Lol, who wants these anyways. One more reason not to use google play services. (Though I have google play services on this phone.)
Automatic AI-powered screen lock for when your phone is snatched.
Theft Detection Lock is a powerful new feature that uses Google AI to sense if someone snatches your phone from your hand and tries to run, bike or drive away. If a common motion associated with theft is detected, your phone screen quickly locks – which helps keep thieves from easily accessing your data.
Yes! I had one, from 2016 till 2020. Ulefone vienna (not a rugged phone).
If you like modding like me, then it's probably not a good idea, as they usually have little community support and the mediatek chipset contributes to this even more.
Back then, I think it did probably had some kind of a malware, but with root I removed it (I could also do it with adb commands if I knew back then).
If you want a hardened phone and for some reason you cant find a proper case to protect your device, then such phones may be suitable, otherwise I'd look somewhere else.
Simple, include sd cards on phones and use usb 3.0 or higher..
(I say that as I am about to wipe my device with ~200gb data and then import them back again through wifi hotspot because wired transfer is slower than wireless and it doesnt have an sd card slot...
I have usb 2.0 though, so it's gonna be slow ~no matter what😭. I get ~15MB/s on average and it can reach ~40MB/s with wifi hotspot, while usb goes at about ~6MB/s on average and can reach about 30MB/s.
The issue are the small files. Wifi handles them much quicker. Especially listing folders with thousands of files. Opening my camera directory (~8.500 files) with wifi takes about 5seconds, while with usb it takes about ~1-2minutes....
About nas, I would too like to have one and automatically backup everything there. I might build one some time.
I'm transfering data from my phone to an extrernal hard drive which I connect to my laptop. To do the syncing a bit more automated, I've written some WinSCP scripts. I create a local hostpot with my phone, I connect my pc to it and then I move files. (My phone has a dual wifi antenna which allows to have both the hotspot on and connect to my wifi, so I can post this comment without using data.)
The data I transfer are ~all sorts of types; Media files (either from my camera folder or various other folders), text or similar files (I also keep logs of the files on my device to help me restore stuff), encrypted files, backups of apps+data/phone settings/contacts/sms/calls etc. At the moment of writing this I'm transfering about 30-40gb to my pc as I slowly prepare myself for the factory reset.
My workflow is far from automated, but I've made a lot of progress since last year with the help of the scripts.
It's sad though, because backing up and restoring everything now takes about 9hours, while with an sd card I could reduce it to something like half an hour... My next phone will probably be fairphone 6 or 7 in 2028 (now I have a xiaomi mi 10 running custom roms) if it has an sd card slot.
I have about 25gb free out of the 1tb my laptop has, sooo not a good idea, plus it adds complexity. Well, I'll just improve my scripts and try to keep things tidied up so that it becomes easier. (Lol, now I'm post factory reset and I've started importing stuff back to the phone. Till tommorow noon everything may be set up.) Tnx for your interest!
As a side note, I've realized that transfering files from the phone to the laptop (instead straight to the external hard drive) makes the process a lot faster, compared to moving them to the drive directly, but still, I prefer the wireless transfer as I can sync folders easier and it's faster.
If you set it up properly (like using apps to sync folders) a big enough sd is like local "cloud" service.
I was thinking about it recently, after my phone data were very close to being deleted (I managed to prevent it eventually), I was angry at how not having an sd slot caused me so many issues. If I had a 1tb sd I would just autosync app backups and files to my card and not worry ~at all about losing data from bootloops etc.
It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?
Haven't tried Alovoa, but think of it differently; if someone is on Alovoa, they maybe are more similar-minded to you, because they too probably like open source stuff.
As Louis Rossmann also said, using a single port for both charging/moving data and listening music increases the wear on the port. They're just made to wear down faster with the absence of the audio jack port.
Plus it's impractical, as it occupies the type c port.
I dont know, but if you also use it to plug in earphones you may double the use.
Im using my type c port phone for about 3.5years so far (I rarely plug headphones in it though) and the port seems ok.
But either way, this extra wear down is simply another negative aspect of this move and I think so far the disanvantages outweigh the advantages (also I think it's just so that they can sell their wireless earphones and on a lower degree support planned obsolesence).
I feel that Wikitionary is rather underappreciated. I would like to ues it as my main dictionary, but I haven't been able to find a good app that uses it as a backend.
Been using it for about 4 months, it's so good and FAST (without the need of searching words online).
I have the open english wordnet and the greek wiktionary for english to english and whatever-language (mainly english) to greek trasnlations when I'm reading my english books or when I want to check the spelling of a word (I use no auto-correct). :)
I was trying to do a memory test to see how far back 3.5 could recall information from previous prompts, but it really doesn’t seem to like making pseudorandom seeds. 😆
Helping each app know whether you screenshot something or not doesnt seem like a good idea to me. Blocking it would be somewhat ok, but detecting it seems not that much ok.
If I want to screenshot something without being detected I can bypass the detection by screencasting the device to another phone and take a screenshot from there or just use a camera (or take a note etc etc).
You can’t depend on those measures to ensure your privacy.
What if they use it to know if you are interested in something. What if tiktok or any other app uses it to make more “appropriate” content for you and make a better profile of you? The same applies for websites. Also, what if the OS provided by the phone manufacturer itself that you use also uses that detection? I suppose it already can do that, but why make the detection better?
I know many people will probably not go that far to bypass detection if they want to screenshot something that you don’t want them to, but if you don’t want them to (or you don’t trust them) you probably shouldn’t send whatever you sent them.🤷
And my last point is that it can make people unecessarily suspicious of you if you screenshot something. You might found a message funny and wanted to keep it, not use it for blackmailing. (Though in my 1 to 1 chats I almost always tell the other “I’m saving that” or something similar if I’m screenshoting the chat.) It creates an extra level of anxiety, like those read reciepts on many messenger apps.
I might be wrong, but I don’t feel comfortable with apps knowing what I screenshot.
Edit: I’d like to add that many times those apps don’t have an on/off switch which would be helpful.
Basically I am looking for a messaging platform like signal or? but with anonymous signup, perfect forward secrecy, capable of video chat, sending photos the usual uses in today’s life. Often times a chat log is needed when people don’t check it often or right away.
I think the timer on each device starts from when the person who has the devices sees the message.
So if you send the message and the timer is 5 minutes, the message on your account (on all of your devices) will be deleted in 5 minutes from now, while the recipient will first see the message (maybe in an hour) and then after 5 minutes it will be deleted from their devices too.
we always just laugh and say “okay, whatever dude” before we do it anyways.
The thing is for people who aren’t used to modding and you try to side-load a random cool app on their phone (or somehow they end up doing it themselves) they might be frightened and may even cancel the installation.
I’ve used most available services, but discontinued one after another along with promises that a better user experience will be provided with reduced content and removed functionality with the slight price hike. YouTube was my first and last video service I paid for, only Spotify remains on the borderline.
