Usually a lurker.
Maybe I should’ve just shut up and thought for a bit longer before writing that comment…

Appoxo ,

Only get Usenet with a usenet deal. Usually on/around Black Friday.
Afaik deals are usually posted on r/UsenetDeals or similar called sub.

Appoxo ,

I do. Just in case.
Ironically through my seedbox provider :p

Appoxo ,

Higher and better retention of old stuff.

Appoxo ,

They are.
But my provider offers a VPN through the same connection.
Last time I looked most of seedbox and usenet providers offered this as a perk.
And the speed is very good. This time I don't even need a VPN service. Though I am limited to one country I don't have an issue with the limitation.

Appoxo ,

Best reason to start.
Andd I am not a linux fan by any means but at work I have a reason to reboot the server after 30 days runtime. My NAS at home runs fine after >3 months of runtime.

streaming or torrenting today vs. 5 years ago

I've been a good boy for 5 years or so but the seas call to me. Are streaming sites the way to go now or is torrenting still a better bet for mainstream movies and tv? I'd imagine all of my accounts have been deleted on those sites so I'd be starting over.

Appoxo ,

Theres no need for stremio if you torrent (remotely) and host jellyfin at home. Only a power outage can take me out.

Appoxo ,

I now dumpster dive through 7TB of good movies I don't find time to watch :|

Appoxo ,

Mines all in a docker conpose:
*arrs
sabnzbd and/or a seedbox + resilio/syncthing/ftp(s)
Jellyfin
a reverse proxy of your choice (mines traefik)

for DNS I utilize pihole and it's CNAME feature.

Appoxo ,

My uncle hooked me up with an R4 for my DS and 3DS.
The first software I remember pirating was Cinema4D.
I started my own media library with Jellyfin due to the increased fragmentation and price increases. Earlier I co-payed a netflix account with my friend.

But I still pay for my Spotify Account.

What's a good NAS and server system under CAD$900 (USD$658)?

I am currently using an old laptop (circa 2015) with a 250GB SSD in it, and 4GB of RAM. It runs Fedora 39 Server, and only hosts a Jellyfin instance through Docker right now (though I want to use Nextcloud later too). There is only 15GB of storage left on it, and the CPU is constantly overloaded (due to forced transcoding). I...

Appoxo ,

Currently ugreen has released some nas systems that seem powerful but have yet to be shipped (reviews are out though).

Youtube Rant from a paying customer

I used to use NewPipe back in the days of yore. Then I got Youtube Premium since it bundled in Youtube Music as well which I used. But the former's app on mobile is a shit show. Even after paying, you are asked to tip random creators, purchase merchandise[ which are shown as actual ads below videos] and join channels to access...

Appoxo ,

Because it's the new trend to be like tiktok.
I enjoy the ones I get recommended. Usually from channels I am already subscribed to anyway.
Very rarely get a random one (I don't (doom) scroll the feed) and YT seemded to get, that I am not someone to click on it.

Appoxo ,

I didn't know this was a thing and I want to thank you!

Appoxo ,

To each their own. I enjoy some posts.

Appoxo ,

Probably meant all but excluding their "own" products.

Appoxo ,

I'd do it via a seedbox. This way you won't run into ip leaks.

Appoxo ,

At worst they will log it and could build a case against you.
No need to not be paranoid.

Appoxo ,

Didnt even know abou that...
That's way too progressive.
Especially compared to their YT-channel

They are not even listing it on their website. Neither for ard.de nor tagesschau.de

Appoxo ,

Thanks for the service. Kinda missed that after departing from Reddit as my main source of doom scrolling.

Appoxo ,

Even then there would be at least that someone that would refuse it or would only sell out for (example) 1 billion €.

Appoxo ,

Why does it matter? The devs make the program not the investor.

The only reason I would refuse the tech was if the investor would try to change the direction of development or is giving out money from questionable sources...

Appoxo ,

You can alao invest without influencing?

Appoxo , (edited )

What I personally use and what I plan to do. Maybe it's worth something for you:

Currently in production:

  • Intel Nuc 11th gen i5-1135G7 wirh 8gb single Sodimm
  • Storage: 8TB external hdd via USB 3.0
  • OS: Debian with OMV6
  • Jellyfin running in docker. Media is organized with the *arr suite

HW transcoding is fine for single 4K HDR -> 1080p but I probably misconfigured something and it could be better or the linuxserver container is bad.
Don't care enough to fix it :p

Planned in the future:

  • Ugreen DX4800+ NAS as NFS or iSCSI storage with 8-10TB of Raid1 (for now) storage.

Btw: This is my hardware (literal) stack :)

Appoxo ,

You got the wrong application. Since other users already mentioned plenty of alternatives this comment is also redundant and can be ignored.

Appoxo ,

I mean you can kinda do it with one way syncs (e.g. read only shares and give a friend the code so they can connect to it).

Appoxo ,

Found it out the hard way because I have automatic updates with watchtower... xD

Appoxo ,

He... give it a Go. ;)

Appoxo ,

Yaml is better.
But it has a dashboard.

Appoxo ,

Juat an error due to the swarmRefresh setting in the traefik.yml.
Because I am not running in swarm mode it threw an error.
Oh well. Life and learn ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Appoxo ,

Yeah...I should be doing it but I am honestly too lazy to change my compose.
The only place I actually did it is my mongodb container bexause I know absolutely nothing about it.
At lwast I can rescue my traefik config :p

Appoxo ,

Huh?
4x 30€ is not 150€ on my calculator (DDR4 RAM I bought for my Intel NUC which I use as my server)

Now if we talk about DDR5, 2x 16GB, ECC and registered Kits...That might fit.
The kit I bought was 148€ in April 2023. Even now it's 125€.
And it's not really an isolated case of cheap ram...

Appoxo ,

I ran about 10 orb12 docker containers on my raspverry pi with 4gb of ram + Debian (and OMV5).
Red lined the thing plenty of times.

Appoxo ,

Wouldnt bother with Gen8. We literally throw them in the e-waste recycle bin.
Either get a Gen9 if tight with cash (also EOL) or Gen10 servers which are currently supported and get current updates.

Appoxo ,

Not the cores but you can get 2x16gb sodimms for something like an Intel (now Asus) NUC. But that won't be cheap lol.
Dunno if there are 2x32gb kits but maybe some higher end mini-pc has 4 bank ram or even full length dimms.

Appoxo ,

You sound like clients we have. They arent well liked at our company.

Appoxo ,

Our company as in within my coworkers.
Also not everyone lives in the US.

Appoxo ,

Who hurt you mate?

Would you teach your kids how to pirate?

My gf and I have had discussions about teaching morals to kids. In that vein, I asked myself, would I teach piracy to my kids? Yes, it’s technically illegal and carries inherent risks. But so does teenage sex carry the risks of teenage pregnancy, and so we have an obligation to children to teach them how to practice safe sex....

Appoxo ,

I would not teach them safe piracy but rather safe computer literacy and usage.
Exactly like you said: How to spot fake ads or scams etc..
But if my child would like a book from XYZ and they would pirate it I would question the motive instead of getting it from, for example, a library.
Doing illegal shit out of convenience (like pirating a book instead of showering, getting out and enter a library searching for it) is still illegal. Even if you juat read what you want and put the book back in the shelf.

I would also firewall the shit of the little buggers computer. Also no account with admin/sudo rights.

Appoxo ,

And what if they get a love letter because they were too stupid to practice safety?

Appoxo OP ,

Seems like Deck is dependant on a Nextcloud instance?
If yes it would be something I am currently not interested in as it entails too much at the moment. Will keep in mind for the future though.

Appoxo OP ,

Markdown on the go is a bit annoying.

If you are not aware, there is a community plugin called remotely which can sync to OneDrive, S3 (compatible), Dropbox and WebDav.
Might be worth a look to circumvent syncthing.
Personally use syncthing for photosyncing and data backup from phone to NAS

Appoxo OP ,

True. The customization would fit the requirement for the adaptability.
But for a bit of quick and dirty documentation of a task it would quickly get annoying and I would avoid it.

And I would probably start to use Obsidian with some community plugin or some of the already suggested tools.
What I like about kanban that it has a sort of ticket mentality in a 2D-space and can be in a pre-defined state (at least that's what I could gather from pictures).
This restricts me more and prevents me from micromanaging every detail.

Appoxo OP ,

Added. Thank you :)

Appoxo ,

I am not desinterested to learn.
It just doesnt make sense to always have a need to enter the CLI for stuff regular users want to do.
Let the power toys be under the hood, no problem with that. But the regular folks don't even grasp the idea to find out how to change the IP of their regular windows PC for something they want.

Linux is currently developed by tech enthusiasts for mostly tech enthusiasts. Who tells the (by the way awesome) maintainers to stop and think what they develop in that particular way?
Even a group of maintainers might fall into the trap to develop something in such a way that it overwhelms the regular user.

IMO what it needs is resiliency against those users and more aim to make it idiot proof (for them) and make it more an actual daily driver that first has a GUI for the most common tools and then the CLI if needed

looking at windows it's frustrating complication after complication.

Tell that a Windows admin and that admin might say the same about you and your OS.
In the end, everyones wants it their way.
