OnePlus 12 WiFi Mystery! Why is my phone connecting to an #OPTIMUM Network? ( youtube.com )

ONEPLUS 12 CONTROVERSY! It's a little concerning. My phone keeps trying to connect to a mystery network, listed as an ISP WiFi that (to my knowledge) doesn't do business here in California. Has anyone else seen something like this? What's going on?

somegadgetguy ,

Came here just to say something similar.

"Going FOSS really whips the llamas ass!"

somegadgetguy ,

Kinda the perfect place to start pushing app bundles more, but yeah, I'll be really patient waiting for this one to roll out to my chromecast...

somegadgetguy ,

Ha! That was my favorite part of shooting the editorial. Thanks for sharing 😁

somegadgetguy ,

Yup. Kind of a gish gallop of buzzwords to keep investors happy...

somegadgetguy ,

Balancing performance against power draw is tough. You'll find diminishing returns on adding more cores when a bigger core might complete a task faster and use less power overall.
Tensor 3 is also a nona-core, but in general, i think we'll probably see companies stick with symmetrical big/little core counts.

TicWatch Pro 5 Enduro: A Small Refresh to a Nice Wear OS Watch ( www.youtube.com )

The newest Wear OS watch from Mobvoi is not a radical hardware change. Where Xiaomi, Oppo, and Google are only just catching the tech in the Pro 5, the Enduro is a move towards slightly better efficiency and fancier build materials. It's still a TicWatch though, and while some of the software situation has improved, we still...

somegadgetguy OP ,

I REALLY wish these companies would drop the extra sensors. It's just for the look, to make it LOOK more expensive.
It's better than when cheap brands would put fake lenses on the back of a phone, but not by much.

somegadgetguy ,

I try to tell people to "upgrade in place" and save money, unless they WANT to try new things on their phones.
If you WANT to try playing more graphics intense games or edit video/podcasts from a phone (and you werent don't that already on your current phone) it makes sense to shop a more powerful replacement.
Otherwise, let's say you have a three to four years old premium phone, and you want to keep doing the same things with it, then replacing it with a mid-ranger should still be a slight performance upgrade, move you down a price tier.

somegadgetguy ,

We keep seeing these "record breaking" articles about Samsung selling more phones than some previous high watermark, but increasingly, Samsung can't seem to sustain interest in their products past the first surge of pre-orders.

The S8 and S8+ went on to sell 41 million units according to analysts. That doesn't include a Note.

I'll lay the prediction out that Samsung will sell fewer Galaxy S phones with three models this year than they did with two models back in 2017.

Looking for a REALLY simple video editor for win10, nothing fancy please! [E: already solved. Amazing, thanks!] ( kbin.social )

Windows Movie Maker used to be good enough, but for a while now it won't load mp4's anymore and I can't be bothered to try and fix it, and I'm really hating the online editors I've tried, so it's time to download some software!...

somegadgetguy ,

Always worth mentioning the free version of davinci resolve. It's feature complete for your described needs, doesn't hassle with things like watermarks, and the tools are great if you ever need to step up to something a little more robust.

somegadgetguy ,

Google is using an order of magnitude more electricity to basically copy Siri. Neat.

somegadgetguy ,

We saw a glimpse of some great mobile awareness in Cortana. Contacts and location reminders were amazing on windows phones.

"Next time I talk to my wife, remind me to ask bout the dogs medication."
Phone call, text, or email, I'd get a reminder.

"Next time I'm at the store, remind me to buy bread."
"Which store?"
"Any grocery store."

Phone assistants have basically been going down hill since windows 10.

somegadgetguy ,

And for how expensive portable consoles can be, I'm not calling anything a "steam deck killer" until I'm also confident it can be repaired and upgraded for years after I buy it.

Does the OnePlus 12 have a Stacked Camera Sensor? Is the Open Camera Better? CONTROVERSY! ( www.youtube.com )

What's going on with the OnePlus 12 camera? I've gotten a number of questions from folks concerned about the new camera sensor in the OnePlus 12, and how it might be different from the OnePlus Open. Is OnePlus trying to pull a fast one? Should folks expect poorer camera performance on the less expensive phone? Why did Sony give...

somegadgetguy ,

Can't blame them. Google cut mobvoi and fossil off at the knees, while courting Samsung. Why would they stay?
I hope they try another hybrid watch.

somegadgetguy ,

I really want to try the withings. The new fossil hybrid is more like a Pebble. It's a solid little notification machine.

somegadgetguy ,

Seems to me that Android as a platform was healthier when there was broader competition, and a wider range of designs and features.
Samsung peaked with the S10, and sales have plummeted the more they copy Apple.

somegadgetguy ,

I have my daughter’s first steps in 4K. That was roughly seven years ago. Shot from an old LG. That little clip is amazing, and it looks so much better than what 1080p at the time would have looked like.

somegadgetguy ,

4K120 is the most useful “extreme” video mode, and it’s a shame more companies haven’t supported it, just ZTE, OnePlus, and Sony. It’s crazy flexible. Can be easily dropped to 60 or 30 fps, and makes for absolutely stunning slow motion. It’s such an easy edit in something like LumaFusion to time stretch it. Even silly little family videos look so much cooler at that resolution in one quarter time. When done right, at a good bitrate, it looks much better than most phones’ potato quality 1080p slow motion. Sony absolutely chose right offering 4k120 over 8k24.

somegadgetguy ,

Oh that's true. I typically try to shoot one "tier" above what the expected output should be when using consumer cameras and codecs. I wrote a piece a LONG time ago about that on Pocketnow, shooting 4K for 1080p playback. Beyond editing, even just simple playback is improved going one level up. 4:2:0 4K video (played at full res) looks better on a 1080p TV than 1080p video looks. The same is also true for 8K, but the direct gains are smaller just playing back a clip.
But your point is spot on. If you're finishing a video in 4k or 1080p, and you're going to incorporate footage from a phone, then 8k is REALLY handy to work on.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE: Snapdragon vs. Exynos compared ( www.gsmarena.com )

As expected the Snapdragon has better battery life. It lasts 13.2% longer than the Exynos in their battery test (9:45h vs 8:28h) with the biggest differences being in calls over an LTE network (34:15h vs 28:26h) and video playback scores (11:27h vs 9:16h). The Snapdragon version is superior in their web browsing and gaming...

somegadgetguy ,

Dang. Those are two rough chips to recommend at the end of 2023. The 8Gen1 isn’t as bad as the 810 that would melt solder, but it’s not gonna age as gracefully as the 865 or the 8Gen2. Sad that Samsung’s own design is still poorer than the 8Gen1.

somegadgetguy ,

More video out support and desktop modes. Mid-ranger phones are more powerful than budget Chromebooks. It’s silly to act like these pocket computers couldn’t replace a LOT of folks home PCs or laptops.

somegadgetguy ,

My editor used to be SO into the Porsche designed Huawei phones. They brought a different look, but outside the Porsche label, I couldn’t say what made them any more stylish or desirable.

somegadgetguy ,

Wow yeah. I LOVED hiking around looking for caches.

somegadgetguy ,

It’s higher level, but video editing on mobile got ugly with this. I’m totally fine to pay for new plugins, but there’s no processing done off my phone. There’s no reason to subscription lock features like 4k rendering and plugins. Especially when free editors are pretty good (after dealing with ads) or Lumafusion is great with a one time purchase.

somegadgetguy ,

The situation has been getting MUCH better. The thing a lot of these articles overlook is just the strange structural difference between Android and iOS. We still seem to be primed to look for the big OTA, that’s “THE Update”, but increasingly more of the bug fixes, security patching, and feature refinement are being delivered by individual app updates and Google Play system updates. I’m OK if the OTAs are a bit more sporadic if I see work from the manufacturer and from Google to push better code throughout the year. I’d rather not wait for a big OTA, when a small component needs to be updated. The situation for Android updates has gotten a LOT better.

somegadgetguy ,

We care so much about our users’ privacy and security, we make sure their messages fall back to SMS when chatting with non-iphones. We COULD have dictated the future of messaging in North America, and demanded standards that would have benefited us, but we know we make more money by letting out customers bully the green bubbles.

somegadgetguy ,

I worry mediatek might have made the jump one gen too early.

somegadgetguy ,

I get that some people are annoyed when different phones have settings in slightly different menus, but we should just be teaching people to rely on search in settings rather than memorizing where each phone puts individual settings.

somegadgetguy ,

It’s a double edged sword. DO we want Android to be more like Windows? That’s the only way you won’t have OEMs making their own unique hierarchy of menus in settings. It’s all a part of a “familiarity” strategy. Get someone used to the way one phone is organized, then they will complain that another phone isn’t “intuitive”. Either we teach people to lean on search, or we ask for Google to take over more of the “unification” of Android.

somegadgetguy ,

This dimensity looks really interesting. Benchmark scores should be high, but I’m concerned about sustained performance.

somegadgetguy ,

I stopped paying for extra drive space, so this is a feature that would eat up a ton of space. I probably won’t be using it much…

somegadgetguy ,

I’m back to a full computer again too, and if you don’t have a laptop handy, the new little mini PCs are surprisingly affordable too. If you don’t want to build a raspberry pi.

somegadgetguy ,

A lot of techies don’t seem to understand just how much Sony is pushing the camera functionality on XPERIA. It has a headphone jack to monitor audio while recording or to add a mic, just like a Sony Alpha camera. That it can be used for entertainment is the distant third place benefit for including it.

somegadgetguy ,

None of the adapters are worth using with a pixel. It’s been the most consistent gripe I have with the Pixel line.

somegadgetguy ,

Your glasses are an external monitor and can accept input from an HDMI port with the right cables. There are some adapters that will get an image out of a Pixel to a portable or face monitor, but they’re garbage.
