every action is duplicated that'd be pretty severe, if not, well it'll be closed.

Iceblade02 ,

Idk, it's FOSS, so you could always try, but just complaining and hoping somebody picks up on it probably also works. I don't judge :)

Rethinking Moderation: A Call for Trust Level Systems in the Fediverse

The current state of moderation across various online communities, especially on platforms like Reddit, has been a topic of much debate and dissatisfaction. Users have voiced concerns over issues such as moderator rudeness, abuse, bias, and a failure to adhere to their own guidelines. Moreover, many communities suffer from a...

On a basic level, the idea of certain sandboxing, i.e image and link posting restrictions along with rate limits for new accounts and new instances is probably a good idea.

However, I do not think "super users" are a particularly good idea. I see it as preferrable that instances and communities handle their own moderation with the help of user reports - and some simple degree of automation.

An engaged user can already contribute to their community by joining the moderation team, and the mod view has made it significantly easier to have an overview of many smaller communities.

I've slowly been ditching google products these past years, and it feels good. Finally made the move to proton just before christmas.

Iceblade02 ,

I just use my mobile browser (firefox for android) to view it.

A bit unclear writing but I expect that’s 880 of the respondents.

As a MoS&E student in northern Europe I’d love to hear why these companies have such a bad rep over in India. They’re doing massive recruitment drives at my uni (along with BCG) and sponsor a lot of student events, so I don’t hear many bad things about them.

Iceblade02 ,

Ah, makes sense then why they’re pushing so hard to have a presence at our universities. Hopefully I’ll be able to avoid such employers in the future. Thanks for the heads up!

Iceblade02 ,

Both up- and downvotes do have a significant function. I actually prefer the lemmy method where they are presented separately.

A simple example could be a post such as:

YSK: The world actually is flat

-contains link to some bogus videos and stuff

In a lemmy w/o downvotes, it could show as only (10 upvotes) until a mod gets around to removing it, whilst in one with downvotes this post would quickly accrue downvotes if it gained any amount of traction.

I used a simple example here, but my point is that the combination of up and downvotes provide an easy gauge of general sentiment towards the statement/comment/post.

Iceblade02 ,

This is Lemmy, not hexbear, beehaw or similar forums. I’ve had experience with other platforms removing “downvotes” (or their version of it). Sometimes it works, but oftentimes it doesn’t.

We can go a lot further into this discussion, but I’ll summarize my opinion as follows:

Neither having nor not having downvotes is “right”. They’re just different - and lead to different types of forums and discussions. I prefer the former, because in many topics that I want to discuss, they provide important feedback (both to me and others), even if you perceive that this feedback comes at a cost.

If you like, we can elaborate further, but I think it comes down to Beehaw ( & co.) and Lemmy being different platforms, which is a good thing. The world would be a very dreary place if everything was the same - and this is something that corporations are constantly pushing us towards.
