Was iTunes popular outside of the US? Everyone I know hated they intrusive software and DRM that prevented you from playing the songs elsewhere. Don't think I know a single person who actually purchased music there.

@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I don't see a need for that in your field.

Posting scripts that work for your personal setup is actually something I would consider a security risk as it's giving details about your concrete infrastructure and configurations away.

    Sounds like mail.yandex.com should work for you. It's the Russian copycat of gmail, basically. But they allow anonymous signup with a "don't have" option for phone numbers, and they have next to no trackers on the website. That ones they have are easily blocked.

    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    All of those are for the yandex browser, which is a dedicated app.

    If you want to filter youtube links, you need to add youtube.com and youtu.be you the keyword filter. But then every post containing a link will be hidden.

    I have a 4k TV and don't get it either. Watched the odd video in 4k and the colors are maybe a bit crisper, but that's about it. I'd have to compare movies side by side to actually spot the difference.

    Not worth it IMHO.

    Can't tell for screens though, I don't even know whether mine does 4k or not. Was part of the home-office package from my company. I'll have to check that tomorrow, only returning from a business trip tonight.

    Mine is 65" and I really can't, unless I switch between files rapidly. 720p to 1080p, definitely. But larger, hardly.

    I'd say about 2.5 meters, maybe 3.

    I just did during my annual checkup 2 weeks ago shortly after turning 40, still got 20/20 vision. No idea then...

    Maybe my TV is due for an upgrade then. Or the source movies I tried were 4k in name only but just some upscaled older ones... I'll do some more testing with more recent ones.

    I see, thanks a lot! I don't have any devices that read physical discs, so it's been streaming and alternatively sourced content exclusively. I don't actually mind paying for media, but living in China significantly limits my access to unaltered, genuine discs that come with English audio tracks, unfortunately.

    I'll see if I can get my hands on a full sized LOTR copy for testing purposes then. Thanks a lot for the lengthy response, much appreciated!

    Yes, I trust the encryption layer and the Mozilla Foundation has good ethical principles. I'm also a big fan of Firefox Relay (email alias provider) to protect my inbox from spam.

    I found this old girl on the side of the road, her name is Sunny! ( lemmy.world )

    I took her to the vet and found the owner. I also yelled at them for letting their old dog roam. She's a sweet old gal, and she shouldn't be out there. I'll be checking up on her. Thankfully, they're going to still let me see her, even though I chewed them out....

    I live in a gated community where everybody is a dog owner, they all roam free most of the time. It's pretty awesome. We also have a whatsapp group with all neighbours, so when we want to know where they are, all it takes is a quick message into the group and the current food dispenser of choice will let us know.

    The best thing about that is that we can also just travel for a week or two without bothering. Our dog prefers to sleep in our house, so the next door neighbor will open the door at night & then let her do her thing the next morning.

    I'm using USB-C to 3.5" adapters, they cost next to nothing and allow me to use a much wider pool of phones. Some even come with a USB-C passthrough so you can charge it or connect other stuff simultaneously.

    I read the auto-summary, which didn't mention it. Guess the bot isn't perfect.

    I try not to visit websites that have 100+ trackers installed. Naturally I block them, but I don't even want to give them the traffic.

    Where can I find obscure cnn video?

    The video is an old one about Katrina. I need it for homework. I have tried accessing it from CNN's website but CNN in their infinite wisdom put DRM on the video that is publicly available, and I assume that is why it doesn't work on mull, librewolf, or chromium (all show same error about neon request failed). I looked on the...

    They didn't bring it to light, it was a user report posted on reddit. They merely investigated it further. Nothing against mullvad, it's a great vpn, but credit where credit is due.

    My server is called Mars, and the two clients I have are Phobos and Deimos (the moons of Mars). I though that's a good fit.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    It technically exists, but is very much dead, I'm afraid.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    It actually does with the default setting, but it doesn't show individual progress bars, making it harder to notice. You basically have the "updating repositories..." bar on the very top, and then one after another the apps get the green "update" button. At this point however the updates have already been downloaded, and the button starts the installation of the update locally.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Very strange. We're talking about the official F-Droid, 1.19.1?

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Forget about Virus Total, most sophisticated viruses are no longer hidden in the main .exe but in some random .dll in some subfolder that's being called at some point throughout the game. You'd have to upload every single file to be sure, and that really isn't feasible in modern games.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    The fix is called silent mode. You can define emergency contacts that would ring anyway.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Yep, same. For those apps that don't have a built in vibration control and doesn't respect the system variable, I use App Ops to manually set them.

    viking ,

    You can put in a timeout command at the end, and then call the next .bat file.

    For example "TIMEOUT /T 60" waits for 60 seconds before resuming, or you can override it by pressing any key.

    So if you know how long the wait time between scripts is, just write a master.bat and call them in order, with adequate waiting time in between.

    LOL, some of the comments in the source are gold.

    https://github.com/microsoft/MS-DOS/blob/main/v4.0/src/DOS/ABORT.ASM

    Note: We do need to explicitly close FCBs. Reasons are as follows: If we
    ; are running in the no-sharing no-network environment, we are simulating the
    ; 2.0 world and thus if the user doesn't close the file, that is his problem
    ; BUT... the cache remains in a state with garbage that may be reused by the
    ; next process. We scan the set and blast the ref counts of the FCBs we own.
    ;
    ; If sharing is loaded, then the following call to close process will
    ; correctly close all FCBs. We will then need to walk the list AFTER here.
    ;
    ; Finally, the following call to NET_Abort will cause an EOP to be sent to all
    ; known network resources. These resources are then responsible for cleaning
    ; up after this process.
    ;
    ; Sleazy, eh?~

    Safest way of using WeChat on Android?

    I live in Canada. My girlfriend is Chinese (also living in Canada), and while we are able to communicate via SMS, her mobile carrier isn't the best, and so there have often been issues for us with regular texting. She expressed a strong preference to use WeChat, at least as a backup option for when texting fails us. While I...

    I'm in China and have to use that piece of crap. So here's how I locked it down:

    1. Root your phone with Magisk. There's no way around it.
    2. Install Storage Isolation (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=moe.shizuku.redirectstorage) and deny access to all folders.
    3. Install ApOps (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rikka.appops) and set pretty much everything to deny or ignore (ignore means the app receives the information "permission granted", but no data is provided, in case some permissions are "mandatory"). If you intend to use wechat to exchange voice messages or make video calls/send photos, the "use microphone" and "use camera" functions would be required. In a similar fashion the location access if you intend to use the location sharing feature.
    4. Be acutely aware that wechat is not encrypting messages, neither end to end nor in the server communicaton. Everything you say can (and probably will) be read and archived. Don't say anything confidential or critical there.

    And yeah really, try to convince your wife girlfriend to use signal instead. Or hell, even whatsapp is miles ahead.

    My wife is Chinese as well, so even after we leave here she'll be using wechat to stay in touch with family, no way around it, but using messengers more commonplace in other countries is definitely better. Personally I will move wechat to another phone once we're out. For now that's not feasible as it's too much integrated into every function of life here.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Whatsapp uses end to end encryption and is far from as intrusive as wechat.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    I guess it could be, but that kills the use case of being contactable by his GF on the fly.

    Please go back to your tankie-sphere and leave me alone.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Yeah I've played around with it in the past, but having to re-establish the wireless adb was quite annoying. Plus I need root for AdAway already, I don't think that can be achieved via Shizuku, but that might not apply to the OP. I've tried island back in the beta stage and it wouldn't work on my phone, but I guess things have change since. Might give it another try.

    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Many US based websites are no longer displaying content to Europeans, since they can't legally harvest data. Youtube, Instagram and other websites/apps playing licensed content are also increasingly disregarding countries where licenses are expensive and/or revenue is low.

    I'd really look into getting a good VPN. Mullvad ($5/month) is awesome, or else Proton in the free tier (can't pick the server but get one assigned at random, might need to restart to get one in a useful location).

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Ah yeah, I'm in China so I need the stealth option, which doesn't work with OpenVPN.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Is amp still around? Those cancerous links drove me back to Firefox after years of using Chrome, they hardly ever worked.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    I'm still using google search, just deactivated amp. Initially with a Firefox add-on, now I think that's a native feature.

    But Google search results are increasingly bad, what alternative do you recommend? I've dabbled with bing and yandex (which is honestly quite good, but... Russian) and would like to have a real alternative.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    I keep coming across kagi but haven't used it yet. Think I'll give it a try finally.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Yep I've just signed up for the free trial and will use it in parallel to google to get a feeling for the difference. Since I'm using google with anti-tracking and adblock, I don't really get annoyed by the site itself, more like the crappy top-ranking SEO pages. Back in the days, the front page was all I ever needed, now I feel like the good results start on page 2.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Oh nice, that's a good tip. Thanks!

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    As long as you host the checksums elsewhere so that users can verify the repo hasn't been tampered with, you can host files in China or Russia just fine.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    What else would I care for? We're talking about piracy, so I wouldn't turn the choice of a server location into a human rights debate.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    Well they might, even if I you were Russian. But that's what off-site backups are there for. It's less likely for them to pull control than it is for a Western platform though, so still a win vs. Github.

    viking ,
    @viking@infosec.pub avatar

    A server is an emotionless piece of hardware, regardless of where it stands. Geo-arbitration is just that, in my eyes.
